PATS-REBELS SWING BLOCKBUSTER DEAL

Mahura
Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats have acquired 18-year-old defenceman Josh Mahura, 18-year-old forward Jeff de Wit and a conditional third round pick in 2019 from Red Deer.

In exchange, the Pats send 18-year-old forward Lane Zablocki, 16-year-old defenceman Dawson Barteaux, a first round pick in 2017 and a first rounder in either 2018 or 2019 to Red Deer. The Pats send a conditional third in 2020 to the Rebels as well.

Mahura, a third round pick of the Anaheim Ducks in 2016, has nine goals and 24 assists in 39 games this season. de Wit has four goals and nine assists in 36 games. Both were members of the Rebels Memorial Cup team in 2016.

"Mahura and de Wit bring a considerable amount of skill and depth to our team," said Pats Head Coach and GM John Paddock. "We are excited to add to our club for the remainder of this season and for next year as well."

Zablocki was acquired by the Pats from the Prince George Cougars in 2015. He had 27 goals and 35 assists in 105 games in Regina. Barteaux, a first round pick of the Pats in 2015, suited up for 18 games this year and recorded two assists.

"Lane and Dawson have been a credit to our organization," said Paddock. "We wish them both all the best in Red Deer."

The Pats return to action on Friday at home to the Tri-City Americans. Puck drop at the Brandt Centre is at 7 p.m.Tickets are available at reginapats.com or at the Brandt Centre Box Office.

Seems like a nice deal but I will reserve final opinion until Mr. Weppler weights in with his usual thoughtful analysis.

Always hard to lose players when the season has been a good one. The cruel but very real part of sports.

Well guess we are set now.

With no goaltender trade I am assuming that means Hollett is on the mend as he is certainly is one of the better backups in the league.

I am sure there will be many comments on here so stay tuned...should be fun to hear what us "couch" GM's have to say :))

I really liked Zablocki since he came over...had some touch and grit. Don't know much about the newbies but assume JP knows what he's doing. The 1st rounders may hurt down the line but at least the 2 we got are 18 so good for 1 if not 2 years so if we get the Memorial Cup they will be here.

A lot of new faces so going to take some for them all to fit in and get the lines set for the stretch run. Should be fun!

Zablocki didn't stand out to me this year like he did in the playoffs last year but that probably goes with playing on a team with all these point producers. Still tough loss I liked him. This is allot of change it may take a bit to get that chemistry going but our back end looks allot better. Tough to.lose those draft choices as well but at least they will be late picks. 2 years in a row. Yikes. Go pats go!

Those first round picks are going to really hurt.

HAD to give 1st round picks in this deal. They will be in the 20's so will be about as good as second rounders but many 1st and 2nd rounders don't turn out anyway unless they are top 10. I knew we needed some grit up front so added an 18 yr old who is experienced to play with Jake and Slobo. But when I got my hands on Mahura that was a no brainer for the 1st round picks. We have a guaranteed stud who already is amazing and will be for our cup runs this year and next. Our cupboards are stocked, the 1st round picks won't hurt us as I got a 3rd back and have stocked the cupboards with picks so that I could pull something like this off. We don't need a goalie, we may have the best tandom in the league. That being said,,, if someone calls offering an Ingram I will listen.

Am I the only one here feeling like the Pats gave away way too much in this deal? 2 firsts, a 3rd, a former 1st round pick and Zablocki, that's a steep price to pay!!

Nice deal Mr Sutter. Big win for us Future is looking great. Unbelievable trade. Whohooo!

Anonymous said...

With this trade the Pats are 'all in' for a Memorial Cup run. This does mortgage the future, however if the Pats can win it all the trade will be well worth it.

Dang it

This was an indefensible trade. Sutter absolutely abused Paddock on this one. 2 first round picks, a first round prospect, and a higher end forward for an elite d-man and under-performing 18 year old forward…wow.

If Paddock keeps trading with Sutter within two-three years this franchise will be in ruins. We will not have a pick in the first round for three years in a row. That will come back to bite them in the rear end. Some may argue the picks will be 20-22 but now their first picks will be at likely 44 and second at 66. What will they get there? Pay a fair price but don't get bent over a barrel. Combine that with the scalping by Medicine Hat last year with Sanford, the cupboards will soon be bare!

