MURPHY QUASHES DURANT RUMOURS

It's understandable that the status of quarterback Darian Durant is the latest hot-button topic here in the Rider Nation whatwith Thursday's release of franchise greats Weston Dressler and John Chick.  I don't know where it started, but the internet has been ablaze with speculation that the Face of the Franchise's days with the Green & White may be numbered under the new Chris Jones regime.

However Roughriders Assistant V.P. of Player Personnel John Murphy snuffed out any of that talk on Monday's SportsCage on 620 CKRM.

"He's our starting quarterback.  That's his status," Murphy asserted via phone from Florida where the Riders staged a pair of free agent tryout camps over the weekend.  "For people to be ... I don't know, other than the fever pitch of how things have started or will continue, Darian Durant's our starting quarterback.

"The most important thing for us is that he's on a great path.  He's been between Toronto with his family and with his girlfriend and down in Atlanta rehabbing.  He's on a great course and he even thinks he's ahead of schedule.  At times we've had conversations about slowing down a little and making sure that he's delicate with the rehab.  There's no truth to any of the suggestions that Darian Durant's going to be doing anything other than playing quarterback for us this season."

Durant's 2015 season ended late in the first half of the Riders' Week 1 home loss to Winnipeg when he suffered a torn left achilles tendon.

The Roughriders will hold their third free agent tryout camp this Saturday in Mobile, Alabama.

Wonder if the $ saved from releasing Chick and Dressler will be used to replace the turnstiles the Riders placed in front of Durant the past couple years?

Durant is the starting QB ............. for now.

But when he does not agree to a base salary of $200,000. with bonuses that may make it possible to hit $500,000. with the rb and receivers he will have he stands no chance of getting there.

Why do I not like this regime already? They just feel like they're rent a bodies and don't understand what it means to be a Rider.

Also on your show. Bitching about losing the coin toss and not getting a chance with your offence.

I thought you said defence wins championships. Then say it like you mean it!

Whatever is best for the team and contributes to a winning product on the field.

I agree with one of the previous anons. Winning would be awesome but it will take a while to identify with a team with little to no recognizable faces. So goes the business!

Great news. Not that I believed any armchair DD hating GM wannabes. But this is good to shut them up. This is our leader.

Yeah, being a Rider means finishing with a losing record, no chance of playoffs and being the loveable losers of the CFL. Don't you guys know that?

Man the old boys club is getting annoying with their schtik.

Regina is fast becoming an impossible workplace. A few more tweets from the premier and the whole organization might implode and float down the Wascana.
Never try and change a losing culture that has developed over a century.

The three or four butt munches on this site who like to live in the past or in some fantasy world are despicable. These unsubstantiated posts are disgusting, If Durant comes back and plays poorly they will all be calling for his head. These are true know nothings who bitch if you keep players and bitch of you move players. There is no winning with these a__holes and unless they are 3-15 or 7-11 the are unhappy. Sad people with sad lives. There is also no winning with the team and they like it that way. This team was in serious decline because of previous mis-management and needed to be fixed. A few of these people just don't and never will get it,

If players bolt for other teams or the NFL then that's just fine. However if we don't re-sign them all of a sudden the small group of big mouths get on here and cry woe is me. They are fuelled by certain guys in the media, certain blogs looking for hits, and few out of touch with reality starry eyed fans. This Durant story was fuelled by the same people. They should be ashamed and disgusted with themselves but likely aren't. You need moral fibre first.

We've allowed this team to become an overpaid over the hill, home based fan club. There are some people in this town who like to spread baseless rumours and hysteria. They do it because they are terribly uneducated in cap management and don't like winning. A few have some agenda issues and are pissed that Reynolds had the stones to do what was right instead of convenient.

If DD comes back and isn't able to perform at the level he once did,, what should the team do? Sign him to a big expensive extension?. Ricky Ray, Henry Burris, Zack Collaros, Mike Rielly, Matt Dunnigan, Travis Lulay have all be moved in one way or another, so anyone can be including DD. It's the way of football and pro sports for that matter and some people should figure that out. Some of the people better get it through their heads that DD likely won't be here for ever. To them I say grow up and get real for a change.

