SCRUFFY'S THIS 'N THAT

Welcome to Friday!  Here are the weekly collection of thoughts running through my muddled mind, and as always, they come in no particular order!

--LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!!

Let my body endure having to climb the ramps, and let me growl at the mere sight of Worksafe Bob as yes it is pre-season, but Riders football is back and for those of us who have had to depend on Rod Pedersen, Luc Mullinder, Murray McCormick and Lee Jones to tell me what is going on, it is now my chance to see the Saskatchewan Roughriders up close. There are several guys I want to get a look at, but Darian Durant won't be one of them as Chris Jones says he will dress, but not play.  I understand Jones wants to look at who the number 2 will be, but I also think Darian needs a couple of series just to get back into it after a year and a half on the sidelines. At the end of the day, it is the first pre-season game and many won't be around after this game so I'm not going to get that excited, but I do want to see the new look defence, I do want to see what the receiving corps looks like and I do want to see the size of this team. I am already thinking about leaving a stool in the area where the coaches news conference is after the game so I can take it into the dressing room and see eye-to-eye with some of these behemoths.

-- Is it somewhat concerning that Justin Capiccotti and Jeff Knox Junior have not really practiced with the team this year after suffering injuries early on in camp. You need those two to be successful!

-- In an earlier column, I said I don't like bashing the CFL, but they make it too easy. The latest chapter in the book comes from Wednesday's pre-season opener in Winnipeg where the league website was about as effective as a trapdoor on a lifeboat. In the words of Edmonton Sun columnist, Terry Jones, "New CFL website totally useless". Yes, I realize it is opening night and there are going to be bugs. but do you test this stuff out beforehand or just roll it out and cross your fingers. I think its the latter.   This doesn't happen in other leagues. There again lies the credibility argument.

-- I am assuming TSN will be doing their top 50 CFL players special before the season starts. I don't know about you, but for me the conversation starts and stops at Bo Levi Mitchell.

-- It is no secret I am not a fan of the NHL on Sportsnet. One of the reasons are the personalities. Yes, there are some good ones like Elliotte Friedman, Kelly Hrudey, Rich Sutter and Daren Millard, but there are some real meatballs as well like Healy, Kypreos and John Shannon. How about this beauty from Shannon this week when asked about the future of Regina native Tyler Bozak. Shannon surmised it will be tough for the Leafs to trade Bozak or any other player because “I’m not sure that anybody that comes out of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization is somebody you want.” Really John?? Have you looked at the rosters of the two Stanley Cup teams. Where did Phil Kessel, Roman Polak and James Reimer come from? #idiot

-- Congratulations to the new interim director of athletics at the University of Regina. I don't know how long Tanya Reynoldson will have the job, but I love the hire. Tanya knows what is going on in Cougarland having not only been a Cougar athlete, but now working as the marketing and promotions co-ordinator. She has a huge task in trying to attract people to Cougar games and despite the fact she has a real schmuck serving as the P-A announcer at basketball games, she does a great job.

-- While handing out congratulations, congratulations goes out to Pats assistant coach Dave Struch. Struch was named an assistant coach for one of the Canada teams that will compete at the World Under 17 challenge. I have said it before and I will say it again....I don't know if the Pats are as successful as they have been the last two years without Struch. Take nothing away from the job John Paddock has done, but Struch deserves just as much credit.

-- Did San Jose just delay the inevitable or is the Stanley Cup Final going to go 7? What a wild first period in Game 6. Martin Jones won the head-to-head battle against Matt Murray. Jones has been through this before albeit as a backup with L-A. Murray has not. I can't see Mike Sullivan going to Marc-Andre Fleury in Game 6, but if the Sharks win that one and Murray struggles like he did in Game 6, I might be tempted to throw Fleury in there. What an enormous letdown for the Penguins and their fans.

-- San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner wants to compete in the Home-Run Derby at Baseball's all-star game. I say why not? I think that would be a lot of fun for the Giants pitcher and for baseball fans.

-- The Kansas City Royals and Toronto Blue Jays don't like one another. The Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles don't like one another and we know the Blue Jays and Texas Rangers aren't going to exchange Xmas cards anytime soon. I would love if the American League's final four were the Rangers, Jays, Royals and Orioles.

