SCRUFFY'S THIS 'N THAT

The weekly assortment of thoughts running through my muddled mind and as always, they are in no particular order:

-- The University of Regina Rams begin the Canada West season and I'm excited.  It will look different seeing Mike Gibson on the field calling the shots instead of Frank McCrystal and I think I'm safe in saying the Rams won't be considered Vanier Cup contenders in Gibson's first year, but he has a solid group to work with and I'm looking forward to their season opener at Mosaic against the University of Alberta Golden Bears. You can go to the game, you can listen to the game on 620 CKRM with Michael Ball or you can stay home and watch it on Access 7 as I will have the play-by-play. I highly advise Option 1 or 2 in this scenario.  The game will also be televised back in Edmonton for those who have SHAW.  Its part of an expanded Canada West football package that will see the Hardy Cup broadcast on Global television along with one of the two semi-final games. This is great for the conference and for CIS football as a whole. I hope its the start of bigger and better things.

-- While the Rams do their thing Friday night, the Regina Thunder will go up to battle the Hilltops in an all-Saskatchewan PFC final and what really should be the first of 3 games between the two as they are head and shoulders the best in the league again this year and should meet in the final. I don't know about you, and maybe it is because one team has done better when it comes to wins and losses over the last couple of years, but for the first time, more people in this town it seems are talking Thunder than Rams. Yes, the Thunder gets a head-start on the Rams, but I am hearing more and more Thunder chatter this year and less and less Rams chatter.

-- Everyone else is doing it so I might as well too when it comes to the Saskatchewan Roughriders as they are taking a gamble and "rolling the Dyce" in the second half of the season which begins Sunday. I love what Dyce could bring to the table, but I hope a rabid fan-base isn't expecting any miracles out of the 48 year old. There is an excitement out there with the coaching change, but just because Bob is the head coach doesn't mean those guys on the injury list come back and it doesn't give the young players on the team more experience, but it may give them a different attitude and it may very well give them the chance Sunday night to talk about a win instead of a loss which I think all players want to do.

-- I was asked if Tino Sunseri was the worst quarterback the Riders have had since the end of the Ron Lancaster era this week. I couldn't say yes, but I couldn't remember anyone who might have been worse. He was the most frustrating quarterback I've ever seen in the green and white. THROW THE DAMN BALL!!!! By the way, there are a lot of bad quarterbacks that have worn green and white in the post Lancaster era.  Let's not forget the likes of Marvin Graves, Bernard Quarles, Jonathan Beasley, Keith Smith, Floyd Patterson and Seth Doege---although Doege didn't give us much of a sample size, but remember his debut against Calgary last year.

-- Has anyone checked on the fine people of Chamberlain to see how they are doing in the wake of this week's news from Riderville?

-- The L-P's Rob Vanstone makes a very great (R)observation.  The Riders do not employ a quarterback coach, yet they have a running back coach and the running back hardly runs the ball. I don't see a QB's coach being added this year, but I do next. Khari Jones value in the 2013 season mentoring Darian Durant was huge. Can anyone say Kevin Glenn?

-- We are now less than one week from the start of the NFL season. WOOHOO!!!

-- Congrats to all members of the 2015 class going into the Regina Sports Hall of Fame next month. Once the class had been named, I immediately e-mailed Vanstone and asked "the rumpled scribe" when and what it will take to get Principal Richard Pound (John Cozman) in the hall. He would be a tremendous addition and those who follow the independent wrestling circuit would agree. His schtick was outstanding and is still missed today.

-- The Regina Pats started the pre-season with a game against Calgary on Thursday night at the Co-Operators Centre. The start of the regular season is just a couple of weeks away and after a year last season where they re-captured the imagination of the hockey community, they have done absolutely nothing when it comes to an ad campaign for season tickets. Does anyone see a Pats logo anywhere around town outside Evraz Place? Fans aren't going to come into the building through word of mouth and while I don't know what the end results of this team is going to be, when you have the likes of Wapple, Zborovsky, Steel, Leschyshyn and Wagner doing their thing, it will be an entertaining product. You might want to promote it because the big flashy scoreboard is no longer a drawing card!