Teams in the CFL are run with the sole purpose of trying to win championships, not be a source of autograph signers. Good teams are built from a number of good players who work together to win. They are not composed of three or four overpaid individuals and a bunch of slugs like we had in 2015. Current management is getting rid of the old guard before they decline too far, and the team is saddled with a bunch of cap issues. We've released players before for the same reasons as have other teams. Players do what's best for them and team management will do what's best for the team. Great teams have had to make great changes and we will too if we want to be great. 90% of the players contribute very little in the off season and live elsewhere. They have apartments during the season and go home in the off season. They rarely settle here after football. It's just a job and nothing more. It's time to enjoy the team and stop spreading manure.

DD is the starting QB,we need to work on protecting our QB's and giving up the least sacks in the league this season. Will DD start 18 games? I don't think so.

We will need to use the second string QB (who ever that might be)more than we may want.Protecting the QB's will be key.

All you need to bring the A$$ Holes out is mention DD on this blog.

No I'm pretty sure 3-15 makes you the laughing stock of the CFL.

Gundersons Yorkton.... Man you are so far off base with your comment it makes an informed person from Saskatchewan laugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Since 2007 the Riders have been to the Grey Cup 4 times and have won it twice. No other team can boast that same record. Montreal has other great records to boast about in that time frame.
With every Championship team there always comes restocking over the next year or two. Now we are gearing up for sustained success with Jones and Murphy.
Im thankful that Murphy took the time to snuff out all the stupid rumors.
So take your negative knowledgeable comments Gunderson and park them in Yorkton's Garbage dump. Thats were they belong.

The above comment is either from a Shmo fan from Edmonton or an imbecile that was let out of the sad, lonely and just plain stupid ward of the hospital.

A 3-15 season from the previous regime is the pride of the CFL?
What a fricken joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hysterical

Everything Jones and Murphy have done will improve this team. Having older Vets is great and I for one would have loved to keep Dress and Chick. Just not at $250K for a 33 year old D-end or a 31 year old Slot back. Plus what player deserves a bonus from last year? I didnt see 1 player step up and make a difference. Maybe if Foley would have been here he could have been a leader on a terrible team and possibly made a difference. But oh, wait a minute. He was traded for a concussion injury prone MLB that failed us miserably. Just one of some piss poor moves made by the last GM and HC.

Plus every defensive player let go was a major player in having the worst CFL Defensive record in every category available.

If Kent Austin can turn the Hamilton Tiger Cats upside down and change the entire team. Only to make it to back to back Grey Cups. Im sure a knowledgeable 2 person team like Jones and Murphy can easily do the same & better.

Enough already with spurned man love hating.

Jason Ficter from the riders Facebook page must be pouting over this. All he ever does is spew negative comments about Durant.

I wish we would have kept Dressler, or at least tried to with more effort if we assume Dressler's words are true (And I do).

But Taman killed this team with rich deals and regardless who was the new gm and coach we would have had to make tough decisions to field a competitive team.

LOL! Reg, I think you misunderstood my comments. The poster said that he didn't like the new regime that doesn't know what it means to be a Rider. Implying that we should have stuck with the status quo. I'm sticking up for Jones/Murphy there as I support their moves last week. Because I don't want any more 3-15 seasons and keeping veterans around just cause they're popular at the expense of doing the right thing.

We're not so different, you and I.

What DOES it mean to be a Rider? I don't think anybody knows.

It is the Saskatchewan way. I think people are satisfied being second rate. And as a province we have been for so long that we are scared of success. I have no allegiance to a single player on this team, if it means winning.

Rider fans, in part, wouldn't agree with that. They would be more content to have their favorites and be mediocre so they can have something to complain about and someone to blame.

We hang our hat on the Best Rider of The All in Ron Lancaster who was so great he brought us one championship. I think it is time for a readjustment in what we value!

Anonymous said...

With our new GM, coach, president and vp's we will be the most effective and envied team in the league. Its nice to have name players BUT I want to win and I don't care who's toes are stepped on

Anonymous said...

Shhhhh don't tell anyone but the Riders have a better record without Dressler than they do with him. Shhhhh!

Also, same as Brackenridge, Dressler should maybe chat with his agent about Riders trying to negotiate a contract. Dressler was just trying to get the fans on his side with his sappy letter.

John Chick ...... meh, Jones and Murphy could have him replaced in their sleep.

Both these guys are on the wrong side of 30 and have slowed down. Father time always wins! Undefeated!

Anonymous said...

