PRESEASON: ESKIMOS 31 ROUGHRIDERS 24

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - Derel Walker caught a 36-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter as the Edmonton Eskimos rallied to beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 31-24 on Saturday in Canadian Football League pre-season action.

Justin Goltz threw the pass to Walker and finished the night 2 for 3 for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Darian Durant started behind centre for Saskatchewan for the first time since injuring his elbow last season. He completed 4 of 8 passes for 42 yards while playing all but one series in the first quarter.

Free-agent signing Kevin Glenn would replace Durant and threw for 73 yards while completing eight passes and a touchdown.

The Eskimos took a 14-11 lead into halftime.

Holy crap ... put the flags away and let the game flow.

CFL game isn't worth watching like this.

Anonymous said...

Flags should fly when there are infractions that will occur in the regular season. If the offensive line doesn't improve, we better keep all the Qbs that we have in camp

Dunigan and Miller would be better broadcasting Lawn Bowling than football.

I wonder, with the rule change for defenders, if the notion of having a running game is at an end. The CFL will be a 90% passing offense. If your QB is good, you either complete the pass or the D gets a penalty.

I know my wife and daughters will hate me, but I think that the Riders need to release Tino now! Brett Smith has what it takes and can develop into the future second string QB when Kevin Glen decides to hang up his cleats. Smith has earned his spot by his performance and will benefit from the extra reps.

$100 a ticket for a pre-season game is unreal - it would have been something to do when the boom was on, but with the crisis in the oil industry it seems a tad too high.

This 4th quarter is painful. We've got no depth.

So sad to see Tino regress in such dramatic fashion.

Time to move forward with Brett Smith as #3. Smith is almost 4 years younger than Tino. (Smith has just turned 23 years old). He has a lot of talent to build upon and can be the quarterback the Riders can develop behind Durant for the future.

I must be a bit of a traditionalist because I don't like any of the rule changes. Way too many flags. Hopefully either the teams figure out how to play within the rules or the rules are changed.
Who wants to see a flag on every play? Not Me. Jeez let them play already.
Maybe I am mistaken but wouldn't an effective threat of running slow down the pass rush? Just sayin'
Was EE playing their top defense against our third string O-line or did it just look that way?

Tino: I feel sorry for him. He looks like he tries hard and works hard, but it's just not working out on the riders. I bet he will flourish in the future, but it's not happening now nor will it happen with the riders. It's bad blood now. He will be happier else where and we will all be relieved when he moves on and we can move forward. It's just not working.

Tina is slow as molasses in all facets of the game.. cut him now please move on.. my opinion .

All you mouthbreathers were on TSN's case for not showing football. That is what you wanted to see? Terrible! How many penalties were there? What a bad showcase for the game! I would rather watch womens soccer at its highest calibre than what I watched tonight.

Oh yeah, Tino can catch the first flight out of Saskatoon back to wherever he is from because he is DONE!

That should be called "FLAG" football. What a joke.

From what I saw in the 4th qtr, it did look like Coach Jones still had his starting D in the game against the Riders 2nd and 3rd stringers.. and I started thinking.. Jones does realize this is a Pre season game right? This one means diddly squat! The Riders were focusing on evaluating their back ups and the Eskimos were playing their starting D and wanting the win! Meh!.. We'll get em when it counts! GO RIDERS!!

Rich said...

Give Tino another chance, the same plays that Brett got and same squad and let him open 3rd quarter, then we can see. In defense, all EE did was blitz all 4 th quarter and Sask O line were hiway pilons.

Anonymous said...

Preseason or not, the game is about winning, Riders should have brought the blitz on just like EE, hard to evaluate players when QB is smothered all night long. Offensive line did not look good, defensive line looked average, special teams was below average. Messam looked slow, highlight for me was Early and the new receivers.

Anonymous said...

Well Brian what did you expect? It was an exhibition game!

