LULAY TO THE ROUGHRIDERS?

Lulay at 2016 Grey Cup in Toronto
The CFL rumour mill got a good spin on Tuesday when Vancouver football writer Mike Beamish reported veteran Lions quarterback Travis Lulay is the centre of trade rumours involving the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The gossip certainly caught me off-guard, but Beamish said the Riders are apparently kicking tires all over the league as they try to find a replacement for Darian Durant (including in their own backyard).

Not surprisingly, Beamish didn't say where the rumour came from and went so far as to say it's not even credible.

Lions Head Coach & GM Wally Buono was quoted in the piece but didn't deny the talk altogether.

Meanwhile Darian Durant hasn't even been an Alouette for a week and he's already embroiled in a quarterback controversy.  Hall of Fame writer Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette reports incumbent Als quarterback Vernon Adams wasn't enamoured with Friday's acquisition of Durant and he won't give up the starter's job without a fight.

Futhermore Sportsnet's Arash Madani said on Tuesday's SportsCage on 620 CKRM that everyone should pump the brakes at the notion of Durant being the saviour in Montreal.

"That trade is not putting Montreal over the top," Madani advised. "Let's get that out of the way.

"Their roster isn't anywhere near getting over the top.  Who's Durant going to throw the ball to?  Who's going to block for him?  Right?  Sure they're excited and of course they're gonna say they're excited.  They gave up two draft picks but Darian needs some help around him to be successful.  Now it's up to Kavis Reed to make it happen."

CFL insiders insist that the Roughriders haven't given up the chase of Eskimos back-up quarterback James Franklin in time for the 2017 season and I asked Madani if he can envision any scenario in which that plays out.

"I just don't know," Madani said.  "(Edmonton GM) Ed Hervey's going to want a king's ransom and maybe Jones gives it up.  At this stage, are the Riders built to win in 2017?  Probably not.  So if that's the case then you have time to find, develop and build somebody.  The scuttlebutt is Saskatchewan's now one of the frontrunners for Kevin Glenn.  We'll see if that happens and he's a capable player and definite insurance."

Arash feels the Riders are more likely to develop from within when it comes to finding Darian Durant's replacement.

"Ultimately now Saskatchewan has to be in the mode of finding the next franchise guy who's going to be around for 11 years," Madani concluded.

We'll have more on Wednesday's SportsCage at 4:00 pm on 620 CKRM.

It's Lulay or Ray along with Franklin. Couldn't care less about blowhard Mandani's opinion. Durant is done, left, no longer a Roughrider, we move on.

Lulay and former Lion QB backup DeMarco we trust

Madani is a real piece of work that bashes or takes a shot at the CFL any time he can yet the "voice of the Riders" gives said piece of work a voice on his blog. Interesting.

Duron Carter to the Roughriders imminent.

Agreed.

Lulay ain't no spring chicken but he could hold the fort until the NEXT ONE is discovered.

Can't afford Durant, Lulay probably more than Durant, Kevin Glenn here we come.

Anonymous said...

Lulay would be a good addition. He knows the game and is a proven winner. He can't be happy in a backup roll in BC. Add Glenn to backup Lulay. Keep best of last years rookies plus next best on practice roster for future and development.

Armchair GM

Just saying..... said...

Lulay would be my choice although he says he's happy backing up in BC. then again maybe he's never been offered a chance to start elsewhere? Ya i think he's all the sudden gonna get the itch to play.

Just rumors, that said Lulay = terrible idea. Over the hill QB with one of the worst injury histories in the CFL. Had basically two good seasons his entire career. If we let DD go to bring in someone like Lulay, I'd say Jones personnel strategies have some serious issues.

Anonymous said...

So let me get this straight, Jones' plan is "apparently kicking tires all over the league as they try to find a replacement for Darian Durant"?? What a joke!! And please God, don't let him be stupid enough to trade for the injury prone, over-rated Lulay or to sign Glenn! It appears that those thinking that Jones wouldn't be dumb enough to trade Durant without a trick up his sleave were wrong.