Nothing less than everything is now expected.

Not going to happen. Better teams in the West and way better teams in the OHL. London Knights for one.

Lol. Thanks for the chuckle couch potato

It was payback time for Pats stealing Leschyshyn for Connor Gay to Red Deer

Anonymous said...

When are the Roughriders going to announce their own blockbuster trade with Durant front and center?

Anonymous said...

After next year we will be sellers and recoup our 1st round picks and prospects. Lechisyn Henry hollett will be unloaded and 2 yrs later were back on top.

Ya Saskatoon, give yourself a hand for 2,606 fans for a home game Tues vs Calgary. Guess they only give a c r a @ about LaCrosse now. Move that team already to Nanaimo because Saskatoon is NOT a hockey town anymore.

Looks like Mr. Sutter has taken over from Mr. McCrimmon.....quite the fleecing!

Bantam draft picks are such a crap shoot.
Very, very few turn into WHL stars.

The Pats will not be sellers in two years! They will be a national contender for this season and the next two. It is why they can afford to sacrifice a couple first round picks and have a small gap in an age group.

Adding Mahura made Barteaux expendable as he would be an extra d-man next year too. A lot of crazy things happen when teams get awarded Memorial Cup. I wouldn't be shocked if a guy like Zoborvskiy got returned as a 20 for coaching and opportunity.

Say all you want about building around Steel, this team has had a lot of the right things come together. Nobody saw Brooks improving as much as he did plus being back as a 20. Filip Ahl was completely off the radar. Nick Henry deciding against NCAA.

Now is the time to do whatever it takes!

Write this down and read it after 3 round of playoffs...Pats lose as Goaltending can't win them a crucial game..... Brown is a good tender but he will not consistantly win you games....

Anonymous said...

I think the trade is win win for both. Regina is in win now and next year mode. Red Deer is a couple years away.I would also suggest that Paddock is the new McCrimmon as he has made some very smart moves and has helped turn this franchise around, Junior hockey is cyclical, Brandon was Dub champs last year and yesterday trade Papirney which tells me they have resigned to the fact that they are out this year.
First round picks can be a crap shoot (Remember Lefflar??)and you have to pay a price for solid 98 born players. I think I am going to embrace this team and enjoy the excellent brand of hockey they provide rather than pretend I know something and say Pats got fleeced et al.
Finally, I would really like to know more info on Hollett? Is he practicing? Is close to returning? The silence around him is killing me!!

People are so dumb. BOTH teams won this trade. The Pats give away future to get better now and RD trades us a stud to bolster the blueline and a tough kid with experience who will play two more years after this if needed. This is how trades work you dummies. Both are winners. Zablocki may not ever get 30 goals, the two firsts may end up being ave and the 3rd we got back could turn into a star. Then we CRUSH this deal. But both teams win , we win now, they win later. SEE: Montreal/Nash trade. Giving Barteaux for a stud d man which is what we need right now was genius. Anyone who thinks the Pats lost that deal know ZIP about hockey. They prove it with their dumb comments~

Lol wow.

Lol I agree with couch potato.
Don't comment if you don't know what your talking about.

What about the Connor gay trade? Why didn't you mention that. Right red deer didn't even keep him.

U don't get a developed 18 year old offensive defenceman for a late first. Use your head.

Anonymous said...

Sellers in 2 years. Great trade for this and next year.

Anonymous said...

Pats had no 1st round pick in 2016, no 1st in 2017 and no 1st possibly in 2018? that is a whole new level of mortgaging the future.

Bruke Plumbing said...

This may seem like a high price to pay. But 60 pt defensemen aren't just sitting around. This also gives you a pretty solid base for next year as well. Jost will get a contract from Colorado next year which gives us a shot at him next year too.

I don't know why anybody even writes comments in on this, all of us are losers and know nothing about the game. Pon Jaddock is the only one that knows anything about hockey (on his PS4 anyway)!
On a serious note good job by the real Paddock, who knows something about hockey, great trades! Bring on the playoffs.
