EMJ MARKETING MONDAY MORNING GOALIE

OTTAWA -- It's officially a disaster.  Perhaps more than we even know.

With their season on life support, the Saskatchewan Roughriders came up with one of the most uninspired efforts in years Sunday in Ottawa which ultimately led to an embarrassing 35-13 defeat.

The Riders’ record dropped to 0-9 and virtually any hope that the season can be saved was lost.

Why?  Because no indication was given that this trainwreck of a season is anywhere close to being turned around.

The Riders won the coin toss at the outset of Sunday’s game but deferred to the second half which gave Ottawa the ball.  They promptly moved 82 yards in just five plays for a 7-0 lead before rookie Rider quarterback Brett Smith even got a chance to touch the ball.

You’ll hear a lot about Brett Smith coming up.

After a prompt two-and-out by the Rider offense in their opening series (which included the first of 10 RedBlacks sacks on the day), Ottawa then put together a 78-yard drive which culminated in another touchdown.  14-0 Ottawa before the game was eight minutes old.

Ready to play on defense?

Hardly.

But the game turned in the second quarter.  Both ways.  The Riders got on the board with rookie Naaman Roosevelt’s first career touchdown, a 9-yard pass from Brett Smith, 2:36 into the second quarter.  14-10 RedBlacks.

However seven minutes later an ill-advised Smith pass was intercepted in the Ottawa endzone.  He was given the hook.

That’s okay, we thought.  Back-up Tino Sunseri would get a look for a couple of series and then Smith would be back in there.

That, apparently, was the plan initially.

Sunseri’s first drive seemed successful enough until Rider kicker Paul McCallum clanked the upright on a 35-yard attempt late in the half for no points.

The teams went into the break with Ottawa still up 14-10.

Surely we’d see Brett Smith - the rookie gunslinger from Wyoming who’s gaining more and more Rider fans with every snap – in the second half, right?

Wrong.

Saskatchewan had six possessions in the second half and Sunseri quarterbacked them all.  As the Riders fumbled the ball away time and again, as offensive linemen went down like flies and the Ottawa sacks mounted, it turned into an incredibly wretched display.

All the while, Smith stood stoicly on the Rider sidelines while clutching his helmet.

We were assured in the broadcast booth that Smith was indeed not injured.

So why wouldn’t he come back into the game?  Surely he represented the Riders’ best chance to win, no?

“There was a thought to putting him back in but things transpired that made it a moot point so we stuck with Tino,” Riders coach Corey Chamblin told 620 CKRM after the game.  “I'll leave it at that.  It started temporary but ended up being longer than that.”

When asked again hours after the game, the Roughriders refused to reveal what “transpired” with Smith on the sidelines.

That’s fine.  That opens the door for us to speculate.

And my guess is that Smith told off whoever made the decision to yank him from the game.  Could it have been offensive coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine or Chamblin himself?  At this point, it doesn’t matter.

And, if my theory is true, how could you blame Smith?  His defensive teammates were missing tackles left and right and early on gave the Riders no chance to win.

And Smith throws one interception and gets pulled?

It would seem inexplicable, but then again no one can explain what’s gone so horribly wrong week-in and week-out in the worst Roughrider season in nearly 40 years.

My theory of a spat with Smith was confirmed in the Leader Post's postgame story by Murray McCormick.  Apparently, he didn't take the news of being pulled well and that's why he was benched for the duration.

Can't blame him.  Dwight Anderson used to scream at the coaches on a weekly basis but I guess that was okay.

Also, I don't know why Chamblin would divulge the Smith info to the rest of the media, but not during a live interview on the radio rightsholder 620 CKRM.

Regardless, clearly things denigrated into a 'I'll show you who's boss' situation at around the 8:00 mark of the second quarter on Sunday.  At the expense of the game, and of the team.

This tells us so many things about this football team right now and not one of them is good.

“There was some good things in all phases but as a team we lost,” Chamblin shrugged afterwards.  “Not enough guys rose to the occasion to win this game.”

How many guys rising to the occasion is it going to take to win a game?  You can’t fire 44 players but you can fire one coach and that's what the Rider Nation is screaming for today.  Chamblin was asked afterwards if he expects to be directing this football club in next week’s Labour Day Classic against Winnipeg Sunday at Mosaic Stadium.

