AN ACTUAL DURANT UPDATE

SportsCage/Sportsnet CFL Insider Arash Madani had some welcome news regarding the contract talks between the Riders and Darian Durant on Thursday afternoon.

Madani reported on Twitter that a CFL source says the Roughriders made a new contract offer to Durant this week.  A Rider source seemed to confirm that story, saying the club has now tabled an offer with a base salary of $300,000 with performance incentives topping out at $400,000 in 2017.

Madani further reported that he feels Montreal will be in line for Durant's services come free agency on February 14 so he may wait to see what he can fetch on the open market.

A CFL executive told me today that he feels Durant is a $400,000 quarterback and he may be able to get it in free agency.  Madani's report suggested the Riders don't want to "lock in on a high cap number on a QB with Durant's injury track record".

**UPDATE: A Roughrider source told me Thursday evening that the Madani report is inaccurate regarding term and figures in the new offer.

Stay tuned.

"lock in on a high cap number on a QB with Durant's injury track record".

Please!!

Durant has been nothing but a warrior his entire career. The arm injury in 2014 was from an after the whistle hit that never should have happened & his achilles injury in 2015 was an exception & the rule.

He might not be "the future", but he sure as hell has a few good years left.

Sign the man already!!!

Yawn... Previous admin egeriously spoiled Durant with outrageous high (750k?) number player contract. Current actual number asking price, 425-500k+. Montreal with private pockets would be the destination.

Guys like you are why we lost millions in 2015 when we were paying Dressler, Chick, Durant & Getzlaf combined about 53% of the total player salary budget! If we keep listening to fans who would bankrupt us ... we won't have a team. Get real !

Durant's injury track record ????? What a crock of S_ _ T by jones !!!!

with a new team after dumping over paid guys who were a horrible team the year before, maybe check the previous yrs record and what Jones inherited. Durant has missed 2 full seasons, if hes not willing to take performance bonus's what does that say about his own confidence!

Keith Pottruff said...

That is a reasonable offer. And two major injuries costing him half of 2014 and all of 2015 plus several games in 2016 do warrant some caution.

The difference is Jones is building with his head and many fans are with their hearts.

If this team does not sign Durant I will personally picket the Rider's office, and bring all my Rider friends.

And, I have lots of those!

Sign the man already?

Is that not what they just proved they are trying to do. Does this guy deserve more than 400,000?

Bo levi makes it work at a reported 350,000.

Darian will now show if he actually wants to be in Sask. You are using circumstances to downplay facts. The facts are Durant has won four games in 16 starts over the last two seasons. Play 18 games and earn your money. It's the Saskatchewan way!

Durant contact worth - 200k - 240k.
280k top end max based on performance incentives.
Very reasonable offer taking in consideration comparable Bo Levi Mitchell 350k who is CFL elite.

Keith is so right. In Pro sports teams negotiate with their HEADS,
Idiot fans promote with their HEARTS.
ULTIMATELY it is the heads that win out. The offer to DD is very realistic. If Montreal wants to pay him a pile then let it be.
With Durant healthy he will pout if he doesn't play, so how in the world do we groom a young QB ?????
DD has said he wants to play & says he has 10 good years left & that he is an elite, best QB in Canada. He is dreaming & so are some fans & Scribes . You all know who!!!!!! If people want to pocket the Rider office, if Durant isn't signed, then ALL THE JONES FANS WILL SHOW UP TO OVER MATCH THEM!!!!!

The smart thing to do is sign Durant . If Jones thinks he can find another QB then he can always release Durant and be off the hook for the remainder of his salary . CFL contracts are not guaranteed tIL after labour day for veteran players and not at all for rookies .

Anonymous said...

I think this is a fair offer. Let's see how bad he really wants to play in Saskatchewan.

Anonymous said...

0-10 to start last year as a healthy QB.

I know you all want to blame the o-line, receivers, and coaches but 0-10 no matter who you want to blame, also has to lay on DD's shoulders as well.

If he is elite he would have won a couple of those games.

Durant wants to be paid on his past reputation. If he is so good then sign the deal and get paid on bonuses reached. It would make him the 4th highest in the league which in reality is pretty much where he belongs.

It's a fair offer, now we will see if he really wants to be here or if he just has $$$ in his eyes.

SIGN DURANT TO A NEW CONTRACT! We need to have a real QB leading our team in 2017. Don't try and sell a no-name QB on us, Jones. No Durant = no winning team AGAIN!

The salary negotiation numbers posted public usually don't mean squat. Usually they post the annual average of the deal.

The real numbers that should be telling about what the Riders have offered is:

How many years is the contract being offered for?
How much of the 300k salary is signing bonus or would it be on top of (because signing bonus portion counts against the cap whether DD gets hurt or cut)?

