TSN: RIDERS TO ANNOUNCE CHRIS JONES AS HC/GM

TSN Edmonton reporter Ryan Rishaug broke the news on Sunday that the Saskatchewan Roughriders have hired Chris Jones as the club's new General Manager and Head Coach.

TSN CFL Insider Lawless reports the news will be made official at a news conference on Monday in Regina.

**The Saskatchewan Roughriders have called a media conference for today, Monday, December 7th at 1:00pm. The media conference will be held in the Rider locker room at Mosaic Stadium.**

From Arash Madani/Sportsnet.ca:

Chris Jones, who turned the 4-14 Eskimos into Grey Cup champions in only two years, will be the next general manager and head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Jones interviewed with the Riders on Friday and accepted the job Sunday. While rumours had been rampant that Saskatchewan had interest in Jones’s services, they were not granted permission to speak to him until Tuesday, some 48 hours after the Esks won their first CFL title in a decade.

Jones will have full control of the football operations department in Saskatchewan with the dual title – which makes him one of the league’s top-paid executives. In Edmonton he had a considerable say in personnel, and “found” many of the American players in his free agent camps that became CFL stars, but he still reported to Eskimos general manager Ed Hervey.

The news of the Jones hiring was first reported by Edmonton's Ryan Rishaug.

It was Jones who discovered talents such as rookie of the year Derel Walker, quarterback James Franklin, linebacker Dexter McCoil and the inimitable Odell Willis, to name a few.

Two years ago, any organization could have had Jones, who before being hired in Edmonton had never been a head coach in the CFL. While he had interest in becoming one, and previously interviewed for openings, there appeared to be a concern among owners and team presidents that his brash, no-nonsense demeanour would not be the right fit. Ironically, it’s that approach that makes so many of his players fondly of how he operates.

Jones routinely had the top defenses in the league while he was a coordinator, and he has now won championships in each of his four CFL stops (Montreal, Calgary, Toronto and Edmonton).

On Grey Cup Sunday morning, Sportsnet reported that the four finalists for the Riders GM position were Jones, Jeremy O’Day (who held the interim role since January), Stampeders assistant GM John Murphy and Ottawa assistant GM Brock Sunderland. As Sportsnet first reported O’Day had his “formal” interview with Saskatchewan rookie president Craig Reynolds on Friday, and last week Sportsnet reported that Sunderland and Reynolds had spoken during the CFL playoffs.

The deal with Jones and the Riders moved quickly on Sunday. Sources said that as recently as Saturday night, the football club had n‎ot yet made a formal offer and that financial figures were not presented during the first interview.

Reynolds has previously said that O’Day will remain with the Roughriders organization in some capacity.

Jones recruited Craig Dickenson to be his special teams coordinator in Edmonton (the two had previously worked together in Calgary) when he got the job in November, 2013. It is believed Dickenson will follow Jones to Saskatchewan or join his brother, Dave, now the head coach of the Stampeders.

I GUESS THIS IS HOW THE NEW AGE OF MEDIA WORKS WITH A BUNCHA STORIES OUT THERE, WITHOUT ANYTHING FROM THE TEAM... WHILE IT WOULD PROBABLY BE A GOOD HIRE, I HOPE THEY ARE WRONG JUST SO THE DOLTS WHO PUSH THEIR HYPE THROUGH CAN FEEL THE BURN

Great move. I believe O'Day will be continuing as Assistant GM. It's a good day when you end up with both of your top candidates.

Thanks,
Dan

Anonymous said...

best case scenario is O'Day as assistant GM and maybe Craig Dickenson comes back?

Anonymous said...

Done deal and he'll likely bring all the coaches he brought into Edmonton with him.

Anonymous said...

yes I believe having both Jones and O'Day will satisfy almost everyone.

Anonymous said...

Ahh, what happened to the poll on this site? Still a few more days to vote on Jones or O'Day.

Anonymous said...

THANK YOU CRAIG REYNOLDS. I am renewing my season tickets tomorrow. Proud supporter here. Reynolds wants a winner just like the rest of us. Good Move.

Anonymous said...

Crappy choice - wait and see !!!!!
All you idiots will regret this choice and so will the RIDERS

Anonymous said...

Riders shaft O,Day - he deserves better than this from the Riders.

Anonymous said...

Did Darian give the Riders his approval?

Anonymous said...

Finally, someone with a legit football background. Can now come out of self imposed exile, resume being a Sask Roughriders football fan while putting my hard earned money where my mouth is in re-supporting the franchise. That last manager/head coach/president brutal. Thank you Mr Reynolds.