“Every week I come into this whether we're 8-2 or 0-9, the decision is never mine,” Chamblin said incredibly calmly.  “I still come to work and do what I need to do.  The decision doesn't lie in my hands.”

It will be interesting to see who's the boss come Sunday.

CARTERI'S CORNER

Here's the postgame analysis from 620 CKRM Rider Radio analyst Carm Carteri:

"No question it was embarrassing.  In my 27 years as a broadcaster up here with CKRM, I don't think I've ever felt this low for a football team.  I mean this was devastating.  The RedBlacks were a team I thought the Riders could beat and then head back home for a back-to-back with Winnipeg and get back into this western race.  But boy oh boy this display of football out here today in Ottawa was just draining because of the way they lost.

"Ottawa opened up with two long drives and the Riders got behind 14-0 early.  It took a great effort out of Scott McHenry - a great Canadian kid out of Saskatoon - to block a punt and get this team right back in it.  But when you look at it, Brett Smith, who was fairly elusive in that first half, threw an untimely interception in the endzone and I think he got - well I don't know if I can say 'disciplined' or not - but he was benched after that.

"The Riders were only down by four points at the half!  They went with Tino Sunseri - which I thought was good to let Brett settle down a bit - but Tino didn't get anything going.  The Riders never went back to Brett Smith and I'm not saying that's why they lost this game, but I'm stunned sitting here right now.  You can't describe it.  Bad penalties, bad plays on offense, on defense, and then the RedBlacks made it happen for themselves.

"This is a Rider team really, really in trouble, if I can say that.  Or a franchise for that matter.  I don't know what they're building.  They've got some talent out there but right now the building blocks are knocked over and I don't know what the answer is.

"We're gonna have to check with Corey Chamblin on the Brett Smith thing.  That's going to be a big question asked: 'Why wasn't Brett Smith put back in the game?'  We know he wasn't injured.  We're both stunned up here in the booth why they wouldn't bring him back in the game when the Riders were still in it.

"We're not gonna sit here and blame Tino because he was abused out there.  The RedBlacks went after him and they wound up with 10 sacks.  The RedBlacks really went after him and were a fired up football team.  And the Riders couldn't match that intensity.

"You can lose a game Rod, but when you don't show that effort, then it's something higher and hopefully that's something we can figure out."

------

The Riders flew home on a charter immediately after the game but Carm and I won't return home from Ottawa until Monday afternoon.

If there's a news conference on Monday, I won't be around for it.  That's a story for another day, but deserves to be told.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK!

Time to clean house. That's not an overreaction, that's the truth. Clearly the coaches have lost the dressing room and the talent on the field is not at the level it needs to be in order to compete and win. Seriously, house cleaning time. This is more embarrassing than the 90's for crying out loud.

I consider myself to be one of the die hard/most positive Rider fans out there, but Corey Chamblin embarassed Rider Nation today. Not just our city, province, but our entire fanbase Canada wide. Call his bluff. If he is such a great Coach, let his record try to sell himself for his next gig. It won't be for a long time in the CFL. What team will hire him as a DC or Head Coach, seriously. His resume just decreased 1000% this year as far as I am concerned.

I don't know Craig Reynolds personally. We all know he wasn't hired because of his football background. We are sure going to find out in about 12 hours if he has what it takes to make the right decision. In my humble opinion, Corey Chamblin has coached his last CFL game for at least 2 to 3 years!!!

Tino Sunseri should never have seen another snap in the CFL again! If you were going to yank Smith (DUMB DUMB DUMB), at least show us what Price can do. I wouldn't trust Tino to make the post-game subs!

As far as I am concerned the Riders season has one game left, Labour Day. It will be our grey cup and then after that there wont be anything else to keep most of us interested. Especially if Chamblin is around. NFL starts up and hockey is just around the corner with WHL, SJHL and of course NHL.

Mike said...

I feet terrible for young Brett Smith. Kid played his heart out and Chamblin pulls a BS move like that...give me a break. And of all things, roll with Tino Sunseri, the human statue...man oh man. CC will bench Smith for one mistake but these guys on defense that miss tackles or assignments get a free pass every friggin game. It's disgusting. His defensive schemes are atrocious.