Sounds to me like Ed Hervey told Jones to take a hike. (Franklin)

For all the clowns that think the Riders do fine without Durant. How many quality (1st string on another team) players did he have surrounding him? Oh wait I see there were so many that made the League all star team. At least Chick (who many say was overpaid) went out and proved he was not over the hill, washed up, on the decline. Did more than any of the 90+ players that came through the door, even got recognized by the league.

I want DD signed with my head and my heart. Yes, I am a Durant fan. But my head knows that you groom a young QB under a veteran QB. We don't even have a young QB that looks particularly promising. Being a fan with both your head and your heart are not mutually exclusive. Those of us who want Durant signed are no more "idiot fans" than are those fans who have put complete faith in Jones. He has proved nothing here yet. He has not won a Grey Cup ring with any team that did not have a franchise QB. So what makes you think he can do that here? I do not think that we have a backup QB here that can win us more than 3 or 4 games. If Jones continues the revolving door policy on his 46 man roster, I will agree that it is irrelevant who our QB is because they will lose anyway. Durant has proven that he is a warrior here and can lead a team. Jones has proven nothing here. If you want to talk about going bankrupt and not having a team; then try going another year or two playing below 500 and not making the playoffs. Then see how many seats are filled. Durant can make the Riders competitive if he has a decent cast around him. Can Jones? Or perhaps Jones is only a great coach if he inherits a good team.

Picket at front of rider office?? Lol I like that idea. Heck we could opt out of showing up to the test event. Zero fans lol a bit unrealistic I know but that would show how much power the fans have. Reynolds would be sweating.

All seriousness I hope they can sign durant. When they do I'll be buying his jersey once again, if not than my money stays in my
Pocket and will go to games not wearing green.

Durant can play simple as that. As ugly as our line was last year he still performed took a beating. Not to often u see a guy stick around this long on one team.

If we get a rookie qb it's gonna be a dreadful year once again.

Maybe jones is the new Peter pocklington. Lol.

Anonymous said...

Actually it's fans like you that do not understand the QB position and make ridiculous embarrassing replies to a sound comment about resigning Durant. Your numbers on Chic and Dressler were way off. Plus there isn't a CFL team that isn't paying their starting QB at least $300K with bonuses and incentives except Montreal. Any time Darian had a team around him he performed at a high level and made the Ridets very competitive. Like Jones said last year. NFL ALL STAR Tom Brady couldn't have won games with the Oline and running back situation on the Ridets offence. The last time they put a team around Darian and he played the full season we won the Grey Cup.
Most of this Province truly has no idea about the QB position. You all think that QB's just grow on trees. Montreal hasn't been able to replace Calvino and how many years has that been. You talk about Injuries to Darian. He lost 1.5 years of his career. The first from an after the whistle blind side hit. Look at Ricky Ray or better yet look at Hamilton's Zach Collaros. He's missed more time since he signed with Hamilton in Jan 2014. In 3 years Zach has missed an enormous amount of games.
The problem here is that most of you were nothing but twinkles in your Daddy's eyes when SK went through an 11 drought of making the playoffs because we couldn't find a QB.
You don't dump or get rid of a good proven starting QB before you have his replacement in place. If you do you are going to lose for a long time. When your QB is bad you can't tell how good your Oline is. Or how good your receivers are. Simply because the QB can't get the ball to them. Plus the Oline might be good but your QB can't read a defence.
The Ridets are the wealthiest team in the CFL. If the Bombers and then the Argos can pay a back up QB like Willy a ridiculous amount of money at $400K. Then Darian is easily worth the $300K plus incentive bonuses.
When the Ridets have a young QB in camp that can start and finish a game like Darian did when he first started in the league. Then and only then do you replace your starter.
Only people with a football IQ of 9.7 or less would suggest dumping Darian and going into the season blindly hoping a young QB will step up in camp and be that leader. Why on Gods green Riders do you think Montreal wants to get Darian. Because there isn't anyone at this moment in time that can do that in the CFL. Darian will fix their mess after Calvillo went down. How many years has that been. Then even with a new and improved Oline. Better receivers a healthy RB and a defence playing together won't matter. Without a proven starter behind centre. The Riders will once again be the worst team in the league.