-- Sadly "Deflategate" is not over as the NFL was quick to appeal the lifting of Tom Brady's suspension. Will this stupid story ever end? Roger Goodell has embarrassed himself and the NFL with his witch-hunt in this case and it has to stop. I still think Brady knew exactly what was going on, but I also think he isn't the only guy to do this and it takes nothing away from what he has done in the past.

-- Connor MacDavid spoke with NHL.com this week as teams start getting ready for training camp which will begin soon. McDavid was asked if he has spoken to head coach Todd McLellan about expectations and what role is expected of him. His answer "That is getting a little ahead of the game. I haven't even been to training camp yet. I'm kind of taking it one step at a time. I just want to have a good training camp and prove to the staff and my teammates that I am a player who competes, works hard and does all the right stuff.  Connor, I think you will be just fine.

-- Finally, another tip of the hat to Rider Nation. Labour Day games are usually a big draw, but with the team at 0-9, it wouldn't have surprised me to hear there was no sellout this year and why would Winnipeggers want to travel to see that team. This team has been through a lot this year and the first half of the season certainly tore at the fabric that is Rider Nation, but once again they are coming through for what will be the 2nd last Labour Day game at the old Mosaic Stadium. With rain in the forecast, I hope everyone is in their seat at kickoff and it appears as if the Riders are going to have one of those card stunts to "BRING EM OUT".

-- Have a great Labour Day weekend everyone! GO RIDERS!

Hey Scruffy. Rod and Kelly got into it yesterday in a spirited debate on the Cage.

Rod thinks the Riders still have a chance at playoffs, and should continue to field a veteran team each week with playoffs a priority.

Remple thinks at 0-9 the playoffs are a long shot, so refocus on giving younger talent more reps, and start looking to the future.

What is YOUR opinion?

James

For the first time in my wildest of imaginations I actually agree with that waste of time Rempel. Playoffs are done, so years like this are hopefully are and few between so, build for the future so this never happens again.

Follow the Calagary or now more recently Hamilton model and build within, grow your own talent so everyone knows the systems, playbooks and culture and only trade to improve not to try and get wide sweeping wholesale changes in knee jerk reaction style.

Thunder and Hilltops are an undercard match. The main event this year for amateur football is the U of S Huskies.

Can't wait till the Riders are losing on Sunday and all those cards come cascading onto the field ...... lol

Great point on the Pats. I didn't even know there was a game in Regina last night until I heard it on CKRM. You wouldn't want to promote a tournament or anything. While I am glad to see the Pats under new ownership, they could learn a thing or two from the old ownership about marketing a team.

Anonymous said...

Mitchell Blair is the Tino Sunseri of Regina media. That I know for sure.

Anonymous said...

only in the joke CFL could you be 0-9 and still even talk about playoffs. lose 50% of your games? sure you can make the post season.

did anyone notice LULAY went down last night and their back up QB came in and wasn't dog shit. must just be a rider problem I guess.

every CFL "fan" is loving that "Canada's team" (self proclaimed) is on this streak. with the country club attitude from the first practice lets hope it all stays the same.

If you don't field the best lineup possible until you know you are mathematically eliminated, you are hurting yourself, your fanbase, everything. Remple just comes off as some blowhard who thinks he is always right when he is 90 percent of the time wrong.

Once your fate has been determined, throw in some of the younger guys and see what they can do, but the bottom line is YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!!

Any idiot can see that. Oh wait, Remple can't

RE: Thunder/Rams

It is a no brainer. Everyone is talking Thunder because the Rams have become irrevelant. Bryn Werrett has done a fantastic job with this football team and it is showing on and off the field.
As for the Rams, most of Regina's football community have found out over the past few months about the sleaze that has infested them. Frank didn't decide to step down and everyone knows that. Everyone also knows there were more qualified people than Mike Gibson, but the team's brass did no homework and went for what they felt was the glossiest resume. The current Rams are trying to distance themselves from the former Rams (isn't that right Marco Ricci who won't be in the broadcast booth tonight because he was told by the current executive not to return) and there are many former Rams in this town who are just fed up. As the Thunder roll on to what could be another Canadian bowl and the Rams go to a record of 1-7 or worse, the support factor will continue going to the Thunder. It is as easy as that.