Corey Chamblin must be removed of his duties immediately.

Corey Chamblin over this season has shown that he is nothing more than a stupid, immature, arrogant 2 year old kid when it comes to being a coach.

Fire his ass out of the Riders now !!!!!

It's not the 1st time Coach tore into Smith. He gave it to him at the half in Edmonton in front of his team mates. It's time Roddy. Time for a new voice in that locker room.

It is high time for the BOD and Taman to micromanage Chamblin. Demote him to db coach or some much lower position.Use Chapdelaine or whomever as interim HC till seasons end. What he done today to embarrass Rider Nation ..a firing only benefits Corey and nobody else.By cutting him down to size, maybe by seasons end his head will have stopped swelling..If Taman doesn't want to do it, Oday probably will..Polkabill from the Peg

It was clear Brett Smith was angry about being benched. He should be angry. If he wasn't, I'd be questioning his character. It appears to me, Brett was disrespected by Chapdelaine and/or Chamblin. You don't bench a QB over an ill-advised play. You sit him down, get him to calm down and refocus for the next series.

Listening to Chamblin's rationale for benching Smith tonight, and post game interviews from him throughout the season after each loss, it is clear his ego has gotten in the way of what is best for the team. It's time for Brendan Taman to do the right thing and send Chamblin to join Tom Higgins on the unemployment line.

The next 9 games should be an opportunity for the next head coach to see what he has to work with as the team focuses on the future.

Anonymous said...

I hear it will cost $750,000 to fire Chamblin. How much more to get rid of Taman too?

Regardless, it's worth it. Fire them both, it doesn't matter who takes over, it can't be worse.

Anonymous said...

If Chamblin and Taman aren't fired by noon Monday then they better call the AGM and elect a whole new board.

Over the last 2 months I've stood up for Chamblin over and over. I've pointed to our cup victory and his coach of the year. Said he didn't get stupid all of a sudden. I've said he just needs someone to help him understand that he needs to step back from the defence. I'm done defending him. He's on his own now. If it was my choice I would now show him the door. He's lost support from all elements of the team. He's never accepted any responsibility for the team's performance. There is no point continuing. Bye bye Chamblin.

Mike from Vita, MB said...

There has 2 b changes. The team played without any urgency in the second half. It doesnt seem like both Chamblin or Brent Smith can b together. One of them won't b back next week. I know which one I'd send packing!

Anonymous said...

I've been one of the most positive Rider fans out there too.

But I've seen enough.

A rookie quarterback gets yanked after throwing an interception, but not one defensive player is removed after two opening TD drives?

Missed tackles? No worries
Penalties? No problem
Interception? You're done.

Darian Durant would be out of football if Chamblin was his coach early in his career.

I get that Smith mouthed off. But at least he's passionate enough to want into the game. You can see that by his play.

If Chamblin's not gone I'd be surprised, and disappointed.

Wow Corey has managed to piss everyone off in Riderville. Even Rod is pissed! It's time for this guy to move on. But make no mistake about either, what happens right now will be reflection on Craig Reynolds stay as the new President and CEO of the Riders. So far with 0-9 team and not a word out of him, it doesn't look good for the future. It may not just Be Brendan and Corey's job that are on the line!!!

Anonymous said...

Smith showed more passion and guts than many others. I love QBs who give 'er to try and win. Rookie QBs like him make mistakes out of sheer desire. Eventually experience reduces the mistakes and they become great QBs. Redblacks knew they didn't need to worry about Tino so they just came. They could not do that with Smith. It is rebuilding time and Smith better be the starter.

Anonymous said...

Jeremy Day will be taking over!

Anonymous said...

When we had all the penalties, fans wanted players benched. People said penalties were a coaching issue.
Then smith gets benched for discipline issues and the same people are mad at CC for doing what they wanted.
I don't like players being benched because I want the best players on the field. With benching, he team and fans pay the price too. Innovative coaches can have better ways to correct behaviour.
As many of the pro commentators have said, it's up to the team to deal with penalty issues. Vets should be helping.
I was a huge CC supporter until yesterday. When he let us lose that game for what appears to be discipline issues, I am POd. He punished the team and fans.
He refuses to be accountable for his mistakes. At least that what the media portrays.
My goodwill has run out.

