WHEAT KINGS 8 PATS 1

Keith Hershmiller Photography
Regina, SK – The Regina Pats (31-28-3-4) concluded a four-game homestand in ugly fashion, losing 8-1 to the Brandon Wheat Kings (43-18-4-2) at the Brandt Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Game Story
The Regina Pats fell behind early to the East Division-leading Brandon Wheat Kings, spotting them a 3-0 lead after one period.  Brandon’s goals came from Jordan Thompson, Jayce Hawryluk and Ivan Provorov.  Pats Goaltender Tyler Brown lasted one period giving up three goals on nine shots.

The Pats turned to rookie goalie Jordan Hollett in period two.  Hollett did not fare much better surrendering Brandon goals to Reid Duke, Tim McGauley and Ivan Provorov to make it 6-0.  The Provorov goal came on the power-play, with Regina facing a two man advantage, as a result of a partial line brawl that saw the Pats' James Hilsendager, and Brandon’s Shael Higson each receive a game misconduct.

Regina broke the shutout with a late goal in the third by Cole Sanford.  The Wheat Kings also added two more for the 8-1 victory.

Quick Hits
- Adam Brooks now has points in 18 consecutive games with 38 points (8G, 30A).
- Cole Sanford now has points in four consecutive games with 6 points (5G, 1A)
- Today’s attendance 5699

What’s Next?
The Regina Pats hit the road for a quick trip down Highway One to Swift Current where they will take on Broncos in a Wednesday night match-up.  This is the first time since early February the Pats have more than one day off between games. The face-off is 7 p.m. from the Credit Union iPlex.  You can listen to the action on Bennett Dunlop Ford Pats Hockey on 620 CKRM with the pregame show getting underway at 6:35 p.m.

Pats were really shining today losing 8-1 in front of disgruntled fans again.

The Pats looked like a low end Tier 2 Jr team. At this late stage of the season they still don't have guys buying into the program? If the coaches can't get them to buy in they don't have a sniff. Either the players aren't good enough and coachable enough, or the coaches can't get through. Why is this defence so bad at this stage? It also shows that the Pats are far too small to compete in any prolonged playoff series. They lost every battle and are simply too physically inferior to do much.

Fans showed, to bad the Pats didn't.

Brooms in Brandon and Lethbridge await. It's a sweep in 4 games when they play the Pats. Another first round exit! Makes me want to renew my season tickets for next year. Yeah right !

It's not over till the fat lady sings. Bruce has your wife/boyfriend sung yet! Last night was not good at all however I still support the team. Leave your seats Bruce for true fans and have your wife sing elsewhere.

Why are the Wheat Kings good year after year? Why can't this be replicated in Regina? Regina has some nice pieces but Brandon is so deep. Every year I think "Ok Brandon went for it last year, traded away a lot of their young guys... they'll likely have to enter a bit of a re-build phase"... but thats never the case!!

Anonymous said...

That was an ugly one. Not really surprised as Brandon outscored MJ 13-5 the past 2 games and then Saskatoon 12-2 earlier in the week. They are an elite team loaded with depth. I will still support the team and they will bounce back and be ready for the playoffs no matter who they face (hopefully not Brandon!!)

Congrats to Brooks for keeping his streak alive and not giving Papirny the shutout. That was the only highlight of the night!

Thanks to the organization for the final post-game skate. The kids sure enjoy being on the ice with their idols.

Finish strong Pats!

Brandon has better players and coaching than they Pats, and it would be foolish to think otherwise. Pats talent has been vastly overrated and needs a serious upgrade and it's not just youth. #6 may be the worst 19 year old d-man in the WHL. Brandon didn't win just by talent alone as they outmuscled the Pats all game. They couldn't touch their size, strength, or work ethic. They won every single battle. Take a look at Patrick and Steel out there. Who would you have drafted? A 5'10" centre or a 6'3" scoring machine. Kelly knows what he's doing. Brandon doesn't rebuild, they reload. If the Pats are hoping this rag tag bunch are going to be contenders next season…good luck with that.

Brandon will be in Red Deer this spring, and likely top of the conference again next year.

I second this, this was well put!!

Steel was supposed to be the ""future of the League" and a highly touted draft pick...yet has been nothing but average at best. Eberle, Weal, Steel, nope, not even close.

Our defence is brutal and I don't see this team getting any better in the next 2 years for that reason I will not be renewing my season tickets of 26 years. I'm still upset about last years trades, and the fact they want my season ticket money by April 30th. The memorial cup isn't till May long weekend at least wait till the season ends.

Every good team in the league uses a strength coach….do the Pats? They seem to be physically inferior.

Anonymous said...