To the comment regarding Beck's play last night as not being 'dog shit' in place of an injured Lulay and this issue being only a 'Rider problem'; open your god damn eyes and watch the game. The play of Kevin Glenn and Brett Smith has been far from 'dog shit'. Don't pin these losses on the play of our QB's; place it where it belongs. Short of the Edmonton game (Smith's first start) and Ottawa (Sunseri) the team has put points on the board. If the D could make a stop every once in a while the Riders could conceivably be 4 - 5.

That being said, you watch this team on Sunday. They will be unlike any team we have seen all year. I actually feel bad for Winnipeg; they are in for a LONG day. Riders by a boatload.

Well if the truth be known, the Tino SUnseri of Regina media is probably Jamie Nye, because he carries the same attitude and has the same level of talent. Example of this is the Jacques Chapdalain interview RP had on the show yesterday. Diamond Ferri last year and Chapdalain next. I am waiting for the day an "errant throw" takes him out while he is sitting on the sidelines.

HAHA, love the Sunseri = Blair comparison. Classic.

riders by a boatload!! HM put the crack pipe down, this is a classic example of rider fan on a power trip. we got the coach fired, we have the greatest offense in the history of the game and can beat anyone! you are 0-9, take the glasses off and sit back and see if anything changed before you are scoring boatloads of points.

about the Brady stuff, this was about deflated footballs. not beating a woman or child but air out of balls. not sure CFL guy should mention Brady, he is a real QB, playing real football winning real titles. he's no Brett smith but he is close. hahaha!

Anonymous said...

Agree with Remple 100%... Anyone here who actually believes that playing old tired veterans with a 0-9 team is just plain stupid. How dumb would you really have to be to actually believe there is still a chance?

Ok morons, look at it this way...

BC is 4-5. Riders are 0-9. The Riders must finish AHEAD of BC, they can not tie BC for a playoff spot. So even if BC shits the bad and goes 3-6 the rest of the way, does ANYONE with a football IQ of over 15 believe this lousy club will win 8 of 9 remaining games?????

OMG some people are REALY stupid.

Anonymous said...

Remple speaks the truth. He doesn't kiss ass like most hosts on that show do. Most of the clowns on this blog dismissing his opinions would never in a million years a) have the balls to say this smack to his face, and b) would NEVER be able to tackle the guy in a debate on football or hockey. He knows his shit, get over it!

I heard the show and Kelly never one single time said "The Riders should forfeit the remaining games" or "The Riders should try to lose from here on in". What he said is so painfully obvious. This team is going NOWHERE. So let's play the hell outta the younger guys, and try to put ourselves in a better position for our future.

Does that common sense approach really seem so difficult?

Ok, so let me get this straight. The Riders are 0-9, and people would rather continue to play old vets who clearly can not play at a high level anymore, as opposed to letting young guys play?

To the idiot who says "if you don't field the best team every week possible you hurt your team and fan base", all I can say is this...

I have been a season ticket holder for many years. I would rather lose with young guys making mistakes and getting better, than losing with old farts who are 2 years past their prime. We are not in a playoff race. We are 0-9. It is time to move on.

Anonymous said...

The Pat's new ownership group have done a lot of good things. Marketing does'nt appear to be a priority right now. They appear short sighted on developing future fans. Children 2 years and up now require a ticket,no youth pricing so you pay $25 or $12 to bring your future Pat's fan!

Ask yourself this question:

Would John Hufnagel or Kent Austin inherit a team with a record of 0-9, and stand pat with old veterans. Or would they begin a rebuilding process and strengthen the future?

I think that answer is obvious.