-- That's all I got. Have a great weekend!

Healy , Kypreos and Shannon must e "Paying" the station to stay on there. When those duds are on is when I change channels. I just cannot listen to them, so Scruffy you hit the nail on the head on that comment. I hope enough people read this and maybe we can at least get rid of Kypreos and Shannon.

All you reporters, watch your step! Scruffy's going to be leaving a stool in the news conference interview area.

You're going to defecate in the coaches interview area ???

Three things:

1. I hate that the preseason game is a fully priced game but has very few names playing that people want to see. How much would people pay to see a Garth Brooks soundcheck that doesn't include Garth Brooks or his main band, just the roadies up there?

2. What kind of shape can a guy be in if he has to 'endure' ramps when walking? Not good.

3. It's ok to bring a stool to the game and put it in the dressing room as long as the rider's don't leave one on the field!

RIP Gordie Howe

What next? Peeing in the cold tub?

I'd guess TSN gives the top player to Mike Reilly since it always is so heavily based on the previous year rather than potential going forward

The loons are out today it would seem.

On a serious note, another sporting legend has left us with the news of Gordie Howe's passing. First Ali and now Mr. Hockey. A tough week for sports.

6'1 220 lbs. The one thing I will NOT miss about Mosaic Stadium is the walk up the ramps into the 200's. Just one more year of doing it.

RIP to Mr. Hockey.

Capiccotti... listed day to day, hmmm... 2016 season team distraction developing? Such high hpoes to this player aquistion.

Why isn't DD playing?? I have a feeling he's not 100% yet.

Anonymous said...

Capicotti = Emry???? Hmmmmm!!! Get better Eric Norwood!

The tools left when Chamblin and Taman were fired and the stools were removed when Jones took over.

The conspirators are out in full force today. yikes!!!

Scruffy said, "I am already thinking about leaving a stool in the area where the coaches news conference is".

That seems kind of rude Scruffy, don't you think?

If you are that upset about something you maybe need to find another way to show your displeasure. Come on man, to drop a stool anywhere other than in a toilet, really seems the wrong thing to do.

I'm just say'n...

Why cant we come to read a blog without all the bad talk of people. There are some great comments on here then you get the loonies that have no brains. Sorry to see this stuff Scruffy and Rod.

To Emerald Park Guy,

Although I agree with your comments, today seems relatively mild in comparison...

I actually enjoyed reading the stool jokes, seems nice to have a joke day rather than all the scathing no brain comments that usually occur demonstrating hate and ignorance.

I do think you make a good point though...

Once again the idiots and trolls take over RP.com, but RP is too dense to see that it brings down the quality so whatever!

A lot of good points brought up today, but the immaturity of many ruins it.

Again whatever!

Rod has to thrive on haters. That's 90% of his readers.

Anonymous said...

Hey, lighten up. It's funny!

Anonymous said...

Come on Rod. Taking shots at other broadcasters. That's for small market wannabes. You're better than that.

What are you talking about.

What am I talking about?

"It is no secret I am not a fan of the NHL on Sportsnet. One of the reasons are the personalities. Yes, there are some good ones like Elliotte Friedman, Kelly Hrudey, Rich Sutter and Daren Millard, but there are some real meatballs as well like Healy, Kypreos and John Shannon."

Classless Rod. Everyone has guys they like and dislike but the pros never bash one another.

I saw Scruffy ride a gator cart (as the passewnger) up to the press box at a Rider game in late autumn 2012

Anonymous said...

How many lil ones do Scruffy Blair and his wife Angel have now? No wonder he has no energy to walk the Taylor Field ramps. Permission to keep using the Gator cart.

Whatever gets you through the night? I would love to know what goes through the mind of the knuckle-dragger who thinks they are so "smart" with their completely ignorant comments. You must all be pillars of the community.

Lotta class being displayed again today. Can't wait to see what the mouth-breathers have planned for tomorrow. Will this be the place to laugh my a$$ off or will it be Riderfans? Hmmmm!!

Your blog, your name on it, your accountable for everything on it.

Maybe throw up a 'views expressed by guest columnists don't reflect the views of Pedersen Media' disclaimer if you don't back what's on your blog genius.
