SCRUFFY'S THIS 'N THAT

Welcome to Friday!  Here are the weekly collection of thoughts running through my muddled mind, and as always, they come in no particular order!

-- If what I am hearing is right, there are some who make the decisions when it comes to the Riders Plaza of Honor who are against Kerry Joseph being enshrined. ????? How can he not be?

Ron Lancaster, Kent Austin, Kerry Joseph and Darian Durant are the only four QB's to take this team to a Grey Cup. Joseph did it in a year when he was named the Most Outstanding Player. This shouldn't even be a debate. Word is Joseph doesn't meet the "stipulations" needed to get in. Stipulations,  shmipulations. Put KJ in and stop the nonsense. By the way, in this farewell season of Mosaic Stadium, the Riders should commission a print featuring the stadium and its 4 GC winning quarterbacks. I think a few Rider fans from near and far would plunk some money down to get one of those.

-- Are the Regina Pats contemplating a bid for the Memorial Cup in 2019?  When Pats president Todd Lumbard was asked that question during the Access/SHAW broadcast of Game 7 between his team and the Red Deer Rebels, he didn't say no. Regina hosted the Memorial Cup back in 2001 and it was a very successful event even though the home team had to basically re-shape their roster as the season went on because of poor play which resulted in the cupboard being left bare for years to come.

I would think after 18 years, it would be time to bring back Canada's major junior hockey championship to the Brandt Centre, but could that come at Moose Jaw's expense.  Mosaic Place is one of the best "small" venues in Western Canada. It has hosted many events like the Telus Cup and the Scotties and many concerts like Carrie Underwood and Toby Keith.  I think the city could go a tremendous job of hosting the event, but a solid business plan would be needed much like it would be here.

2019 is a long ways away, but I don't see the event going back to Alberta---although I am sure the Edmonton Oil Kings would love to have the event at Rogers Place.  It was just in Saskatchewan in 2013 when the Blades hosted so perhaps there is a desire by WHL and CHL brass to take the event to BC or perhaps the U-S.  Only one bid can be successful, and perhaps neither city will make a bid, but if Regina or Moose Jaw could host the 2019 Mem Cup, you would have one backer right here. It would be fantastic.

-- As the 2nd round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, we are now without the Canadian teams, Los Angeles, Anaheim, the Rangers and Chicago. I am thinking many in the hockey world are hoping the Washington-Pittsburgh series will keep the hockey universe interested.

-- The Canadian hockey universe will obviously be interested in the NHL draft lottery on Saturday.  Just for you-know-whats and giggles, I ran the NHL draft simulator one last time and here is how it came out:

-- On a personal level, I would love to see Auston Matthews end up with the Calgary Flames. Having Matthews on the Flames and Connor McDavid on the Oilers would spruce up "The Battle of Alberta". It will never be the same as it used to be, but it would be good for the rivalry. I just don't want him going to Toronto. Much like McDavid, the kid doesn't deserve that.  There is also a rumour going around about PK Subban being an Oiler with players like Oscar Klefbom, Andrej Sekera, Taylor Hall and perhaps Matthews if the Oilers get the pick going the other way. I just have one word to say that and I will say it several times. NO, NO and NOOOOOOOO! My thoughts on Subban over the years on this blog haven't changed. I'm not a fan of his game at all.  A guy who I have become a fan of with his play in the playoffs has been St. Louis' Colton Parayko. That kid can play and will be a top 10 blueliner within the next three years.

-- I have blocked some rubber in my younger years, but for the life of me, I can't imagine why anyone would want to stand 15 feet in front of Shea Weber when he blasts one. It shocks me that more guys aren't injured blocking his devastating howitzers from the point.

-- The Game 5 win for the Raptors was improbable the way they had played for three quarters, but firing the confetti cannon was a little much. You didn't do anything!! Do that if you win the series, but doing it after a win that puts you up 3-2 is a little over the top. By the way, I just one want to see someone rifle a ball off of Drake's face before the playoffs are over.  This just in----YOU"RE NOT ON THE TEAM!

--  A study came out this week saying dogs don't like to be hugged. ????? Are the people responsible for this study going to come out and say young men between the ages of 15-24 have no idea what online porn is. The sad thing is someone paid money to whoever did this study.

-- High Impact Wrestling's version of Wrestlemania goes tonight at the Highland Club as "Spring Meltdown" takes place.  Those who know me know I love my wrestling---it has been that way since I was going to the old Exhibition Auditorium for Stampede Wrestling in the 80's. It is always an interesting night when I journey into "Gronkville" (my name for some of the "creatures" that come out of the woodwork to attend the event) to witness what is about to take place. These guys don't do it for the fame or the money, they do it because they love it and they love to entertain.  BTW, two thumbs up to the Leader-Post's Mark Melnychuk for his great profile piece on HIW wrestler Alexander Prime this week. If there is anyone from the current roster who will make it in the business, it is this kid. What he does in the ring is outstanding, and I think the surface has just barely been scratched on his potential.