@DT,

A few things:

First off if I have an opinion that is contrary to Mr. Remple I will not only say it on the air, I'd gladly opine it to him right directly. The same would go for any said commentator on SportsCage.

If their reaction is to blow up the conversation is over, and if their reaction is to threaten or worse create a physical altercation they can go right ahead. Right after that ends I'd be calling the RPS and laying charges for threats or assault.

I don't worry about how people react. I state my opinion, they can state theirs and if there is disagreement over robust dialogue then best of British to them.

I called into Sportscage last night, and essentially stated that support for the Roughriders on my end will not be translating into financial when they put a mess on the field. I'm not paying premium price to sit through schlock. I did that when the tickets were a lot cheaper in the '90s and games were not on TV.

It's a competitive world with options. Guess I'm not a real fan like some of the other losers out there, but oh well. I won't worry about joining your little clubhouse.

Second off - Brendan Taman said Mike Tomlin called with condolences. That was nice. I was trying to think what the Pittsburgh Steelers did to assist while this organization was going 2-15 over the past couple of seasons.

I would rather lose with young guys ??? So should the Riders sit John Chick and Weston Dressler the rest of the way? Or just the 'old guys' you want to pick and choose from?

What people don't understand is, the Riders only have 10 young guys to choose from (see practice roster) and when you don't dress an alleged old guy he has to go somewhere? Maybe some of you geniuses can tell me where they should go?

Some of you idiots just need to think before you type, or just not type. Read and soak it in. And note above, I said MIGHT only need 6 wins, I didn't say you only need 6 wins. (stated that because I know some of you morons would jump all over it without reading it)

To the BC fan who liked John Beck's performance:

BC 2nd string QB John Beck has a couple of years in the CFL but is older than Darian Durant! In fact, no real youth movement in BC.

Riders are down to the third string but the good thing about the "Rider problem" is that our 3rd, 4th and 5th string are good young prospects.

With the BC win it basically seals the deal for any real chance at a play-off run for the Riders. They can now work on making Brett Smith an effective QB for the future and get Price and Sims some reps down the road a bit too, once they are more familiar with the system.

I believe the riders also have to finish ahead of Montreal to make the playoffs...i.e. the crossover!! Regardless of whether BC won or lost last night, at this point we still need to win a minimum of 5 games to make the playoffs. We need to finish ahead of BC, and possibly tied with Winnipeg and Montreal assuming we sweep Winnipeg. The next 10 weeks:

Montreal Plays – Winnipeg, SK, Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, Toronto, Edmonton, SK

BC Plays – Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, SK, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Hamilton, Toronto, Calgary

Winnipeg Plays – SK, SK, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, BC, Ottawa, Ottawa, Toronto

For Saskatchewan to make the playoffs with 5 wins, which may be possible, this is what needs to happen:
1) Montreal needs to beat Winnipeg then lose the rest of the games (5-13)...losing to Winnipeg is OK as long as we sweep Winnipeg and Winnipeg doesn't finish with more than 5 wins.
2) We need to sweep Winnipeg and then have Winnipeg beat BC then lose the rest (4-14 or 5-13).
3) BC needs to loss the rest of the their games (4-14)...if BC wins another game, we need 6 wins which is even more unlikely.
4) Riders need to sweep Winnipeg and beat BC and two more games (5-13)

Going to be an interesting 10 weeks.

Rick

In scenario 4, the two more games the riders need to win are against Montreal. Therefore, Riders need to sweep Winnipeg and Montreal and beat BC to have any chance.

And, to get in a crossover, the Riders will in all likeliness need to win 8 of 9 games. If you think that is going to happen, you are on CRACK.

The Pats ownership group is running the team like a lean business. They blew all their promotional money on the score clock. With a business forward model expect:
1. Increasing ticket prices and increasing concession prices with fewer choices and less product
2. Less service
3. Decreasing on ice product as business atmosphere is opposite to team building. Players will be looking after number one and be playing to get drafted.
4. Empty seats and a blame the fan catch 22 logic.
5. Team for sale despite protestations that we are here to win a memorial cup.
This is similar to how the province is being managed.