The Riders are a serious dumpster fire right now and Jones IS NOT the man to bring us back to winning ways. Make no mistake, the Riders are in serious trouble both on and off the field. No sign of hope on the field and they've frittered away millions under Reynolds with a loss of $4.2M in 2015 and the loss from 2016 operations yet to be announced. The mantra that the Riders sell more souvenirs than all other CFL teams combined is a stat from the 2013 grey-cup winning season and is highly unlikely to hold true now. I was in a Rider store twice before Christmas, once to buy something and once to return it, and I could've thrown a Kevin Glenn duck in there without hitting a soul. I was the only person in there both times...a week before Christmas!

Jones said that one of the factors in the decision to trade Durant was that it was a business decision. Well, in business, you don't alienate 80-90% of your market segment and hope to be successful. That "business decision"is going to result in poor performance on the field and even greater operations losses for 2017. When long-time supporters and season ticket holders are disgusted with your poor performance, you don't slap them in the face and say "oh well, we have a waiting list". There is no compelling reason to not be on the list, especially since many won't get an opportunity to purchase until Jones and Reynolds are long gone. In this economy, it's unlikely that all of those people are in a position to be able to purchase, even if they were still willing.

And the madness begins...Lulay isnt going anywhere. This could be Buono's last season, he know the value of having two QB's. Lulay is happy where he is and is groomong for a coaching gig with the Lions. He's the leader of the locker room, he lives just across the border in Washington State and has atoung family. His situation in BC for him and the club. Sorry Rider fans...nor happening.

Anonymous said...

80 to 90% of the fan base is NOT alienated, 80 to 90% of the nut cases, well that's another story.

Anonymous said...

Guy writes an article based on a rumour that even he says in the article isn't credible, which spawns a blog post about the article that was written based on a non-credible rumour that results in comments bashing a GM.

This is the definition of #fakenews yet Rider fans are drooling all over themselves.

Fact is this, by Durant leaving and bringing in Kevin Glenn or equivalent for 150,000 less allows the Riders to sign one or two other big name guys and improve on Canadian depth and offensive line.

Passion does not mean knowledge.

Anonymous said...

And you would know.....right!

Anonymous said...

It's not that we couldn't afford him

Anonymous said...

Lulay comes to camp, and begins the season as QB1. Inevitably gets injured in game 4. Brandon Bridge steps in and starts every game for the next 10 years.

Anonymous said...

Signing one or 2 big names was a bust last year, why would it be any different this year? (Price, Cappiciotti, Lemon, Chambers, Lawrence). Assuming the Riders can even attract any free agents to the gong show.

You gotta relax. We are building a team from the ground up that will be able to compete year in and year out - patience young padwan.

If I have to watch Kevin Glenn be recycled here one more time, Ill certainly lose alot of what is left of my passion for this current version of the Riders.

Knowledge doesnt keep people interested, buy merchandise, show up on gameday or actually engage in the game when they are there - passion does.

To Anonymous about kicking tires all over the league- I could not agree with you more. I believe you are absolutely correct. Lulay is only one year younger than Durant and I don't think that he has started a game since the tenth week of 2015. Mat Dunigan has stated on TSN that he would be surprised if Lulay would be able to throw many balls with all the injuries he has had to his throwing shoulder. Last season he threw 32 passes in very limited use.
I also was in the Riders Store a few weeks before Christmas, an empty Rider store with no jerseys from present day players; only retro jerseys.
Jones keeps emphasizing that he will be fiscally responsible. Does that mean that he is going to sacrifice some players to help pay for the penalties that he got from the CFL office? Or get rid of proven performers so that he can have his never ending camps in the states. The Riders are bleeding money and showing little or no improvement.
And for the anonymous commenter that called everyone not enamoured with Jones a nut case, if that is your only defence for Chris Jones, to call someone names, that speaks volumes.

