DURANT SIGNS NEW DEAL

After having suffered season-ending injuries the last two years, Darian Durant took another hit for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Durant gave the Roughriders a discount when he signed a new one-year deal with the club Wednesday. He was scheduled to earn roughly $500,000 in 2016, the final year of a contact he signed after leading Saskatchewan to the 2013 Grey Cup.

Durant agreed to one season at less money to give new head coach/GM Chris Jones more cap flexibility following Saskatchewan's league-worst 3-15 record last season.

"Football is the ultimate team sport and I can't get it done by myself, no one can,'' Durant said. "The better personnel we can have around myself and the team the better our chances (for) success.''

Durant will reportedly earn about $450,000 this season. Jones wouldn't divulge financial figures but called Durant's pay cut ``significant.''

"I know it will help us be able to get another player,'' he said. "It's never a real comfortable thing to do, ask a guy to take a pay cut.

"But long-term success depends on being able to put together a very solid competitive roster and in order to do that you've got to be able to spread the wealth.''

Durant feels the new deal works for him as well.

"This gives me an opportunity to see the direction we're going,'' he said. "It just puts me in a position to control my own future.''

Jones said he's been talking to Durant about a new deal since December and even went to Atlanta - where Durant lives in the off-season - to discuss the matter face to face.

"It meant a lot,'' Durant said. "It helped me understand more about the direction he wanted to go in.

"Actually, I was kind of expecting it going into the off-season, we just had to make sure we were at a point where it made sense for both sides to renegotiate and it did. A lot of that had to do with that meeting I had with Chris Jones and him reassuring me I was his guy ...   at the end of the day it wasn't that tough a decision.''

Durant, who turns 34 in August, has suffered consecutive season-ending injuries. He suffered a torn tendon in his right elbow in September 2014 before rupturing his left Achilles tendon in Saskatchewan's '15 season opener.

Durant said he's recovering nicely from the Achilles injury.

"I'm pretty much doing everything I need to do (in training),'' he said. "I'm running straight ahead full speed.

"I'm still under control a little bit with some of my cuts and things like that but on my dropbacks, my rollouts, running, I'm full go.''

Durant, who played collegiately at the University of North Carolina, is third in Riders history in passing yards (24,668) and TDs (135). Jones said a healthy Durant is important this season for Saskatchewan.

"I've gone against Darian Durant a lot of years,'' said Jones, a former defensive co-ordinator with Montreal, Calgary and Toronto before leading Edmonton to a Grey Cup last season. "He's a very tough competitor and when he walks on the football team he makes everybody better.''

Durant's deal comes less than a week after slotback Weston Dressler and defensive lineman John Chick - both fan favourites in Regina - were released after failing to reach restructured deals.

"When you see something like that it puts the business side of things in perspective,'' Durant said. "All of us who choose to play this game, it's going to happen to us one day when we get that call ... it's the unfortunate side of the business.

"I'm going to miss Dress, he's one of my best friends. We shared some good times together and it's going to be tough but I know he's going to land in a good spot, be in a good situation because he's still a great player.''

Durant has spent his entire 10-year CFL career with Saskatchewan and has been the starter since 2009. He's led the Riders to the Grey Cup three times (2009-10, 2013) winning on the third try to give the franchise its first championship on home soil.

Durant was also Saskatchewan's third quarterback when it won the '07 Grey Cup.

Last season Ottawa's Henry Burris, the CFL's outstanding player, was the lone quarterback to start all 18 regular-season games. So finding adequate backups to Durant is also important to Jones.

"We're on a pretty quick plan to make sure we've got a No. 2 and No. 3 in place,'' he said.

Best of both worlds. Keep DD and free up cap space. This is true leadership by both sides. Jones for getting it done and Durant for being a team guy and accepting new terms.

Great news !!!!!

Now all that has to be done is to get rid of Jones and Murphy and get some one in that can be actually called a human being and not idiots.

Never liked Jones when he was with EE and like him even less now.

Here come the idiots, a few positive comments now these guys. Oh well Roddy keeps the dollars coming for hits, that's all that matters

I like the idiot who is still bringing up Hopson and the other guy calling Durant an "average" QB. Those two probably ride around in a van that looks like dog with big ears on the side of it.

Great work by Durant and Management to get this done. Maybe Jones just may know what he's doing contrary to what some people think. Great job by all

Durant says he doesn't plan on testing free agency but he gets to see the direction and control his future. #riders

Basecally he wants to be able to get out if Jones and Murphy conyinue to be the jerks they have shown themselves to be so far. He wants to play for good people which Jones and Murphy are not.

Time for the trolls, haters, idiots, and morons to crawl back under the bridge where they belong. To the the three or four that come and post the crap they do; you're PATHETIC! DD is the face of the franchise and not either Dressler or Chick. He stayed when they left. He wants to win again and wants to stay here, He signed here. Hopefully for a good many years like Hank has done.