Anonymous said...

Reynolds, who has no previous hiring experience hired the sexy choice - what a bad call.

Jones is only in it for the money - no respect or commitment to the Riders.

2 years and he will be gone to the States - for more money and where he wants to be.

Riders will pay big time for this.

Anonymous said...

O,Dat will be a huge success as a GM with another team in no time - very sad day

Anonymous said...

Mrt-man...Go do your knitting and stay off of here if you don't like great Rider news. WE DON'T NEED YOUR KIND.

w said...

We all know how a big EGO fits in Riderville. This will not end well when things get ugly as they invariably do in Saskie.

Anonymous said...

Typical no class organization like the sliders to not even give Jones a week or two to enjoy his grey cup win ,the day after they win the cup the riders who are the worst team in CFL with the worst fans gotta interrupt him to buy his services get a life whiner nation

Anonymous said...

Tillman stocked Edmonton's cupboards. Not Jones. Bad move.

Anonymous said...

So the Riders got rid of the guy who wanted to be Chris Jones, to get the real Chris Jones.

Excellent

Anonymous said...

Why does O'day deserve better?? He gets paid well for what he does. It's not a right to get promoted. This is a busisness and in the sports business you can get fired at any moment. I would feel cheated as a season ticket holder if we didn't go out and get the best man for the job. Jeremy was being touted by Rod because he is best of friends with O'Day and Schultz. I don't want this team being runned on the basis of the old boys club...take a look at the Edmonton Oilers and see how well that works. Welcome to the Riders Chris!!!

Anonymous said...

Why does O'Day deserve better from the Riders? He gets a pay check that doesn't bounce every week for the work he does. This is a business and in this business you go out and get the best people for the job. Any player any coach and any GM can be fired at any moment. As a season ticket hold for 30 plus years I deserve the best players. coaches,

Anonymous said...

So...I thought all you know-it-alls said the "fix" was in, the interview process was a "sham" and Reynolds/Hopson would give the job to Jeremy O'Day.
Well, what do the blow hards say now.

Anonymous said...

Jones did not find any players. It was the GM and scouting staff that found them. Get real everyone. Jones has only been in charge for the last 2 years other than that he was assistant and made no decisions. He is getting the credit for others success. Hewill turn out to be another Chamberlain (spelling included)

Anonymous said...

Yahoo good move, again a happy rider fan

John said...

Where are all the posters who said the fix is in and O'Day would be next GM and the old boys club would make sure of this? Likely O'Day will stay on as assistant GM and will only be in that position for one to two years and someone will hire him away

Anonymous said...

Thanks for your opinion Hopson. Now go away. Reynolds/Jones are in charge and you're not.

Anonymous said...

Why is it a crappy choice and why do the Riders owe O'Day? For what? I really wonder why there is a portion of this fan base who truly believes people are owed things. If we had made the playoffs this season and not been the worst team in the league then maybe O'Day would be owed the job.

Anonymous said...

Finally Mr Jones will understand what losing is all about.

Anonymous said...

Very poor planning on your part, Rod, to be going down to Florida when you knew this was a strong possibility. Now you miss Jones being introduced and not there to report it. As the voice of the Riders, I think this is a crime shame and bad reflection on you as their media personnel. They will not be happy about you not being there and this could put you in jeopardy.

Anonymous said...

And a guy with contacts ....

Anonymous said...

Thank you Craig Reynolds.

Anonymous said...

That should be a good fit. The Roughriders and Eskimos are the only two teams in the CFL that won their last game of 2015. Yuk, Yuk.

Anonymous said...

WOOHOO!!!

Anonymous said...

it's beginning to look a lot like "Chris(tmas)"!

Anonymous said...

Were the Riders so desperate to hire Jones as Head Coach that they gave him total control as GM also, even though he has no experience as a GM. I thought the problem with Chamblin was that he got too much control. Can't wait to see how this plays out.

Anonymous said...

WHY DOES THIS ONE COMMENTER ON HERE CONSTANTLY TYPE IN CAPS.

TAKE IT OFF OF CAPS LOCK DUDE!!

Anonymous said...

Rod, what do you have again a Jones? Oh right you can't separate friendship with Jeremy. Everyone knows this was the right move.

Anonymous said...

@mrt_man why are you so bitter? Either you work for the Riders or you are a member of the Sask media that's incapable of breaking a story about the Riders. It's pretty pathetic that breaking news on our team has to come from outside the province! That speaks to the level of intimidation the Riders hold over local media. It's ridiculous! Meanwhile Welcome Chris Jones! You have made my year!!!

Dion said...