Comments like this proves SK fans IQ's regarding the QB position sit somewhere around a Neanderthal. Yes let's remove a CFL starting QB who has made it to the Grey Cup 3 times and won the last on in 2013 when there was an actual offence in place. Replace him with a QB that has proved nothing. I don't know how many times the stupidity of this Province fans have run a good QB out of town only to sit in the basement for the next 10 years. Just ask Montreal how they are doing since losing Calvillo how many years ago. The QBs that you think grow on trees must have had a few bad years. Otherwise amontreal would be awesome at the QB position once again. That's why they want Darian.
You don't run your starting QB out of town. When you have that young stud in your camp and he shows great promise like Darian did way back in 2006. Then you trade off or let your old QB go. Wake up people. You don't hope and pray a back up free agent QB is going to save your franchise. Demarco isn't even as good as back up Drew Willy is and Drew sucked horribly in Winnipeg.
Your comment on Demarco is null and void due to its simplistic idiotic thought process.

All I've got to say is that I was very happy when this came up on the Cage last night. I hope Darian once again feels respected and valued. I know it's not done but it seems closer.

I hope the Riders have done some soul searching and realized that the contributions of veteran players cannot be measured in how long their arms are or how high they can jump. Chick, Smith and Dressler releases were a mistake. Not only because of the contributions those players could have made but also because of leadership and helping the team achieve an identity.

In my opinion, cut throat organizations that treat special players with disdain to suit the whim of the moment will never be as genuinely successful as teams that are concerned with every aspect of sustained success.

Ryan Smith played several games with Winnipeg. Unfortunately, he was injured part of the season but he certainly did play for another team.

So Madani's high level sources say Durant is worth 400K.Madani works for a company that wants to rid Canada of the CFL, and now he is a puppet contract negotiator for CFL teams. Tampering?

I think he means Smith, the receiver, not the QB.

How many quarterbacks could take 41 sacks in a season, and train a never ending carasol of offensive players, running backs, receivers, oline and still have a career? Only a very good quarterback.

If this is the offer, $300,000 plus bonus, I think this is fair.

I hope DD stays, as I really can't see a replacement that will come in and learn a system, and then be able to teach a system to a new team in June. Especially if we have another roller coaster roster year. Stability and knowledge is needed to be sucuessful. How many blown plays last year alone because not everyone was on the same page?

I think DD has a few good years left, plus I think he would make a tremendous coach, like him or not, the team has always looked to his leadership, which is a valuable coaching asset. I would like to see him develop our new quarterback.

350 for what...two maybe three games....still pretty pricey for a guy who will be on IR real quick in to the season. Give him 350 if he plays the season...but do not make it locked in...have an injury clause. For the amount he's played in the last two years the team would be foolish to re-sign him without that clause. Even if he is healthy...he's old and he certainly is not Tom Brady.

I agree Bonnie. He's contributed to Saskatchewan not only as a Roughrider but other community gatherings. So dud Chick...Dressler and many others. Bringing many other cut players back they would have done fine last year. When DD wasn't there to lead they flopped. Being back an healthy they would have accomplshed much. Jones treated him like a guinea pig for his tryouts to target. Wish he'd go away. Will be an interesting year. He'd make a great coach. And he wants to stay in Regina and make it his home anyway.

Anonymous said...

Yes, it all makes so much sense - sign Kevin Glen for cheap for the 2017 season then go all out for Franklin for 2018 when he is a free agent and wanting to be a team's starter... no chance of winning the Grey Cup in 2017 no matter who we sign. It will be Bo Levi and the Stamp's year - don't believe me, just ask the Mueller family.

As much as I can see some merit to the "logical" or "non-emotional" argument of putting the team's interests ahead of the "emotional" or "human" stance of holding on to a loyal foot soldier for the team and community who took us to and won the Grey Cup (because of the position that this is a business, and winning pays the bills), my concerns have been and remain (i) if DD is gone, who is the replacement, as based upon the long line of auditions over the past couple of years, what is available is simply "not good enough" (ii) DD could be present to mentor the "next one" or heir apparent, if found, at a compromise compensation package, of more than the reported offer made to him but less than the ask from DD (iii) even should the plan be to move on or part ways with DD, it should be done by taking the high road, with some class and dignity, and
(iv) in life there are actually three certainties, and they are death, taxes, and whether it is in Saskatchewan or elsewhere, in the CFL, a team will not win without a decent QB. Period.

Anonymous said...

Even Tom Brady wouldn't look like Tom Brady behind our O line and a circus parade of receivers and running backs. QBs and receivers develop a sixth sense about each other over a few years together, not over a few quarters together. It strikes me as funny, if in fact it wasn't so sad that Chris Jones talks about developing a team without emotion entering into it when he is the most emotional coach in the CFL today. Every game in 2016, he paraded the sidelines displaying frustration, anger and at times, confusion. No cool, calm demeanor there. Yet now, we are to believe that he is dealing with Durant with no emotion, just well thought out logic. Okay. To quote Kavis Reed [another rabid side line presence], "there will be consequences".