Without DD, we had nothing. We can live without the others but we needed him. The same pukes that were bemoaning the other two as great are the same ones that will call DD mediocre and disposable. Yet if they had failed to sign him, they would have been on here screaming with venom and anger. These people are mostly stupid old farts who have no relevance in the world anymore.

Had Dressler and Chick shown the same "Real Class" they would have worked with the team like DD chose to do. He sacrificed a lot money for the team good, and showed he loved the Province and team. It wasn't all about him but about winning and really wanting to be here. A classy move by the face of the franchise.

Great news so now if the "lunatic fringe" would take a step back from the cliff edge. No....wait. On second thought please take 3 steps forward. You all are getting real annoying.

Yeah Jones is such a jerk, he drove the three hours to Atlanta to meet with Doubles personally to discuss the new deal.

Honestly I think Rod puts these comments on here himself just to fire up the masses. He is kind of a pro wrestling villain after all.

Really? Last I checked we are 5-20 without Durant and he's won waaaay more inches career than lost. He's 6-3 in playoff games.

Do you know Jones and Murphy are not good people? Have you met them? If they were not good people, why did the entire Wskimo coaching staff come here? They must like working for someone whose not good people.

DD has a renewed contract and guarrenteed income for a year. The riders own the contract. To all the idiots who speak of love and loyalty this is business and not dog ownership. The riders may or may not have rights to trade, sell, or drop the services offered. The best business practice may be to trade the services after a few quick wins for offensive linemen, dbs, Canadian depth, or dlineman. This DD love is the same idiotic logic that spewed stupidity over the release of Chick and Dressler. Service contracts should always be in the best interest of the team and all options should be open. Wins are more important than personalities.

Won't happen. The old boys club will stick a knife in Jones/Murphy's back every chance they get. Especially after Murphy humiliated them by saying 2010-15 was a failure. They're probably trying to kick Rod out of the group since he's developed a friendship with Murphy and allows him on the SC.

Very clearly Jones likes DD and the feeling is mutual. The GM drives from Tennessee to Atlanta to see him and that shows his class and commitment to DD. Great signing of great player. It must irk DD that the other two guys wouldn't have done the same thing for the betterment of the club. Jones was honest saying that it now allows for the signing of an extra player, and heaven knows we need more than a couple. Jones team operated without Dressler or Chick last year, and I think they will be OK again this year.

Great day! There will be new talent on the team and a few more real good free agents. Fixing the terrible 3-15 season is well underway.

The low-lifes who spew hate this or hate that can wallow in their own self pity. Every time you point a finger there are three punting back. You likely hate your own pathetic lives just as much. You certainly know what we think of you! Get back under the bridge troll, the train is coming.

I keep reading on here "the old boy's club". What is it you are talking about. Is it someone older than a certain age like 40? Is it someone who has some type of connection to the club? Long time season ticket holders? What are some of you referring to?

Really what else was Durant supposed to do, he was coming off a stretch where be basically hasn't played for a year and a half, if the Riders were to release him he wasn't going anywhere without taking a hit in his salary, and the quarterback situation everywhere except Saskatchewan he would have to be in a battle for. Don't give me the loyalty cramp for this move, he really had no other choice, and if he plays well and injury free he moves on for more money, its as simple as that.

I am impressed by Darian. I haven't always been his biggest fan in the past but this move really speaks to his leadership and desire to win. He is going to finish his career as the all time 'rider quarterback, even surpassing Ronnie. Not many of us would be so willing to discuss a pay cut (albeit, not many make as much as DD).

Lets see, the old boys club reference has to include Rob Vanstone, John Lynch and his coffee buddies, Daryl Davis, Marshall Hamilton, Carm Carteri, Paul Hill, Fred Wagman, Blair Finch, Roger Aldag, George Reed, Warren Woods, Mitchell Blair, Dan Rasovich, Elmer Johannsen, Russ Barr, and of course, Tom Sheppard. Did I miss anyone?

Is the person who keeps whining about this old boys club know any old girls he/she wants to organize to take over?

Anonymous said...

Gordo;

You can take George Reed and Darrell Davis off that list neither one is scared to state what's wrong with the outfit and you forgot the kingpin, HOPKINS. You know, the guy that extended Taman in spite of the backloaded contracts.

Anonymous said...

For the team? Classy? Loyalty? This was an easy pay cut to neg. Take the cut or last years Turnstyle offensive line that will end your career in one or two games. The money saved will allow Darian to play in 2017 for more than the pay cut. Not a difficult decision.

Anonymous said...

