SUNDAY SPORTS

The Regina Thunder pitched a shutout over the second half, and romped to a 30-2 victory over the Edmonton Wildcats Saturday in Lloydminster in PFC preseason action.  Regina had a 23-2 lead at the break.  The Thunder host the Edmonton Huskies next Sunday at 1:00 pm at Mosaic Stadium.

Canada has its first medal of the Rio Olympics after the women's 4 by 100 relay swim team won bronze in the opening day's final event in the pool. Canada was in third for most of the race. Sixteen-year-old Penny Oleksiak held off the Netherlands with a strong anchor leg. Australia won gold, while the United States took silver.

Vancouver's Vasek Pospisil didn't last long in men's singles action at the Rio Olympics. He fell in straight sets to France's Gael Monfils in opening round play. Monfils smashed four aces and broke the Canadian five times. Earlier, Eugenie Bouchard downed American Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-3.

A big comeback win for the Ottawa Redblacks. They came back late in the fourth quarter to beat the Edmonton Eskimos 23-20 at T-D Place Stadium. Chris Milo kicked a 25-yard field goal with 1:34 to play to put Ottawa in front for good. A 48-yard interception return by Jermaine Robinson set up Milo's third field goal of the game.

The Kansas City Royals finally found a way to slow down Aaron Sanchez. The Royals scored four runs off the Toronto right-hander in a 4-2 victory at Kauffman Stadium. Sanchez had entered the game on a 10-game winning streak. He hadn't lost since April 22nd against Oakland. Sanchez gave up nine hits over six innings of work.

Home Run Derby champion Giancarlo Stanton hit a homer an estimated 504 feet for Miami at Coors Field. It was the longest homer in the majors this season and the longest in the 22-year history of Coors Field. The previous mark was 496 feet by Hall of Fame catcher Mike Piazza in 1997. Stanton also hit a homer measured at 494 feet in Coors Field in 2012.

Marlon Hairston had a goal and an assist to help the Colorado Rapids beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-nil. The Whitecaps lost their second in a row and are winless in their last four. Meanwhile in Toronto, Sebastian Giovinco scored a hat trick and TFC beat New England 4-1. While in Montreal, the Impact edged struggling Houston 1-nil.