Anonymous said...

Smith reminds me a lot of a young Kent Austin. Who is this guy, he takes command of the huddle, leads by example, passionate to win, people listen, sounds familiar. Chamblain has this team playing scared and afraid to make mistakes.
Fire this guy now and if the guy who hired him disagrees then fire him too. Give the ball to O'Day and let Chaplaine or Dice be the interm coach
for the remainder of the season. I would much sooner watch the team loose with young promising players and get an idea of who should be here next year then watch guys like Tino. The season is over for this year, start playing for next year now.

It's time to have a talk to Jim Hopson. Bring him back as a consultant or in charge of football operations. He was given no end of praise for his tenure and has to be feeling sick about what he left behind. If he is as good as reported then he is needed. Reynolds is not a football guy and would probably love the help. As for the board I have no idea how many football types are there. The Rider board was once made up of whose who in the community, like stints as CofC Pres. Some good management types I am sure. But football needs more than bottom line focus. Reynolds can handle that.

Make no mistake about it, this 0-9 start and gongshow of a team is as much on Hopson as it is on Chamblin and Taman. He was always front and centre to take credit for the good times, never for the screw ups. And this is a pretty serious one. No, Hopson is not part of the solution moving forward. Might as well bring back Al Ford, Tom Shepard and the rest of the old boys club if you're going to do that. This team needs a new direction and new voices leading the charge. No more looking back. It's handcuffed this team after the 89 cup and it's doing so again after the '13 cup. No more backwards thinking. Let's move forward.

Players aren't good enough. Chamblin same coach who won GC. When Riders were good they had young Shologan, Butler, young Getzlaf, Fantuz and Bagg as Cdn starters. Those guys are old now. You replace them with Tennant (7th round pick), a McDougall, Carroll etc and your team will be much worse. To me that's on the GM. His young Cdn talent is mediocre and he still cant find a MLB. 0-9 means more than just a coaching issue. Its a player talent issue too. Cant just depend on DD. Im in the camp clean house from Taman to chamblin, hire a new GM who can pick his coach and go from there. of course Woz will disagree because Taman is a great GM in his eyes lol

Anonymous said...

They had a key solution to their problems yesterday playing. Give Messam the ball 20-25 times a game and things are quite different. It would have wore down Ottawa's defence, controlled the game, and give a young QB some breathing room. Instead Chapedelaine is like Austin, addicted to the passing game. From the top down this team is poorly constructed i.e. manager, coaches, and some players. Some players making the same mistakes as game #1 are given a pass, while some kids like Smith who actually care, are beaten down. This train has completely jumped the tracks. Someone gave Taman an extension based on very little. He in turn gave Chamblin a big extension based on very little. Now the board wants to keep these guys solely based on finances. That's poor management and not fair to fans who are the end financiers.

It's time O'Day takes the reigns after a house cleaning. Either give him the job or look for someone to take control of a purging, and course correction of this franchise. A couple new coach(s) and a director of Quality Control should start today setting the groundwork in place for next year. Why wait until the end of this season? The cancer will continue to spread, free agents will not want to stay, free agents will not want to come, and fans will be driven away. This can't be allowed to continue intact it was erroneously allowed to get to this point. Memo to Reynolds and BOD; its not about being a bean counter now it's about football and this franchise. The latter has suffered from the wrong people being in place. You do not reward people with lifetime .440 winning %. This mess had better get cleaned up or the second half will be unbearable.

I like Smith. He plays with fire. That comes with a temper though, and it can clearly be seen that he's got a mouth. I don't agree with the decision to bench him, but if he let loose on the coaches for telling him to sit the next drive out, I'll back the coach. The buck stops at the boss and Smith needs to be in control of himself. Somebody brought up a young DD. He threw his share of endzone interceptions. He'd sit for a drive or two and would get a better read of the game.

Maybe Smith and Dressler should go for a beer. The guy got eye gouged and never said a word!

Dereliction of duties to the Saskatchewan Roughriders team mission statement and mandate grounds for the Immediate dismissal of both General Manager Brendan Taman and Head Coach Cory Chamblin. Expediate urgency remediation required by said team Board of Directors, team CEO/President.