Pats will be bigger, stronger and better next year, building for the future is how Junior Hockey works. McCrimmon is able to put together teams that are bigger and stronger than division opponents. Never able to put together an elite team that can compete for the Memorial Cup, closest they got was when they hosted and got the loser pass to the tournament, losing a close 9-1 decision.

Anonymous said...

Don't count on a sweep to the Hurricanes. That's a soft hockey team that hasn't any playoff experience on the team. If anything the Pats would definitely love to play Lethbridge.

Anonymous said...

It's the KELLY McCrimmon effect! You don't hang around Junior hockey for 35 years and fail. His depth is reflected in good annual scouting and drafting. He makes great trades that ALWAYS favour the Wheat Kings. And finally, he doesn't tolerate any bullshit with his players...play his way or you get shipped out in a trade. This is why Brandon is always near the top.
Oh yeah, he's got the referees pretty deep in his pocket too!

Won't be renewing our Pats seats after 39 years. Disgrace.

George

william weppler said...

Yea agree Brandon has perenial good team but when have they last won a Mem Cup?
Disgrace??? What are you talking about George. The hockey has been just as entertaining or maybe better since the new Owners came into effect. They said they are going to take the time to rebuild and I haven't seen any change in that direction. When did you ever hear "re-build" with the Parkers and obviously you stuck it out with them (for some reason). Why are you jumping ship now?
I am not sure what some of you fans want. This is Junior hockey and inconsistency is common at this level. Every Team is going to have bad games once in a while. Pats just coming off a long win streak and a "thousand" games in a terrible schedule...they look tired and no wonder. We are in the playoffs and should concentrate on resting some of the players if necessary to be fresh for whomever they face. I have been a season ticket holder for a number of years now (after a lapse for awhile) and will continue to be for a lot more. For $13 a ticket it is well worth the price. I enjoy watching boys come into the league and mature into young men doing what they enjoy. I don't expect them to win very night nor should any fan; just not gonna happen. Besides the actual hockey, the atmosphere and comaderie amongst the fans around us is enough to keep me coming back. If you can't enjoy it then by all means dump your tickets...I am sure someone else will step into your seat no problem.

Anonymous said...

Well put Mr.Weppler you make intelligent points that reflect your understanding of Junior Hockey. For old George I expect he is celebrating his 39th year of not renewing his season tickets

Anonymous said...

Well said William Weppler! Your comments are always great!

It's been an inconsistent year this year but they're in the playoffs for the 3rd straight year and the hockey and the game day experience have been so much better since the new ownership! When we renew our seats we'll have to check out some of the new vacant spots and possibly upgrade with all these former, disgraced fans who are not renewing.

William Weppler you are the type of fan that has caused this franchise to be the perennial loser it is. You have no right to criticize George. You don't pay attention to any detail and are happy to go to a game, drink coffee with a bunch of other know littles and care little about the product on ice. Then you sit about and make up every excuse you can about the performance of the team. You pay little heed to the assessment and warnings that the coaches have been speaking about. Don't criticize Brandon because at least they get there fairly often. The Pats haven't won a Memorial Cup since 1974 and that equates to 42 years in my book; disgrace??? Hardly what's expected out of a flagship team. If you set your expectation very low(as you do) then that's what you will achieve. It won't cost you anything to go to the seniors centre, drink coffee and play cards if socialization is all you care about. Teams and organizations are judged by the championships they win. The Pats have not held up their end when it comes to winning these. They have been a perpetual .500 club accomplishing very little year after year. For years now the fans have been saying let's get this show on the road. Sadly they have a tough time getting out of the ditch. People want and are entitled to better.

lol... The Pats get blown out by the best team in the league, a team that's been blowing pretty well EVERYONE out, and now they are an embarrassment and people deserve better?!?! This just sounds like the typical SK mentality of complaining about anything.

This team is still in an effing rebuild. Next season isn't even what they are building for, so calm down you dimwits. This team is still one of the youngest in the league and have proven they can play against pretty well any team in the league. There are obviously things that need to be worked on, but complaining to the extent that people are here is just ridiculous. The new regime and past two seasons has been the most exciting brand of hockey in years. People seem to forget just a few years ago, the Pats were an overly defensive minded team where many star players weren't able to produce until they were traded away. That is, if those star players even reported. With the exception of a few players that were given the OK to be creative(which still resulted in missing playoffs), the brand was boring and infuriating to watch. The only thing you would look forward to was hopefully some fights.

The Pats are heading in the right direction right now. The 17 year old group is going to be together for two more full seasons and at that time, the Pats could have some of the leagues best overagers, if not lost to the Pros. Not to mention, there is some great talent and size coming up that the Pats haven't traded away for quick fixes(see Parker regime). This team is in the best shape in over a decade and is actually able to recruit players now. BUT... complain away!!