This is the perfect example why riders are the most classless team with worst team in team sports when the can't even let a guy enjoy a Grey Cup victory with family and his team before jumping all over the guy giving him outrageous money to come here because nobody would come here without being over paid .Here is hoping riders rot in the basement for years to come right where they belong with their fans

Anonymous said...

An early Christmas present!!

Anonymous said...

Did you guys see Cory Chamblin on the Steelers sidelines with Tomlin last night, wearing the Steelers touque? Maybe the Riders don't have to pay him anymore then.

Anonymous said...

These comments are hilarious. All these turkeys who are entitled to their entitlements think that JO was entitled to the GM's job and are now incredibly pissed. Guess what guys, JO and yourselves are entitled to NOTHING. Reynolds has the authority to make this decision and he did, not you. He went against the old boys club way of thinking around this province and good on him for not bowing to the pressure to hire JO just because. If you feel that strongly about it, cancel your season seats. I and many other supporters will be glad to take the seat upgrade in February.

Chris Jones must be stoked to head for greener pastures. More money, more responsibility and he gets to work for the greatest franchise in professional sports!

Very poor planning on your part, Rod, to be going down to Florida when you knew this was a strong possibility. Now you miss Jones being introduced and not there to report it.

Who the hell is this guy? Seriously!!! It's none of your business what Rod does on his off days. If this board weren't a source of income for him, I don't know why he'd put up with the abuse he takes on here. I don't always agree w Rod but he deserves more respect than this. Rod's lucky he respects YOU enough to let a post like this stand on his own blog! Ridiculous!! Enjoy your holiday Rod. The clown show will be here when you return!

Anonymous said...

Congrats Chris Jones!!!! This is the right hirer. Thank you Craig Reynolds. We will finally have someone who can recruit and evaluate talent, something the last GM and coach had no clue in.

Anonymous said...

Yes Rod books his holidays months in advance knowing the Riders are going to self-destruct and make a new hiring when he is gone.

The stupidity is once again commonplace on a blog which would be so much better without the dummy factor becoming involved.

To the guy who said not hiring O'Day means it is a 'sad day'. Why don't you put things into perspective: 14 innocent people got massacred in California last week, that is a 'sad day'! Not hiring O'Day is all about business and a game....

And to the idiots that say why couldn't the Riders allow Jones a few days to enjoy the Grey Cup win with is family...huh? Wow...unbelievable. Chill out and relax!

Rod's trip was planned months and months ago and, IIRC, involves a fan trip with commitments. It's not fair to suggest he's bailing. Besides, what of significance will happen between now and his return?

Last time I checked, technology allows him to communicate.

great hire.

Anonymous said...

Half way through 2015 the Riders fired an ego control freak now the Riders hire a bigger one. This could turn out bad

Anonymous said...

This is the right hire far and away even though some pathetic people are beefing about it. He has built championship defences everywhere he's been. What do we need most after last season? He has decades of scouting and recruiting experiences. What was one of the biggest weaknesses of the last GM? And finally Reynolds can hit the ground running since he doesn't need to do a search for coaching candidates. Really most of what's out there isn't too appealing. Maas maybe, and Steinhauer can't come due to his contract. Steinhauer's defence has Jones fingerprints all over it. After that it's the regular cast of suspects.

O'Day was likely the leading candidate until Jones fell into their lap. It would have been near impossible for Reynolds and the Board to ignore the obvious, as much as they may have wanted to. He must have interviewed very well and his success speaks for itself. He took over a 4-14 team so I would suggest there wan't that much talent there. He had a major say in what was brought in for him to coach. Those who are worried about longevity should crawl back under a rock since that's where they have been over the last 10 years. In the last 10 years we have had Barrett, Austin, Miller, Marshall, Miller, Chamblin, Dyce. How's longevity working for you? Get real.

O'Day is younger than Jones and no doubt will get to a GM's position in due course, considering history usually repeats itself. For now we could congratulate this hire and get behind it knowing our brass put the team ahead of politics.

Anonymous said...

Oh shut your cake hole. This trip was likely booked months in advance.

Anonymous said...

Ugh, some of these comments...smh! Bunch of grown children it seems. Great hire, I'm excited for the change and to see what Chris can bring to the Riders organization!

Anonymous said...

So the Riders hired another egomaniac to run the ship. Good luck.

Anonymous said...