Sorry Rod like your comments most of the time but most are missing the point about Deflategate - Tom cheated and it did have an impact on football.

While Tom Brady won the case against the NFL and had his suspension overturned, most are missing the big picture that is so frankly pointed out in a summary of the ruling written below.

“doesn’t obstruct from the larger point: Tom Brady either tried to cheat, did cheat or covered up information about his attempts to cheat. It’s likely the first one happened, you can debate the second and the third is undeniable — even Brady’s lawyer said so.”

There you have it. Even his lawyer admits it………..regardless of whether he ever gets suspended, Tom Brady cheated (or at least tried to) and then undeniably tried to cover it up.

If you are wondering why I can’t let this die I believe the issue had a much bigger ramification on the 2014 season than the game where the issue came to light. So, over lunch I looked at the game stats to determine if it should be thought of as a big deal or not. Here is what I found.

Tom Brady completed 64.1 % of his passes last year ranking him 14th in completion percentage. If you look at the individual games he completed 66.1% of his passes at home and 63.08% on the road. At first glance, not too much of a difference. Then you look closer and see Brady only attempted 72.8% as many passes on the road than he did at home. If you estimate his away from home completion percentage over the same number throws he took at home, his completion percentage falls to 59.46% on the road which ranks him 39th right between Geno Smith and Blake Bortles. So if 59.46% is indicative of his actual work on the road using properly inflated balls and we give him the same relative improved percentage at home (3 points better or 62.44%), his overall rating now becomes 60.95% - better only than 1 team (Detroit) to make the playoffs this year.

So do the stats say is it probable he cheated – yes
Do the Pats make the playoffs without Tom cheating – only 8.3% of the time.
Do the Pats get overall home field advantage throughout the playoffs – let me put it this way. Detroit’s record was 11-5 and they finished as a wild card. No 11-5 team has ever finished with the best overall record in either Conference.

If Barry Bonds, who some see as the best player ever in the baseball, can be held out of the Hall of Fame because of his involvement in steroids – a performance enhancement; then Tom Brady should suffer the same embarrassment for deflating footballs – a performance enhancement that stats show it is very probable the at home under inflation of footballs did have an impact on the outcome of the 2014 season. He should be kept out of the Hall when his time comes and the same fate should befall his coach (Belicheck) as well for videotaping other teams practices.

New England Patriots championships should all be marked with an asterisk – they cheated and were caught (twice).

woz and Obama actually go way back. they are both dungeons and dragons masters. their feud goes back to the late 80's and it wasn't pretty. Obama rolled that 8 sided dice and destroyed Woz's dreams of world domination. however what remains the same is they both still live at home and neither of them has touched a live female. still livin the dream they tell each other every time they see each other at 7-11 when they are filling their big gulps for a night of intense gaming.
y'er welcome

JOEMAN if you think that Brady is the only one who may have altered the balls at home then you need to give your head a shake. the game in question, the colts game, his completion % was better after they changed the balls to the regulation ones. how very Saskatchewan of you to have the blinders on. there is zero proof or evidence that this has ever happened before this game, yet you have all this empirical evidence. tell you what take your findings to the league and see what happens. they will laugh at you like we all are right now. JOEMAN is an accountant I can guarantee that. stick to GST and tax returns

@ Gil Renard.....oops I meant Woz,

On Sunday I'll be in my nice house, staying warm/dry, and making a great chicken stew for supper. I'm also going to put a dent into the book I'm reading Harperisms. Then I'll watch the game on HD, and probably head to the gym.

You like Urban Dictionary. You're in there too. Woz you're under Bestfriend Whore - That's defined as that one person who refers to everyone as his "bestfriend".

.....I don't think you even have season tickets to be honest.

Prove it.

Anyway best of British to you.

Y'er Welcome

Obama, if you would truly voice your displeasure to one of the hosts to their face, why won't you come out and publicly state who you are then. You don't agree with what commenters put on here and put them down so say it to our face by stating your identity.

If you don't, you're just a hypocrite.