Gord said...

So just to clarify, Jones was saying that he didnt want to caough money to sign Durant because of his injury issues, but hes willing to sign Lulay who is constantly injured or Glenn who is basically a journey man stop gap who has played for every team twice. Awesome! Good plan Jonesy. What a mess

Anonymous said...

Most of the nut cases are the fans that believe in Jones! His free agent signings last year were mostly a bust. There are players that don't want to play for Jones because a player makes a mistake and he is gone.

CM said...

Jones decisions as a GM have not been good. He is a proven coach, but being a GM is a different skill. Dumb move to blow out DD over a few bucks when there is not a ready replacement. Unless Ricky Ray comes and that would be ok.

Anonymous said...

Hey !!! What a bout MVP of GREY CUP.. Henry Burris.? He has not made any retirement announcements and would be a Great Starter for a new team that is just Starting Out. (RIDERS THAT IS ). better than all the other Hillbillies named on here so far.

All Jones' has shown is that he's got a bigger pissin' pot than anyone else.
No plan A
No plan B
No plan C
No clue in Riderville.

Ok

Lets just do a Rider QB rumour of the day (insert name of any other CFL QB other than DD) to the Riders for (insert any rider picks, roster players, neg list).

Roddy can call it "Rider Rumour of the day" and get some sponsors lined up.

Keeps everyone happy...

And the #fakenews wins again.

Jones never said he wants to sign Lulay. Read the articles you mouth breathers.

Oh my goodness, I am not sure there is a fully functional brain amongst all the people that are dumping on Jones here. Here is the business plan I hear from the lot of you:

"Keep all my favorite players and pay them whatever they want. Take the remaining nickles, lint, food stamps, etc and build a great team around those guys, sell more merchandise, win Grey Cup...rinse and repeat."

Do you know what that gets you? It's gets you 4 Grey Cups in 105 years. It gets you a franchise that only hosts a west final once in a generation. Its gets you a team that cannot compete at a high level on year in, year out basis. It gets you a team whose biggest claim to fame is that they sell more merchandise than all the other Canadian sports franchises save the Leafs and Canadiens.

The current management is taking the correct course of trying to build a winner rather than buy a winner. They are taking the course blazed by proven football men like Buono and Huff who are famous for cutting guys a year too early rather than a year too late. You guys may not understand it but in the CFL, with the cap as small as it is, every $ you spend has to bring an appropriate level of return on the field. You can't have any dead money. So if you are going to have a 450K QB you need to be getting some ridiculous value at other positions to make that worthwhile. When you are a rebuilding team that has many holes to fill you can't afford to invest a large % of your cap in one or two guys. You can't get decent talent on the offensive line when you have no money left to pay them...Economics 101, folks.

Jones might be a bad GM. I don't know yet and you don't know yet. You want to be mad at someone, be mad at the previous regime who took you to the Grey Cup and then nose dived your franchise six feet under into cap hell. That's is exactly what Jones inherited. Stop blaming him for breaking something that was already broke when he walked in the door. Let the man do his job, hold your vitriol for a couple of years and then evaluate.

Bob said...

Agree with Stephen, you gotta chill the heck out. The team jo es took over was built for the 2013 cup and was not very good when he took it over. He needed to make changes and aside from Chick I hunk he would still say he is good with his decisions. But there have always been those waiting to jump off the bandwagon so all I say is jump now and make room for real fans.

Amen Chris!

Thank you.

In the year 2020 we can all look back and decide whether this Durant trade was a huge blunder or the birth of a champion!

Anonymous said...

To Chris,
Your argument might hold water if Murphy wouldn't have been bragging about having the best cap situation in the league back in November. If it was so great, why hadn't they acquired some capable o-lineman, or other players for that matter. Instead, they traded Fulton, arguably one of the best tackles in the league.