This team DOES have the making to be a strong, tough, fast team with plenty of size and skill. Skill that has yet to develop. Something many here don't seem to realize needs time. Brooks ring a bell??

You can complain if the Pats aren't doing anything in two years time, and if that happens I'll gladly eat crow, but I wouldn't count on it. Now go back to what you guys do best and complain about the Roughriders. I mean, this IS a Roughrider blog, right?!?! SMH...Dimwits

Very well said I used to go because we would socialize and see people only in the winter but now I'm just frustrated by the product on the ice and price increase. The on ice product has not been entertaining this year it's been inconsistent and mistakes that should not happen at this stage of the season. You look at the lineup and next year doesn't look any better.

It's not going to be Lethbridge, Red Deer is going to win that Div and sweep the Pats easily (see game last Monday at Brandt Centre)

william weppler said...

wow!...to the poster who said I was critical...take a pill maybe.

Wheaties last won a Mem Cup in 1949 so you must think they are really really disgraceful. I don't.

Just wondering why George (at least he posted one of his names) is bailing after all those years as a supporter? Can do what he wants but it can't be because of the new ownership who are 2 years into a complete rebuild?

I do have high expectations!...I expect Pats to win every game but then there is reality...and the Sun will come up the next day regardless...no need to lose a lot of sleep over it.

Don't drink coffee at the games...the odd Beer, but mostly Spiced Rum if you want to bring one up - 1st row - Section 208; maybe bring a few up for the other "know littles" too :))

William, good comments. However, the trophy is called the Memorial Cup. I agree with Don Cherry that shortening the name to Mem Cup is disrespectful to those it is intended to honor.

Well I sit in 3rd row 208. 26 yrs and I'm done.

Lol what a bunch of quitters, every year they say they will not renew but come back every year. I guess its better than kicking the dog.

Well said William.

I read and listen to your comments. There well thought out and you stand behind them with your name. That says something.

Unlike the people who throw insults behind "anonymous".

I'm corrected Kevin...went to the Kings web site and read the 1st paragraph of thier history info...assumed the way it started they had won that year...but yes they lost in an 8 game final. THx.

the Wheaties have never won the memorial cup William What a disgraceful team lol

but what is more disgraceful s Wheaties fans coming on a regina and sask blog and bash the pats you really show how immature you are

Hey Bill . Your the voice of reason on a comment section full of crazies (see anything riders). I too was at the game . Found myself bitching to my friend how poorly we were playing but had to remind myself these are just (mostly) unpaid kids. They're gonna have a stinker from time to time. Yes frustrating but I believe this ownership will do what's right for this team. I don't attend many games but the few I have I'm concerned about our size against powerhouse teams going forward. Brooks may just go pro next year. I haven't seen a great game out of zbrovsky yet.. hes just big and was scouted because of it. I think we might have missed on Steel but hey Benson in Vancouver isn't doing much either. Can't predict injuries. Sometimes I think mccrimmon has a golden horseshoe hidden somewhere but hey.. he knows the game.. drafting a big kid like Nolan is a pretty safe play at 6th (I think). Keep up the great insight Bill I'd buy you a Rum Any Day! The pats will still get my support I hope they have good plans for next year. Go Pats Go!

To the negative posters on here ...... The product has been inconsistent this year but for the most part entertaining. The worst part is sitting at the Brandt Center and listening to the quietest, lowest energy fans in the league. Embarrassing to be called a hockey city. Take a trip to most other rinks and especially the US division rinks and you would know what being a real fan is. A little life in the stands might get the boys excited. Most would love to play in front of a different set of drones in the stands to be honest.

Wheat King Fan here...
When Brandon lost in Red Deer 10-0 awhile back, our blog was full of the same mad, angry, dismayed, fans that are on here.Fans are Fans!! When Kelly took over the BWK it took a few years to remove the culture of losing that was present. Look at the mid 80's through early 90's..wow they sucked!
You should give your new ownership group at least 3-4 years to turn this proud franchise around. I miss the days of all out war between these 2 great teams(late 70's-early 80's). Regina has a special place in my heart, and so do the Pats. I think the Leadership group and Staff you have now are going to lead you back to the top of the eastern conference.

Kelly doesn't have a Golden Horseshoe when it comes to Patrick, he has smarts. He talked your GM at the time to take a draft pick and Geordie McGuire off his hands to stay away from Patrick.

Not to mention, Patrick had let Regina and Prince George know that he was not interested in playing for either team and would likely not report. It's these type of recruiting issues that the Pats are already having less issues with.