Last year Chamblin started benching players for mistakes and underperformance, like Anthony Allen and others. He has continued this practice this year by removing players from the active roster and indicating some players are done for the season.
I think the Rider brass should take a page out of Chamblin's book and remove him from active coaching for the rest of the year. It is obvious that he is under performing in coaching the defence...even though he isn't the D coordinator but he continues to take on that role and the D is not performing well. More importantly he is not doing his role of head coach well at all. He continues to make poor game time coaching decisions, and yesterday by pulling smith and stubbornly refusing to put him back on the game and let Tino get sacked 9 times, really now?
here's your opportunity to step in....I know you don't want to fire him and assume his salary but you could pull him from active duty, bench him for the rest of the year before he does any more damage to the team....we need someone in there who puts players and the team in the position to succeed. Waiting 9 more games to find a different coach might do irreparable damage to this team.

I doubt Smith said too much to the HC other than asking why he was taking him out. Everybody knows you don't question Chamblin, on anything! When you have someone who actually wants to be in there and you're keeping him on the bench? Who does that? Veteran QB's do the same thing, often times. Nobody mentions the porous o-Line that couldn't block four guys and had him running for his life. Chamblin is mis-managing Smith and others. Folks will remember this when Smith choses to go elsewhere and become a stud star. That defining moment when Chamblin had to prove he is so experienced and capable (2-17) in last 19 regular season games, that he showed Smith who had bigger gonads. Smith won't forget.

Smith will probably be a star in Ottawa or BC in a couple years. That's what we do here is eat our young. Meanwhile Richards looked like a pylon when he wan't taking stupid penalties. Sunseri fumbling the ball away in the shadow of his goal posts doesn't seem to me to be QB who understood the game situation, as CC puts it. The benching of Smith was just a guy losing control trying to exert his power to prove to himself he is the boss. This team has far greater problems than Smith's interception.

Time for us as the great fans we are to admit this team is not good enough. They play hard and play close games but in the end they find a way to fall apart. You can blame injuries, coaching, youth, blame whatever you want but you can't blame Corey Chamblin as the only reason this team is failing. Hating the man for benching a young ambitious quarterback does not mean he has to go. Corey doesn't throw interception, or take penalties or miss tackles the players do. Somewhere along the way we have forgotten that. Yes our record is atrocious. Yes Corey is a head strong stubborn individual who likes things done his way. Yes he needs to shoulder his share of the blame for decisions he has made, but face facts , these men are now playing to have a job next year and so is Corey. Let the season fold out as it will and the powers that be can determine everyone's fate then.

I get that your first loyalty, and Carm's, is to the team.

Geoff Currier was never an apologist for the team. In fact, he often stated that that was not his role.

Be careful not to alienate us too much. Without a fan base, the gig goes too.

Sounds like PEDERSEN is losing HIS TEAM on here as well as Chamblin. Maybe Pedersen should go, along with Chamblin for his smart ass remarks to people who are supposed to be able to say what they want to as long as it is not "filth talk" . If he can't take the feed back perhaps he should be benched or fired at the same time.

Anonymous said...

A few things:

1) Those calling for Cory Chamblin to be fired I have a couple of questions for you. Have any of you ever been fired? Do any of you actually have a job?

2) When Nealon Greene was the QB you couldn't I listened to the CKRM post game show. I heard comments about Chamblin being arrogant, to much pride, doesn't listen, won't admit mistakes, arrogant, cocky, and a bunch of other descriptors. You know what it boils down to?

Good old Saskatchewan racism raising it's head.

3) Here is why Chamblin will not be fired. Taman publically backed him. If Taman fires him it makes Taman look indecisive.

It's a full blown mess. So here is what will and should happen. Mr. Reynolds who is not a football guy should wait until the end of this season. He should immediately fire Brendan Taman, Craig Smith, and Cory Chamblin. As of today he should be doing his due dilligence to put his front office in place.

The other side of this is Craig Reynolds is not a football guy. Doesn't matter, he doesn't have a vision or idea what to do and I personally think he's in the back office panicking.

If he hires Jeremy O'Day as his General Manager then here's what I'm doing. It's Pats games vs Riders games because I won't go through the Al Ford era again.

3) Read War Machine about how Belichik built the Patriots. This is not happening with the Roughriders and they are not set up for success.