Murphy isn't the coach, moron.

Anonymous said...

Constant micromanaging has killed the riders. Given their history it will not likely be fixed. Every cup winning coach this sorry organization has ever had has either left in frustration shortly after winning or has been run outta town. Maybe it's time to run the old boys club and the meddling farmers outta town. If not then don't expect Reynolds nor Jones and company to be here for long.

Anonymous said...

"Reginald in Regina" please go and read Rob Vanstone's December 29th Column in the LP. Then you can adjust your comments accordingly. You may be entitled to your opinion but your not entitled to your own facts. If after reading that article your aren't convinced how mediocre we've become, then nothing will and you're a lost cause.

I think every fan and even management would have loved to have Dressler and Chick back. However not at all costs. We need some better defensive players more than we need a 30+ receiver and d-lineman. If either player really wants to be here they can have their agent call the Riders to see if they can match what they're being offered elsewhere.

Jones turned a 4-14 team to Grey Cup Champs in two seasons. I think his resume is strong enough that he's earned the right to attempt to do it here. He shouldn't be seconded guessed by non-football people, and he should be allowed to do it by whatever means he deems necessary. He was a champion last season and we weren't.

Jason Fichter is quite happy about the news! He is and always has been a DD fan. He just believes they should bring in a 2nd proven QB for insurance. Like say Harris or Lulay. Jason must be a pretty popular guy. He runs the best Rider page out there. The All Rider Fan Page.

John Chick and Weston Dressler remain the hottest UFA in @cfl leading up to opening of free agency on Feb. 9. Multiple teams talking to both

Jones and Murphy are so stupid !!!!!

gary lawless ‏@garylawless 3h3 hours ago

told @Wpg_BlueBombers and @calstampeders have inquired on Dressler. He has received offers. Peg, @Ticats and @MTLAlouettes talking to Chick

Fire Jones and Murphy and keep Chick and Dressler would be a much smarter move !!!!!

Anonymous said...

Who cares? If other teams are willing to stupidly throw $200000+ at two players on the wrong side of 30, let them. Their rosters will lack depth, and when the injuries come, where will they be? In the same place the Riders were in 2015.

Bigger, younger, faster and with more depth will lead to a much better 2016 for the Riders, thanks to the work of Jones, O'Day, Murphy and Reynolds.

2016 will be laying the foundation for the dynasty to follow.

Shut your stupid mouth, sit back and enjoy the show.

Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has them, and we should never have to see the stupid ones in public.

Sorry to see Chick & Dressler go - that is the sh*tty part of the business, but it's done - people, get over it. Move on. Support the Team.

Glad to hear Murphy's comments about Doubles. The haters just need to get over it. Move on. Support the Team.

Well no kidding! But i guarantee it is nowhere close to the cake they were making before!

Guess what bud, Jones doesn't give a shit what you think. He's paid to win, not listen to couch coaches like you. If you're so smart, why didn't Reynolds pick you as GM?

Anonymous said...

If it can happen to Chick and Dressler, then why not DD? I'm not a Durant hater but is he worth his high salary any more than the other two were? Given that Dressler and Chick were both healthy I would say they were less of a gamble than DD at this point.
If the Riders don't win the Grey Cup this year, can we renegotiate Jones' contract???

Anon that wrote... "Reginald in Regina" please go and read Rob Vanstone's December 29th
You obviously did not read my comments. I said I like Chick and Dressler but not at the price they were signed for. I am 100% for Jones and Murphy! I like everything they have done and will continue to do.
So dont blast a guy thats on the same page you are.

I think DD is worth the money...for now. Why?

Our record without him starting is abysmal
Our team plays confidently in front of him at the helm – no question
The play of new quarterbacks around the league this year, after first start wins, has been losses as far as I can remember.

If there is one player worth the money to the franchise its Doubles. It's the toughest position to play and develop in the CFL. Darian has proven beyond doubt that he can win the big games. It's for that reason alone retention and support is warranted. His play against in 2013 playoffs was and is inspiring yet today. He'll do it himself if he has to...and why lose that?

He is likely paid commensurate with other Grey Cup winning quarterbacks and if that's the case, then it's fair market value.

Until a healthy Darian can NOT produce wins for the franchise he's a keeper. To suggest a different quarterback that hasn't done “it” is ludicrous. We have one right here.