-- I've got some more thoughts bouncing around the brain, but I will save it for Monday's column or perhaps throw it into next Friday's "This and That"

-- That's all I got. Have a great weekend everyone!

Heard you are buying tonight at wrestling!

I'm glad the riders use the American spelling of "Honour" on their Plaza of Honor. Marketing wise, the American spelling makes everything so much easier.

I hope the Oilers DO get the overall first pick then trade it down for a very good established defenceman. Not Subban

Anonymous said...

I would put KJ in ahead of Barrett or Shivers.

I would not at all be surprised to see Subban go to Edmonton or some other team. There has been so many Rumors of him leaving Montreal that I really believe it could happen this year. I think more than a "Sore Neck" ended his playing days this year and it just all seems to be adding up that a change will take place. Believe me the Habs will get lots for him.

- Kerry Jo to the Plaza is an absolute no-brainer. I think he should be in even if he had 'only' won MOP. With the Grey Cup there shouldn't be any discussion despite the length of his Rider career.

- Drake IS actually on the Raptors. I'm guessing you're not pumped for Views based on the rifle the ball off his face comment? He's helped make the team more of a destination and when he's there being a fan it only adds to the atmosphere. Other teams must agree with the positive impact because they are signing similar deals with local celebrity fans, the most recent example I saw being Chance the Rapper with the White Sox. Can't argue about the confetti cannon point, though if I'm being honest I didn't even notice it after game 5. What a comeback.

Dan Rashovich is in the Plazoo but folks don't want KJ? Wow.

Yes, it was a long time ago, but Regina hosted a Memorial Cup. Go back and they have hosted two since the Agridome opened. Give MJ an opportunity. I think they would be a great host.

Anonymous said...

KJ in the Plaza? Absolutely. He would be better than some of the stiffs in there now!

Anonymous said...

I've been an Edmonton Oilers fan since day 1.

The last decade has been really frustrating as the team's brass has made a lot of bad choices. However that dark past would pale in comparison to trading for PK Subban.

Why do you think Montreal is shopping PK?

Mr. Scruffy!
You were on Access 7 last night, did my eyes decieve me or what? Your hair is green or the plasma flat screen gone bad? Hope that pilitical plaza of honor is not a carry over to the new stadium, its a sad old archaic past its day exercise that the average person could care less about. Have a good day/weekend Mr Scruffy/Mr. Pedersen.

I hope that Medicine Hat makes a bid for the Mem Cup. They've got a great new barn...I imagine there would be a cost to hosting such an event, and the Maser brothers have been known to be a tad cheap...

Anonymous said...

Of course KJ should be in the Plaza and who ever it is that is blocking it should be removed from a position of power.

Anonymous said...

in most organizations KJ is a borderline guy for plaza induction, but based on the Riders list of guys that are already in there he is an automatic.

I don't know how that process goes but some of these guys over KJ is nothing short of embarrassing.

Anonymous said...

KJ most certainly be in rather than Barrett or Shivers! There should be no doubt about it.

Anonymous said...

Plaza is a joke. Used to be only for the 'ELITE' now any one who had any form of success seems to get in. Except for the guy that turned this franchise around and helped it become what it is today: Mr. Shivers

2019 1s either the 100 or 101 for the M Cup so would it not be fitting to be hosted by the oldest Junior team in Canada. Whom would be 102 in 2019

Anonymous said...

Your opinion concurred. But here's a further suggestion, remove the old boys club plaza of honor with all its membership, get rid of it.

Subban for Hall would be the best thing for both teams. 100%

You say the Oilers don't need Subban,a Norris trophy winner because he came off an off year where he made some obvious mistakes but guess what? That's what leaders do sometimes, they try to do too much because they believe in themselves so much. It's not called being selfish, it's called having unharnessed confidence in a time where no one else has anything going on at all.

Hall is a one zone player who is all about himself. Just watching his interviews every time he is asked about Mcdavid he always answers with a story about himself or says something to make it sound like Connor is on the same level as everyone else, he can't stand having a better offensive player than himself on the team. He will not win enough games or show up enough for a team to be the man, yet still he needs to be on a team where he is the go to guy. This is why his teams struggle to make the playoffs and always will, he has to be the man or else he will sulk. If he plays all the time for a team and is their go to guy they will rarely make the playoffs, except maybe Montreal if price is healthy all year long. You can't have a guy like him as your go to guy, we have seen how this has worked out so far but because he looks so strong and fast and has such a good shot people all talk like he is an all-star. He is only an all-star offensively but how good is that when you are minus most of the time?? How many big game points does Hall get? How many are the last two goals in a 5-1 win?

So the Oil would get a top pair d man with a Norris and Montreal would get the scoring they need up front because they are solid on D when Price is in the net. To me this is a no brainer both ways.....

Jared Dumba

Anonymous said...

It's a no brainer! Mr. Roy Shivers should be automatically enshined into the Saskatchewan Roughriders Plaza of Honor. What's wrong with some people? Redneck racists or what?

Anonymous said...

Shivers turned the Riders around? Did you watch the Riders back then? If you were not black you were no good plus he upset Burris and he left the Riders. You must be Shivers writing his own scrip

Anonymous said...