4) It's amazing fans are so stupid they want the Head Coach fired, but have no issue with the current Prime Minister or Premier. This is why the kids of today are screwed for the future.

4) In summary Cory Chamblin should be fired. The problem is nothing would change. So ride out the season and then they're all gone.

Hey rod did u know I put a sticker of ur face and the riders on my vacuum and it started sucking better . U r a joke . U back other people's comments from months back. But just like before u and CC can't handle real criticism that is true and u don't know what to say after it happens, wow great commenting.

Very professional Rod you have lost class completely with statements like this

"Nope. Just whackos like you"

You don't even know me and you call me that for putting on this statement
"What kind of a statement is this Rod? Are you talking about everyone on your board here?
"There will always be people saying there's something wrong with the Riders. Even if they were 18-0.
We don't listen to you."
Explain please!"

...I want to make one other point which disgusted me. I'll call into SportsCage, but Rod is off today.

Two things:

1) Fred Wagman former volunteer President called into the post game. He was railing about firing Cory Chamblin. Fred if you'll recall he was the guy who presided over the lottery to keep the team afloat, and said Kevin Mason was the future. I worked for Fred. Fred was the guy who drafted a dead guy....so that's his football and business acumen right there. As for firing Cable Regina walked him out of the building so maybe a little more empathy eh Freddy?

2) I was disgusted by Michael Ball. Some people and he's one of them should stick to their limitations. For him it's spinning AC/DC records, and making man-scaping jokes.

Ballsy likes to point out he lives beside Chamblin, but he's on there advocating for his firing. Some neighbour. Then backtracks and says he'd never call for a guy to be fired. The meeting of the minds has George Yannitsos doing the same thing. Unreal

What made me wretch was when a guy called in and said point blank Ballsy will be the future play by play guy for the Saskatchewan Roughriders....Ballsy didn't cut him off, didn't contradict, and certainly didn't stick up for Rod Pedersen.

This told me one thing. YOU CAN"T TRUST MICHAEL BALL!!!!

For those of us who've been around this guy was actually fired off of Rider broadcasts way back when, and was allowed back out of the kindness of Rod's heart.

How does he repay him? By backstabbing and trying to grab the top job. So if you work with this guy or live beside him just know loyalty only goes so far with him.

...now I'm done.

Y'er Welcome

Listening to Carm's voice cracking as he talked to Chamblin said more than anything else to me. Tough interview. BTW, the problems with Smith's game are exactly why we should have a QB coach. Sure he scrambles before he maybe should at times but that has kept us in games. What kind of coach benches our only valid QB instead of helping him.

What is the next step?
I think the talent level is good, I do not believe any other team in league could be remotely competitive if they suffered the same number of injuries the 'Riders have faced.
I am a Chamblin and Taman supporter but, signing and playing Sunseri just makes no sense. The kid just has not progressed, he is still making the same errors he made in college.

Message to the Board, please don't panic and blow it all up. That is what put us into a losing cycle in the past. Changing the Head Coach will not heal players.
This season is lost, after the season, Assess, Plan, Act and move forward.

Rod, when an idiot tells you that basically the media should be listening to the fans because they told you how bad things were gonna get then that person is a complete WHACKO. When another gentleman writes in defending said whacko and says that you were calling him down, don't worry, he doesn't understand that many fans are constantly whiny and even when we win they are saying crap like "we, gotta do something soon, cause this winnin won't last forever!". Why would the media, at any point listen to whiny bs that is stated all the time, so to the gentleman that wrote in defending the first whacko, you too are the type of whacko that Rod is meaning, no one cares what you have to say (let's not forget who gives the fans a voice every single day in the ability to write on this blog or call in to his radio show). If you really have been following the blog for years you would know that this year Rod was a really good team guy (because he is part of the team and part of the success and branding of the team, anyone else here write a popular book on the Riders or do a 3 hr daily talk show based on the riders?? didn't think so. He is more Rider than the players or coach.) and Rod has been having the teams back being positive. Imagine how terrible he would sound if he was negative all the time. However, after the past few games Rod has been hinting towards change, saying things like Chamblin should hand over the D responsibilities or that anything is needed for a spark. He also gives the Riders breaks knowing their penalty and injury situations in a season of new rules. Yet he comes out last night and let's everyone know just by the tone of his voice that he isn't happy with whats going on. Should Rod act like a fan and call for everyone's head every time something doesn't go our way ? Remember, Rod is around these guys all the time and works with them a lot. He has respect for them as they do him because he doesn't do the things and say the things you think he should jump the gun and say or do. So at no time did I read the above and think Rod was being rude to us fans, I think he is probably picking out the idiots and just having a little fun with them calling them whacko's because he knows he doesnt need those idiots as followers anyway. Good on ya Roddy!!! Keep up the good work. It can't be fun these days but you do it anyway and you do it with class and professionalism. Thank you