Jones did not want Dressler or Chick to be a part of his team and now they are not. He did still want DD and now he is. The commentor that said that Dressler and Chick had no class because they did not agree to a pay cut has no idea what they are talking about. They don't know how hard Jones and company tried or did not try and what kind of a pay cut they wanted. Glad that DD will be here for 2016 and I suspect if he does well, he'll be here longer than that. People seem to think that because we signed Jones as the new HC, that it automatically gives us a Grey Cup. I expect that we will do better than the 3 win season but not sure "Grey Cup" better. We are going to have a team full of individuals who have never played together. It will take a while for some team chemistry to happen. Hopefully I am wrong but I am not too excited right now.

Anonymous said...

You forgot Jim Hopson, Al Ford, Brendan Taman and of course Hollywood himself, Rod Pedersen!

To the gentlemen with 54 years of season seats, you've had to watch a lot of crappy football thanks to these people. Thankfully they're not in control of this team anymore. And it pisses them off greatly.

Yea, what team in their right mind would sign a GM to an extension immediately after winning a Grey Cup - on home field no less. What was Hopson thinking!!

Anonymous said...

"He's our starting quarterback. That's his status," Murphy asserted via phone from Florida where the Riders staged a pair of free agent tryout camps over the weekend. "For people to be ... I don't know, other than the fever pitch of how things have started or will continue, Darian Durant's our starting quarterback."

He's only here on a one year contract and only the QB of choice as they had no other in line yet. If he would have balked we know where he would be. Go ahead and ask doubles what he thinks of Dressler and Chick and their decision, he will tell you they did what they had to, to do what was best for them. Time will tell for all you Chick & Dressler haters.

It's no secret that Hopson lobbied the media for years to pump his tires and make him seem like more of a hero than he was. Even recently he was hard after them to promote JO for the GM's job so he would still have a voice in the team. But Jones got hired instead and Hopson's shut out. Him and Reynolds are no longer on speaking terms, he feels he got stabbed in the back.

And the team as well as us fans are better off for it. Thanks Reynolds!

I take it that comment was meant sarcastically but just in case, Hopson should have been aware of the skullduggery called backloaded contracts. He also should have known the whole deal would implode and signed Taman short term not the big gift it was. It's still costing the Riders big time.

Anonymous said...

If Hopson is the brilliant football mind he says he is, why didn't he recognize that even though we won the Cup we had an old group with zero depth in the pipeline and no plan to improve? He loves taking credit for the success and I'll give him that but he sure doesn't own up to the failures. Murphy is right, if you look at the last five years under Taman, other than the Cup we haven't been very successful. That's directly on Hopson. Wayne Shaw even confronted Hopson on that question and got a bunch of hot air. That's disrespect to a great Rider.

Yup, Hoppy is livid. He was always sticking his 2cents in when he wasn't asked for it. Now that he is shut out he isn't happy. I could see him being the one bashing the new direction this team is taking on all the blogs and forums. He should have just rode off into the sunset.

Durent only took a $50,000 paycut, still earning $450,000.....and earned a cool $1 million over the past 2 yrs for basically doing nothing..he's still earning almost 10% of the team's salary cap....A better deal for the injury prone dude would have been to give him a contract for $150,000 - $200,000 and then a bonus for every game he plays.....to make sure he earns his keep.....

Anonymous said...

Per year money isn't everything in football. If this can ensure that Durant gets a better team around him, it could prevent another injury, or help him excel.

Anonymous said...

To Darian Durant,

If you have got this far down into the comments section, very clearly you have already read too much.

Please please please; please stay away from the comments section and various other local football sports media in Saskatchewan, as it will surely distract you from the business at hand. All you really need to know is that 99% of the fans know you, love and respect you. As for the other 1 per cent, they routinely write most the disrespectful comments anyway, no matter what any person has accomplished or how good they are (they are the 'haters' and, generally, even hate themselves).

Keep positive, stay focused, come out on game day and please only hear the 99% percent fans that are cheering for you very loudly... then go for it! Bring home those wins - bring back the cup!

All the best from the Left Coast, Go Riders!!!

The dismantling of a 3-15 team is under way with a thud. Some for whatever reasons don't want to move forward, and are content living in the past. even there's not much future there. Did some think the new management was going to come in and leave the status quo? That would be pointless and we would be a similar team as 2015. There was a ton of work to be done here and it extended past DD. They knew they wanted him back and he chose to put the team first and that makes him a winner in most peoples books.

What guys in the LP conveniently forgot to mention was that Chick was the "highest paid defensive player" in the entire league. Dressler was in the top three for receivers. No disrespect to either but their play last year on the field didn't warrant the compensation they were seeking. Not only did Jones do what he had to, he did the right thing.

These guys could follow DD's leadership and reconsider their positions without the ego. Perhaps at least one of them might have a change of heart and consider re-signing.

They needed a star QB as it's the first step to a great season. Jones and staff are well on the road to a nice reconstruction. I think we will see some real nice additions as soon as they can start signing FA's. We will have a good offence and a great defence. We all know it's about defence in the post season. Men who are running a team as it should be. Stop the feast or famine cycle like before.
