GIBSON BOLTS RAMS FOR ESKIMOS

REGINA, Sask. - The University of Regina Rams announced Sunday afternoon that Mike Gibson has resigned as head coach, effective January 31.

Gibson has accepted a position as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator for the Edmonton Eskimos.

"In his short time with the organization, Coach Gibson had a positive impact on our program in the areas of player recruitment, academic excellence, and strengthening the partnership with the University,” Rams president Dan Johnston said. “We thank Mike for his hard work and wish him and his family the best in the future.”

Gibson returns to the Canadian Football League after one season as the head coach of the Rams. Edmonton will be his sixth CFL stop, as he’s also held positions with Winnipeg, Saskatchewan, Hamilton, Calgary, and Ottawa.

"I’m incredibly disappointed to see Mike go, but this is a wonderful opportunity for him and his family,” said Curtis Atkinson, acting athletics director for the U of R. “I have great respect for the job he’s done here in a short period of time and believe he had a profound impact on our student-athletes and the institution. Mike has an outstanding work ethic, passion for the game, and he does things the right way. He’ll be missed.”

national search will begin immediately for Gibson’s replacement.

Probably for the best. 0-10? C'mon man!

Too late to bring in Dyce?

The Rams will be the Rams until they hire a CIS Head Coach the ilk of Blake Nill. Someone who has built and won before and someone who has extensive connection at the CIS level. It goes without saying that guys like Nill win championships and another again in one year after he left Calgary. Until they they can persuade someone like that to come here, it will be the same thing year after year at the U of R.

I think Luc Mullinder would be a good fit.

Who cares.

Wow. Can't believe how low the Eskimos sunk.
Yikes!

Mike is going to the 2015 Grey Cup Champs and a good bet to win the Grey Cup again in 2016

Will the Rams be receiving any monetary compensation due to the smoes tampering with a head coach under contract?

Chris Jones comes to Regina, Mike Gibson goes to Edmonton.

Regina wins this hands down.

No loserville there's no tampering unlike the lowly sliders talking to traitor Jones the week of the Grey Cup ,the whiners and their fans have absolutely zero class in doing that, the news always has to involve the low life sliders and their classless fans. When really nobody outside of the province cares shit about the worst team in the CFL ,but thanks to the sliders the Eskimos are stronger with their new coaching staff.Thank -you loserville.from all Grey Cup Champion Eskies fans.

Real good friends with a current Ram. He is let's just say ecstatic with this news. Last season was a complete and total disaster under this clown.

Can't help but think the U of R has shot themselves in the foot after tearing apart the old Coaching Staff. Would be interesting to see someone like Luc Mullinder or Mark Muller take over but are they really qualified to do so? I was surprised when Gibson was chosen.

Good riddance, Edmonton has lost this swap by a million tides

Anyone who has ever been to a game at Commonwealth knows what a bunch of low life, unclassy, worthless white trash pieces of human garbage Moes fans are.
Go back to waiting for your next EI cheque while you watch the repo men take your highly financed possessions away. I hope your daughters and sons make enough working on the street tonight to feed you all tomorrow.

We get a GC winning HC, you get a guy who can't win a single game in CIS. Only idiot hypocrites would celebrate this.

Great news!!!! Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. Good luck Eski dim rods...hahaha

Good time for the Rams to do a thorough search and bring in a strong leader & build the program from the ground up to be able to recruit and compete on a yearly basis.

You have to wonder if the U of R was consulted very early in the process and were very happy to rid themselves of a mistake they made, and that maybe all the compensation that is needed.

As a Huskies football fan, I would gladly send you Head Coach Brian Towriss, DC Ed Carleton and Athletic Director Basil Houghton as a bonus. The Huskies have not won a playoff game in eight years.
These three individuals are not committed to winning, and have a right of entitlement, as they know the U of S will never fire them.
Do you think that Huskies football fans who want more for these young men, could borrow Craig Reynolds for about 15 minutes ? This is about how long it would take to fire these washed up coaches and directors. I will even come down to the stadium and help clean out their belongings if he needs a hand.
How does the Huskies alumini tolerate this losing cultre?
Would anyone else like to see this losing head coach,Defensive coordinator and athletic director fired?

Nice way to bail on your kids in the middle of recruiting Gibson. You have embarassed the Rams and those who hired you should be accountable. Isn't that right Mr. Johnston?

Anonymous said...

I hear there is this guy who is getting payed by the Riders who might want a head coaching gig! Can the Riders force him to coach the Rams or not get payed ! Hmmm

Walter said...

I totally agree with Red. As long as the Huskies organization hang on to Towriss, Carelton and Houghton they will go no where. A losing
organization with loser coaches with no winning attitude. Take a
look at the Hilltops - winning organization with a coach who has
a winning attitude........