Oh gosh, Jones has a huge ego. How horrible. Guess what, I'd rather have an asshole who wins than a nice guy that loses. Typical wee province thinking, we're too nice to hire someone who has even the slightest bit of ego. Same goes for the thought that O'Day should get the job cause he's been with the team for so long and deserves it. By that logic, we should have hired Ivan Gutfriend! He's been with the team the longest and put in his time and knows lots of people. Why the heck not? Reynolds knows full well that you can't let emotion get in the way of doing the right thing. He hired Jones cause he thinks he's the best for the job. Not years of service or whether someone deserves it or if they're a nice guy. Tough for some to accept but that's how it is.

Anonymous said...

So after reading all the comments, I'll try to summarize what's been said. This will either be a really good hire or a really bad hire. Wow! A province full of rocket scientists.

Anonymous said...

You're clueless. Jones is heavily involved in scouting.

John Moore said...

Jones is in it to win championships. That's what we want. Build a team that can win. That is what you pay good money for...results. This is perfect for O'Day....learn from the best and if he continues to be successful here in 2 or 3 years he will be gone south and O'Day will be more knowledgeble to step in. First class work Mr. reynolds thanks. Not so nice move by the self proclaimed voice of the Riders to be holidaying in Florida during the biggest news in Riderville in years leaving us to hear the news from Edmonton and Toronto TSN. Improvements needed in the communications department. We want more then the insulting billboards they put up close to other teams parks.Where were they sleeping to be scooped by
both Edmonton and Toronto!?

Anonymous said...

Only an Eskimo fan would be deluded enough to think that a CFL team is supposed to put their GM search on hold for two weeks in December so that the candidate can "enjoy his Grey Cup win."

What an utterly stupid thought.

Anonymous said...

Has ego, won't be here too long, O'Day deserves it,,,,,,,blah blah………..loser comments.

Ever see an interview with Bill Belichek….big ego…big results.

Chamblin didn't get fired for his ego, he got fired for winning two ball games over 12 months and going steadily downhill like (2-17) after 2013. If he was 12-6 this past season he would still be here. It's about results.

O'Day hasn't lost his job. He will get a chance to understudy with someone who has scouting/recruiting skills, builds defences, and will build more and better contacts. When the next opportunity arises he will be more experienced and better prepared.

I hope the commentators and media types who tied their wagons to O'Day understand it's about the Riders and not about a popularity contest. I imagine the Jake Brakes are coming on hard in some places. It's often tough to get one good person in place but we have two. The organization and fans should feel like they just won the lottery...

Welcome to Regina, Mr. Chris Jones. We are happy to have you and look forward to your work.

The whiners and complainers on this blog will always be whiners and complainers. They are negative people who can not seek happiness and enjoyment in life. If the Riders and that organization are that bad, then why are you whiners following. Go and praise your organization, cause you will never be happy in Riderville.

Makes me wonder why you would give Jones all this authority and then tell him who he has to hire as the assistant GM. Let him decide.

When O'Day got the assitant GM job did he compete for it or get appointed?

Post the assistant job and let him compete. Best man gets the job. That is how the real world works.

Cleary change was/is needed. If Jones is the guy back away and let him make the changes he want. Don't dictate who he has to hire.

As far as I can see Rod is the "Voice of the Riders". Never really viewed him as a reporter. An excellent blogger and he passes on the information I want to know. If he really wanted to ace these first announcements he wouldn't have taken vacation when he knew, and stated many times the team would announce by mid December.
Who really cares who said it first.
Thanks for the blog Rod, enjoy your trip and I'm very happy with the new hire of Jones, hope you are too.

hey "The Woz" way to come clean. Hopefully Rod, Luc and the rest of the O'day club come clean as well.

To the last poster, Jones WILL have his choice of assistant GM and it WILL likely be O'Day so shut your cakehole! O'Day knows the players and WILL work under Jones! Jones is not that dumb as to throw that away

Anonymous said...

Jones will have to win fairly quickly with the Riders, and with our broken O-line and D-backfield, even a fast mover like Jones will need a year or two.

If the wins don't come fast, it could get stormy around here. Some of the fans and media can be obsessive, 12 months per year, and Jones is an abrasive guy. And not in same manner as Roy Shivers, who was abrasive, but also enjoyed sparring with fans. Think more of Don Matthews – pretty aloof.

Another reason the wins would have to come fast: I'd imagine that by Labour Day 2017, he'll be thinking about other jobs. His track record would dictate that;
especially this last transaction (ready to jump ship hours after winning the Grey Cup as a Head Coach).

The general consensus is that Reynolds did what he had to. Now we'll see how it pans out.

Anonymous said...

Stupid is you think a) this is a holiday b) that rod pays for his trip
C) that this ain't nothing but business and yet a ego thing for Rod!!! Lol