Jones was brought in to build a competitive team for the 2017 new stadium season and continue with sustained success. That is obviously not going to happen so things aren't going according to plan. The new stadium is going to sound like a morgue with a sub-par team and no players fans can associate with.

If I could see even a glimmer of hope, I'd cut Jones a bit of slack but the reality is that we have no CFL calibre QB, we have no running backs, the worst o-line in the the league, a defensive front that can't generate any pressure or stop the run. We have a few capable DBs and LBs and some receivers with potential and that's it. The offensive and defensive schemes were questionable at best and Jones made more coaching errors than most Pop Warner coaches. Jones has graded himself an F so I think it's more than fair to at least agree with him about that.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Chris…just when you think you've seen the most stupid post ever, some Scruffy look-a-like gets on here and utters something even more ridiculous. Certainly no problem selling out the new stadium so their venom really only hurts……well…. themselves! Nobody cares about their opines….

The Riders have had a dismal CFL history of winning. We were recycler all the time and blew the salary cap to win in 2013. The sins of the father have arrived. The football acumen shown here leaves little doubt that these mental midgets are better suited for washing down port-a-potties.

None of the irreplaceable losses from last year played in the last GC to my recollection. None were difference makers. Kent Austin the GURU of everything good hasn't won a GC since he came back. AND the gum drops want to dump on a guy fixing a huge mess he inherited after one season.????? Pathetic and little wonder good football people don't really last here….We are cursed with stupid fans and generationally poor teams.

I see nothing wrong with signing Kevin Glenn as a starter or support. We needed a mentor and Darian simply is not that. He is a lot of things but a mentor isn't one of them. Take that for what you will.

Develop the guys we have or another young guy and see where it goes. Then Franklin or other QB's may be available so someone can take the reigns and run.

Anonymous said...

Well said Chris. I can't believe the negativity being spewed here on a stupid rumor!!!

donna Campbell said...

No to Lulay, Glenn and Ray. I don't think Jones is kicking the tires on other teams QB's other than maybe Edmonton. We just had a Qb than was injured 2 1/2 years out of 3 why would we bring in another old often injured backup QB? We have J Jackson to mentor any young QB. Run with young guys!!

Anonymous said...

Chris is right. People are giving Taman a free pass because of the 2013 Cup but the reality of the situation is he was a terrible GM who had no long term strategy for this team. After we won in 07 Tillman had built the depth and talent to where we could handle turnover and still keep winning. Taman on the other hand bought the aging talent that was able to win that one year but as soon as adversity struck the whole thing fell apart completely. Some people got mad at John Murphy for saying that the Riders have these last few years have not had much success. With only hosting one west final in 40 years he's absolutely correct. Perhaps that's why good management people have stayed away from SK for so many years, they didn't want to put up with the fans' crap whenever they made an unpopular move. And the ones that did got tarred and feathered and leaving on the next thing smokin'.

Thank you for explaining "common sense direct facts" that the majority of Saskatchewan seem to have no concept of as evident by asinine opinions. Professional football is a "business" based on overall demand to positive organization/fanbase results to a mandate of winning while always constant to the ongoing building of championship calbre teams vying long term to a coveted end result Grey Cup title that every team aspires on a year to year basis. Thank you Chris. Hear! Hear!

You guys calling it a gongshow here are absolutely clueless. We had the thunders's oline basically because of injuries. Jones has done an unreal job at bringing in talent. Everyone complains about cutting chick, dressler and smith last season but they have already been replaced by better younger cheaper guys (jefferson, collins, edwards). If they sign Carter they will have the best recievers in the league. How many games did they blow that they should of won. easily could of been 9-9. Everyone just needs to relax. Sick of reading comments where people have absolutely zero idea what they are talking about and are crying cuz their favourite players are gone. suck it up.

Wrong. See comments from Brandon Bridge earlier this week, after the trade had already taken place re: Durant as a mentor. His comments = credible. Yours = not.