I love the finger pointing!! Stuff happens that nobody can predict. As for Gibson, it speared he was on the right track but definitely let an awful lot of young men and others down by leaving so soon. So much for "I will to finis my career . The The of r". I I pile o cr.

If you think Bomber (Ed Carleton) doesn't care about winning you haven't played for the huskies... Oh wait you probably haven't Red.... Haha

Anonymous said...

Agree anonymous, good riddance, he has embarassed the Rams

Pretty disappointing for the program to hire someone they thought would be there for a while.

As for the Huskies Red, Towriss' only fault was to put all his faith in Drew Burko.

Now that Siemens is at the helm I think we'll see a playoff victory in 2016.

You also can't scoff at that team ALWAYS making the playoffs. Flory as OC has made a big difference as well. They almost knocked off Calgary in the 1st round last year. I expect big things.

Red has said out loud what so many of us Huskies fans have been whispering to each other for years.

GWil26 said...

The amount of pressure BT faces to force local kids into early starting roles due to boosters is ridiculous. Siemens will be a welcome change, it will be interesting to see what Calgary does without Buckley.

This is more about what Gibson found out about the school, alumni, and the treachery of some behind the scenes. There are too many who like the status quo, and that's what they're shooting for no doubt..and what they will end up with.

Red said...

Boosters?? I think you have been watching to much Friday Night Lights. Now you are going to tell people that Buddy Garridy is going to want to install a jumbo tron at the stadium.
Most coaches would dream of having a veteran QB, but once again Towriss cant get the best out of his players.
In typical Saskatchewan fashion everyone is making excuses for Towriss,Carleton and Basil.
Wake up people!
This team has not won a playoff game in 8 YEARS!!! And they barely made the playoffs this year. These young men have 4-5 years left in their football career, they want a Vanier ring. Not excuses, "good effort" "we will get them next year", 5th year players dont have next year.
As far as recruits go, if you are deciding on which school you want to go, where would you go ? U of C, UBC with Blake Nill or a team that hasn't won a playoff game in 8 YEARS- its a no brainer.
Wake up Alumni!!! your program is going down the tubes
Brian "Marvin Lewis" Towriss is past his due date, as well as Carleton, and Basil.
They ned to be fired.

Anonymous said...

Sure shut him up, huh!? Lol!!!

This isn't about the lowly huskies or the wanna be CFL franchise sasklostagain roughsliders it's about a guy going to coach the o-line of the flagship franchise in the CFL THE Edmonton Eskimos 2015/2016 Grey Cup CHAMPS

GWil26 said...

What do you think Dube is Red? I don't know what you wanna call it but a guy who's in the locker room with you after you lose the vanier sure has some inside leverage... Haha. I never said BT is the right fit anymore what I said is that Carleton certainly isn't happy or ever has been happy with mediocrity. I assure you I have more experience with them than you do haha.

GWil26 said...

Also I made a distinct decision to not play for Nill, if you ever met him or spoke to some players who have played for him you'd understand why. Nill is successful because the questionable tactics he uses everywhere he goes not because he's a great recruiter haha.

Red said...

You made a big mistake sonny you should have played for Nill. You would have been in a winning program and been in the winners locker room instead of being in the losers time and time again.
Who in their right mind would pick Brian "Marvin Lewis" Towriss?
Players hated Lombardi but he won. People hated Don Matthews but he won. Winning creates short memories. You should have focused on winning instead of having someone give you a hug.
Plain and simple Brian "Marvin Lewis " Towriss and Ed "Ritchie Hall " Carleton need to be fired they are not committed to winning.
8 YEARS WITHOUT A PLAYOFF WIN.
Here end of the lesson young grasshopper.

Their is a God . Thank you maybe the Rams will be as lucky as Burris who would of been out of work if Mickey would of stayed. Definitely over his head. Just a line coach. Just a line coach. This job takes more than a fly by CFL coach . A man with integrity . What recruiting not one defensive lineman. Hello

Anonymous said...

Dear Mickey when you blame the players all the time and forget to look in the mirror you were destined to fail. UBC prime example coaching makes programs.

GWil26 said...

You don't know anything about Nill. We were a winning team when I was there... Gramps... Haha.

Red said...

I find it interesting that you were on a winning team but was in the losers locker room for a Vanier cup.
Which is it?
I don't know Nill and neither do you.
I do know he wins and Marvin loses
Say hi to Marvin and Ritchie the next time you see them.
You had better run along its past your bedtime.

GWil26 said...

I do know Nill... And how many Vaniers did Nill win in Calgary? Better yet we never lost to Nill when I was in the program. Dump enough money on a kid to make him transfer from Penn State or fudge a receivers grades and it's a lot easier to win. I'm happy for the players at UBC that won but the things Nill said to the players after they lost in Calgary his last game was a joke. Once again I may not think BT is the guy for Sask anymore but Bomber never coddled anyone that's for sure. I'm glad you know so much and since you keep cracking the young kid jokes maybe you should change your diaper and get your orderly to sponge bathe you and tuck you in.