If Shivers is so good, why didn't he improve the Lions?

Anonymous said...

The list of former Riders who are not in the Plaza is shorter than the actual inductees. I doubt KJ loses any sleep over it.

Anonymous said...

The Lions won the Grey Cup when he went back there. It's racism plain and simple. Roy rubs people the wrong way and it's that simple. He wouldn't come here either. So he'll enjoy retirement, Danny will enjoy life in the NFL, and you guys can sit up there in Canada and the worst part of it and bellyache.

Anonymous said...

Classic line though - Roy was asked who should replace him as GM of the Riders and he responds, "Oh Mitchell Blair." lol.

Anonymous said...

PK Subban is the most over-rated d-man in the NHL. If he is so good, why was he the odd man out at the last Olympics? Simple, the coaching staff knew what a liability he is. Saw the Habs in Winnipeg this year and he was absolutely atrocious. Two horrible giveaways cost Montreal the two points.

Oilers can find a much better trading partner and perhaps not give away as much for a guy like Hamonic or Shattenkirk.

BC did NOT win the grey cup after he went there. Shivers was fired by the Riders in 2005 and was not hired by BC until 2008. BC won the Grey cup in 2004 and have not had a sniff since Shivers was hired. Get your facts straight. Absolutely Shivers should NOT be in plaza

Anonymous said...

They can't even come close to selling out Red Deer's barn for this Brandon Eastern Conference Championship series. Med Hat would be even less fans for the overall revenues required from host city.

Drake might be a clown but from a guy who broadcasts games thinking he deserves a Grey Cup ring this is a pretty silly thing to say about him "not being on the team."

Anonymous said...

Victoria is all in for the next Mem cup out west, withdrew bid last time late and said it would focus on the next one.

Anonymous said...

I disagree with Jared Dumba and totally agree with Greg. The media forced Team Canada to take PK Subban to the Olympics but he wasn't on the roster for most games and the ones where he was dressed he rode the pine. But when Canada won and it was time for the team photo, guess who was dead centre in the middle of the picture. In PK's mind it's all about him. Besides being overrated he's not good for a team and that's why Montreal would like to deal him.

To the Anon calling our part of Canada the worst part is obviously an uneducated person who feels they know something through rumours and innuendo. This part of Canada has the most amount of sunshine in a year. This part of Canada has the cleanest air to breath. This part of Canada has been fortunate not to have areas like East Hastings in Vancouver.
For the longest time it was the best kept secret. Young family's could afford to buy a home and raise their family in a safe environment. Unfortunately that secret got out and the people did come. The economy is the strongest here in all of Canada so the price of realestae has been driven up to ridiculous numbers. That is the only unfortunate thing happening here.
I have lived in Greater Vancouver and every rainy season felt like we were in the matrix. No sunshine for 90 days. Just low cloud cover and rain and rain and rain. I lived in Edmonton for 3 years and had never experienced colder winters than I did in that City. I sure am glad I dont live in Alberta. Between the oil industry and the NDP government Alberta is a sad sad state. Finally Manitoba is removing their dark clouds and things will only get better there. The NDP government has taxed the citizens of Manitoba to death. But hey the Unions are strong. Why aren't the people?
Right now SK is a great place to live and I for one am nothing but content and happy each day it takes me 11 minutes to drive to work. I had no idea SK was going to be this good when I was transferred here. Fortunately some of this Province still has some of its best kept secrets for the locals.

Gwil26, your stupidity is on display

1) Rod Pedersen did not write this column. While it is on his blog, if you look, the posting comes from his good friend Mitchell Blair (Scruffy)

2) Rod Pedersen absolutely deserves a Grey Cup ring for both 2007 and 2013 because as the play by play voice of the team, he is a part of the team. It is what classy organizations do. They reward the people that help in their success and Rod did that as do many other p x p guys in professional sports.

Go back to your menial little job now and remember to ask customers if they have Air Miles or need a lottery ticket. Thanks for the input.

Get your facts straight smart guy, B.C won the grey cup in 2006 and 2011 not 2004 so maybe you should know your facts before speaking…Uninformed Riders once again

Anonymous said...

Raptors should quite all this WE ARE THE NORTH campaign. They don't represent us, they represent Toronto and they aren't even the most northern city in the NBA. Besides they play out of Toronto, so they are losers.

I guess if they want that campaign, the Riders should go with WE ARE THE CFL.

Agree!!!

You guys do realize that Scruffy and Rod are two different people, right?

Anonymous said...

Regina and Saskatoon both lead Vancouver in more than sunshine especially comparing the ghetto areas
1. Roughriders over Lions. Rider gear predominates in any demographic in this province.
2. More homicides
3. More weather related injuries and deaths (try sleeping out in the winter)
4. More STDs. Hastings street is not even close. Check the facts.
5. More alcohol abuse.
6. Better hidden. Everyone knows about east Hastings street.

It wasn't that long ago the junkies in Vancouver were attacking elderly people as they walked in public.

I'm sure the video is still on YouTube somewhere.