I have been a CC supporter until yesterday too. Now it is time for him to move on and take Tino with him. I cannot for the life of me figure out why he would go with Tino yesterday maybe for a couple of series but jeez just to make a point and throw the game away like that........total crap. Good luck in you next gig Mr Chamblin. You are not welcome here any longer.

I agree with other posters I would rather watch kids like Smith who are trying and giving effort that watching CC get his ego bent out of shape.

The tickets are not going selling as quickly so yes Craig has to make a move. If Chamblin is the coach and Tino the QB on Sunday expect a lot of booing!!!

Hold on guys. Rod's referring to the "wackos" and those they "don't listen to" as those perennial whiners who complain constantly even in the good times. Like those who were calling for Doubles to get benched because he throws one pick despite throwing four TD's and winning the ball game. Not us regulars who have a legitimate complaint about how Chamblin and Taman are running this football team. That's different. Rod is as frustrated as the rest of us, believe me. It's hard being a fan these days.

How bout let's all eat a snickers, Rod included, and calm down. Yeah it's frustrating. Yelling at each other isn't going to get change or make anyone happy.

Memo to Alex in Davidson:

Please use paragraphs in your posts. No one will suffer through an ordeal of reading an endless series of lines of text. The Great and Wonderful Woz used to do the same when he first hoped on the comment bandwagon here.

Short paragraphs are key if you want someone to read your opinion.

Here is a brief example:

It is very important that the Rider management announce an interim head coach in the next day or so. I am sure they are talking to different people and looking at options.

Could Jeremy O'Day step in as interim coach, ala Jim Popp?

Why I think this may make sense is that it enables the GM team to evaluate their talent going forward with nine games left. The next head coach for 2016 will involve a series of interviews with coaches who are now unavailable due to being assistants or being tied into other contracts.

I believe O'Day does have the respect of the players he helped recruit and sign, being a former star player himself. After all, the first time Jim Popp took over as coach he did not have a coaching resume.

So am I reading it correctly Rod, has coach now started insulating the team from the media, keeping you guys off the flight? Sounds like something this current regime would be capable of doing. I could see the next step being players pulled from community appearances to insulate them from fans.

The longer he stays on the more his poor leadership shows itself. He knows how tear guys down but doesn't know how to build them up. They need to get him out of town before he can do any more damage to this team. Taman? So far I just feel like he takes too much input to do his job effectively, I think he steers the boat where people tell him to which is always in to bad waters. A good GM should be driving the boat.

Fire CC today, Taman too as far as I'm concerned. Interm until the season's end and start an exhaustive search today. Put HC on JC. Sure Quick is inexperienced at DC, but really will that be any worse that the CC/Quick combo. Lets see if he is qualified without the meddling. He does have some credentials. I wouldnt be opposed to hiring the full time replacement today, but I just don't know how you can do an adequate search in-season.

And to those that say in season change doesnt work, I say BS. 0-9, tough to be worse than losing 100% of your games. Status quo can't be acceptable when the season is half over and you havent won a game. Turn the page and start writing the next chapter.

I thought the plane from Ottawa was heading to alabama( Chamblins home state)The players have given up on him, as well as the fans. come Labour day and beyond, it will be interesting to see how many fans attend Rider games for the rest fo the year.Corey has always said its a win now league, and he aint winning. With the team that he had in 2013 a trained gorilla could have been the HC and won...

Dan said...

If it costs $750,000 to fire Chamblin, and then we get rid of Taman too?

Rider nation will stand behind the loss and we will just have to DRINK MORE BEERS to make up for the salary loss. Easy! Easy! Easy!