Red said...

I still find it interesting that you were on a winning team and a team that lost a vanier. Seeing that Marvin and Ritchie haven't won a playoff game in 8 YEARS it's been a hell of long time since they have been to the Vanier. Maybe you can't tell the difference between winning and losing. Maybe the losing attitude that Marvin and Ritchie have has rubbed off on you.
Most unfortunate.
How is Blake doing anyway? Say hi for me the next time he is town to visit you.
Quite simple, Marvin Towriss and Ritchie Carleton have never been accountable for their poor performance because they know they have their jobs forever.
They both need to be fired.
Anyway it's way past my bedtime and my diaper is full.
Don't forget to put on clean pajamas and get your soother.
It's story time before bed.
Nighty night

GWil26 said...

You're such a sad old man eh? Haha. Fact is things have gotten worse because of the input of guys like Dube, should BT be manipulated by that? No he shouldn't. I have said many times I'm not supporting BT I don't know why you are so stuck on that? This is like a shitty scene from 50 First Dates... All I have said is while Carleton may not have been fired because they haven't been winning he also hasn't had anywhere near the defensive talent he needs to compete in today's CanWest... But hell you know more about it than me. Nil won last season that's great. But you talk like he had 4 VCs in Calgary haha. I'm happy for you Red you get to be a miserable old sap, I'm sure I'll get there one day.

Also winning a VC is damn hard and there isn't any teams left in the CIS as good as before.

Red - The Huskies won a playoff game in 2009. Still way too long without a win. I agree with you. Towiss, Carleton and the whole Huskie alumni country club coaching staff has to go.

GWil, the problem with Carleton isn't his desire to win, but his stubbornness to give up on schemes that other teams pick apart. Since you were playing safety, they haven't changed a bit. Same cloud coverage that has been picked appart by OCs for the past decade. Everyone knows they will see the completely ineffective monster defense on second and long - I'm sure they count on it by now.

I know a lot of people who aren't renewing their season tickets until this coaching staff is gone. A lot alumni don't want anything to do with BT and Carleton anymore. They have no pride and are going through the motions.

Rams fans should consider themselves lucky they got rid of their problem. At least they can rebuild now. We have to wait until Towriss, Houghton and the rest retire. Until then, we get to watch the slow decline continue while other programs pass us by (like UBC did last year.

GWil26 said...

I'll agree on the schemes issue. Look when you have DBs like Barker, Krahenbil, Shaw, Burrows and Metu etc those schemes worked great haha. Also having arguably the best front 7 in the country helped too. I worry about the recruiting side of things. I came from Alberta but it was almost as if BT didn't like looking outside the province much, although some of the best players ended up being from out of province in the end. I feel a bit better seeing guys like Chow and Greco coming into the fold but since you seem knowledgable on it and more reasonable I will agree with you haha.

Unknown are you alumni or a fan?

Hey GWil26,

I have just been directed to this thread so I'm sorry for digging up an old one but I must chime in. If you have never lost to Blake Nill at UofC you must have finished no later than 2008. So assuming you finished in 2008, congratulations you beat him in his first 2-3 years of a rebuild! Not a very tall task after he took over a team that hadn't been to the playoffs in 10 years.Even if you were around to beat UofC in 2008, you still BLEW it in the playoffs and had to watch as the Dinos won their first of 6 straight Hardy cups (a run never seen before in the CW). Yes he was unable to to bring a Vanier back to Calgary and that's unfortunate, but he was a part of a run never seen before in the West. As others mentioned I would much rather him on my team than having to play against him. Since 2009, I don't think the Huskies have beaten the Dinos once so I'd say all those players that chose Nill over Towriss are pretty happy about their choice.

It's interesting you, as a former Huskie player and current supporter, know what was said in the Dinos locker room in Nill's last game. Based on the time you were a Huskie and your knowledge of the Dinos locker room I'm going to bet you're close with former Huskie and current Dinos ST coach Taylor Altilio. I'm sure Dinos supporters like myself would be interested to know why Altilio is likely telling outsiders about what is going on in the Dinos locker room....

The Huskies have amazing facilities, great local support and a wealthy and willing alumni in Dube. There is absolutely no excuse for their performance over the last decade and Blake Nill played a hand in their decline as much as anyone. Towriss needs to go, along with Carelton and his terrible vanilla Cover 3 defense. All the players you mentioned above (Barker, Shaw, Metu, etc...) had something else you're forgetting... AGE. Most if not all were former Junior players playing against Calgary teams in 06-08 full of HS kids. The schemes were always an issue, it was age and experience that made up for it for the Huskies for so long with their constant influx of Junior players. Ever since the 5 in 7 rule has been put in the Huskies have fallen off the map. That shows a coaching staff that's unable to keep up with the times and until something is done about that they will continue to be behind the likes of Calgary, Manitoba and now UBC.