Never ever any football turmoil in Saskatoon.

Former players haven't pushed Towriss out and in Tom Sargeant we trust.

No drama mama!

GO TOPPERS!! GO HUSKIES!!!

yep, pretty sure it was 2010. i remember because i dressed for warmth and was frozen by the end of the game. i remember because I moved into a new apartment before the game.

exactly. people were calling for him to be fired, then he delivered a grey cup. i assume the same people will bitch and moan about oday when they make him permanent, which they will do by the way.

I'd rather have Scruffy calling a football game than Ballsy!

I'd love to have Remple sitting alongside Schultz and then try and spew that garbage he spewed yesterday. Remple would end up in a crumpled mess crying for Mommy!

WHen you line up, the bottom line is to win. This isn't junior hockey where everything is cyclical.

Hey Remple, did you just hear Schultz.

He just told you to STICK IT!! This isn't junior hockey, its professional football and there is a huge world of difference.

Joeman is such a moron. Any first year stats student could show your so called % and numbers are bogus. There is no way anyone can show a correlation between the passing % and the amount of air in the ball. It could just as easily have been because the grass was longer in Boston last year, or Brady doesn't get some from Giselle when he's on the road so his performance suffers.
Or any of a thousand other variables. The best part is you ramble on about how important it was to get home field in the playoffs, then when you point out stats that show teams are better at home, you conveniently ignore the home field advantage part and claim the ball inflation caused it....
I'm sure Brady liked the balls soft and team employees knew that and they made sure the balls were to his liking. But until someone proves no other qb did the same thing or other things with the balls, then it's a moot point.
The nfl needs to tighten up the rules around the balls, keep them secure, properly measured, etc. After that , then you can enforce it and call someone a cheater. Not until then.
And I'm not even a New England or Brady fan.

You are welcome.

And the stupidity continues. The IQ in Sask has to be in the low 50s.

Anyone who thinks 'Scruffy' is a better play by play guy than Ballsy is either Mitchell Blair himself or someone who has never actually heard Mitchell Blair on the radio and blindly dislikes Ballsy.

Mitchell Blair is to radio what Rosie O'Donnell is to lingerie modelling.

This Brady deflation business is getting tiresome. Everybody knows he did it, just like most other qb's do it. Difference is, when confronted he denied, he was confident his rep and all-American good looks would give him a free pass. Whatever heat he gets is deserved.
BTW, I hope he throws a few grand to the ball boys/trainers/whatever who got fired over his arrogance!

Hey! I'll have you know lately it's been running in the high 80's and even the 90's! It's quite seasonal, but before long we'll dip into the minus territory. That's when a lot of denizens start their annual migration to Arizona.

That was one of the most idiotic things I've ever read on this blog.

We are all dumber for having read your post.

I award you no points, and may god have mercy on your soul.

This is not a new policy - contact virtually any arena in Canada and they will tell you that tickets are required on a child's second birthday.

The Pats didn't even establish this policy, it is an Evraz Place policy for the facility.

Once again the personal attacks are here are just amazing.

If Remple has an opinion you disagree with, that is fine
If Rod has an opinion you disagree with, that is fine
If Scruffy has an opinion you disagree with, that is fine

Is there a need to belittle the three of them and others like Obama and Woz? Are you so pathetic and sad you think you are getting one over on them. Everyone single troller on here who posts anonymously or under a fake name is simply to me and many others the shit spatters on the toilet bowl that doesn't get flushed.

I'm guessing the guy who compares Scruffy's p x p to Rosie O'Donnell probably has a pic of Rosie in lingerie on his computer that he pulls one off too hoping Mom doesn't find out.

In the words of Rod, how Winnipegish of everyone.

Be better!

Mitchell Blair sucks. That is my opinion. Disagree if you want.

And don't just say 'if you don't like it, change the station. I like the station, just not Mitchell Blair.

And big Mitch takes runs at a lot of people on his blog and this column. He wrote a piece on (his opinion) the worst QBs in Rider history. If he can dish it out, he should be able to take it.