Then at least we will be getting some value for are dollar when we fill the stadium. Also we might see some real football.

We also will make sure Rod & Cam will travel on the team plane.

Rod's not the enemy here! We are so upset and angry that we tend to hang on every word or phrase that gets published and make it more than it really is. I have to believe some of the things said on this site are very hurtful, yet he shows he has thick skin and publishes the posts anyway. We don't kill the messenger anymore, do we?

I feel bad for him. The only comment that irks me as it does most, is the nut job Obama getting on here and spewing his left leaning tripe. Pure garbage.

On to football; it's very bad now at 0-9, but what's it going to be like 4 or 5 games down the road especially if we have our lunch handed to us a few more times? I don't think it matters who got a vote of confidence from whom. Previous actions and statements were predicated on the improvement of this cub, and that hasn't happened. That was the Ottawa Redblacks out there. A very ordinary team that tried to give us the game. A totally beatable team that we managed to embarrass ourselves against.

This is a toxic situation and to allow it to continue another half season will have a long term cost much greater than the payouts to ones who got us into this mess. To give a long lucrative contract to a Gm with a lifetime winning % around .440 and to a coach with a thin resume and an equally low winning % leaves me absolutely cold. The BOD was asleep at the switch and should have questioned rather than acquiesce. They are after all the trustees of this endeavour. It may be far more beneficial to bite the bullet and loss now. The financial problems with this continued mess could be far greater.

Doing something now would at least symbolically show the bill payers that there is an attempt at leadership and vision. It may be what the players are calling for under their curtain of silence. If this vile situation continues there will be big time problems by seasons end. Players will not come back nor will they come here. It may also breathe a new breath of life into a group that is now on life support. O'day could be the interim GM and they could bring in an interim coach. There are lots out there. Then put a group together, not headed by Hopson, to seek out persons with winning pedigrees to set the wheels in motion. Anything less borders on gross negligence and incompetence by the BOD and CEO.

Secondly, if dismissals are considered shouldn't replacements be secured first?
Fans can afford to be reactive, successful professional organizations can't.

The only thing Obama got right was about Fred "just be thankful you even have a team" Wagman. That old boys club mentality ruined this team in the 90's and now one of their guys (Hopson) has the team on the same path. Of course the Hopson-boosters will say that this is none of this fault and should in fact be brought back to right the ship. What a joke. Like the other poster said, it's time for completely new people and a new direction. And don't give me this "oh they won the cup in 13, they deserve a chance". Guess what, past championships don't mean a damn thing moving forward.

From Kel in Victoria:

Wow here I am writing in and I am just one of over one-hundred people to make comments... RP, the Riders downfall is going to make you rich with the 'hit-count'!

Although I am sure I will not say what likely has already been said (I never actually read all 100 previous comments), but I will say this: 'All momentum stopped the moment Smith was pulled'. Simple as that.

One observation comes to mind... Last season Coach Chambiln started the weirdest thing that I never - ever - had seen before; when he would pull the running backs for a fumble. This became something of a strange conversation that seemed to separate Chamblin from the other coaches; however noticeably he did not have that strategy during the Grey Cup winning year. Now to my point, this idea of pulling key players in key positions for the odd mistake is just simply wrong.

Case in point, pulling the young QB out of the game for one mistake was not only reminiscent of pulling running backs for a fumble, but again demonstrated that Chambin may have now 'crested' by comparison to his once strong 'wave' of coaching momentum,

Chamblin has to go...

Saying the dislike for Chamblin is racially motivated is a comment made purely to drive up blog hits.

I just read in the LP that Coach Chamblin thinks that the momentum of the game took a bad turn for the worse after the Smith interception.

Sorry to say, that is not true at all. The momentum changed at that point not due to the interception, but rather as a direct result of the coaches decision to pull Smith from the game; only at that point did the momentum give way. I am sure all the other players were absolutely pissed at Chamblin for that move... slowly they stopped playing.

Pulling guys in key positions who make an error is wrong! All players make mistakes, including seasoned veteran players. Having a good play or a bad play is the human element of the game; this is football right? One team is going to win and the other will lose.

Perfection or be pulled will not work in any sports league - simple as that.

Coach Chamblin - you have to go!