Go watch womans soccer then. Nobody cares what you would rather watch. Post on the womans soccer blogs too, why do people have to be so ignorant, so what if some of us wanted to watch the game i enjoyed it. Brett smith looked good thats nice to see. And what makes us mouthbreathers for wanting to watch a footba─║l game

Agree with comments earlier: Tino probably will be released - O-Line could be a liability and I think Jamel Richardson and Taj Smith will not make this team .

Anonymous said...

Chamblin should be playing to win... Look at EE, flushing Riders QB , mesmerizing Riders offensive line, the Eskimos then have a winning mentality. Corey is being out schooled by his master AGAIN...

Anonymous said...

I heard Coach Chamblin say before the game that Chris Jones would bring the heat all game long, I believe he wanted to see how his team handled it. Unfortunately Tino had the fourth quarter to show his talents and Edmonton stole that quarter. That being said he's been here long enough he should be the clean up quarterback that can finish off games. He didn't do it. One more chance to prove he belongs but Smith looked good! Hopefully they took this one for what it was and next week things are a bit more polished. Absolutely hate the rule changes and it took an awful lot away from the game. Defensive backs are simply going to run up and down the field all game, for what ? The least little contact when trying to bat away a ball will result in a penalty. We just became a very amateur game in my opinion.

Anonymous said...

How do you spell relief? D U R A N T.

Nothing else mattered to me after seeing DD take a hit or two.

I think Steven Miller may have played his way off the team with his run to the first tackler punt returns.

Anonymous said...

Well Marty, if you go back and read comments about the bitching, whining and moaning from Rider fans because TSN wasn't showing all the exhibition games, this proves that TSN likely doesn't want to show pre-season football because it is so bad!

The comments from three quarters of the idiots on here who find this as a platform to voice their anger in mostly anonymous fashion shows they have no nuts and no real clue as to what is going on.

Marty, you at least can put your name down beside your comment so good on ya because many others lack the human skills to do such a thing.

Hope you enjoyed what you desperately craved.

How's Ryan Smith today, he got his bell rung yesterday.

Brian, are you the south Regina Brian or the one from Saskatoon? lol

Anyways, it took a lot of guts to put your name to your post, "good on ya"

Any word on when the Riders return to Regina and start regular practices at Mosaic? Which days will be open to the public?

Thanks

Anonymous said...

I'm from Regina and glad the Riders have training camp in Saskatoon to let the more northern places go watch them practice live. However, I can't wait for the team to get back to Regina so I can go watch them finally.

SK Oiler Fan said...

That should end Tino's time as a Rider. Likely the career. Throws a nice ball, but just can't read the D fast enough. Absolutely no pocket awareness or escapability.
Wow, quite the facility they have there at ft Mac. I guess the cost versus usage doesn't need to make sense up there. Different playing field.

Was I the only one to see Getzlaf drop another pass last night? I think it is safe to say he is in the down years and I am starting to wonder if he could be a cut or trade bait because of the $$$ he is making. He isn't the player he was and with young guys like Pierchalzki and Demski on his heels, it might be times up. Thoughts?

Kudos to Balsey, Luc and Mike for hanging in at the 4 Seasons and doing the late, late show last night after the game.

I hope that all the teams and all the CFL officials take a hard look at the film from this past week in terms of the penalties. The objective is to make the game more exciting and attractive for fans. All concerned need to pay urgent heed to what can be done better with the new rules.

Go Riders,

The Eskimos did not have their starters in on defense in the 4th quarter. But all you whiners and Tino lovers keep telling yourself that.

Anonymous said...

Should be interesting to see today's cuts on the first round of roster reductions. The CFL website is tracking the cuts today.

Whatever one thinks of Tino he has had a few chances to step up and this was another disappointment. Hopefully the Riders just cut their losses today and move on. This is pro football, there are only so many chances.

Also I certainly hope there is a run game somewhere in there. Very few rush attempts equals very few wins.

Riders suck!

Anonymous said...

Sunseri and Woldu could be 2 vets sent packing.

Smith is young enough to be a developmental QB, Sunseri is not.

Webster and MacDougal have past Woldu on the depth chart in terms of canadian DB’s.

Anonymous said...

Woldu has blown his opportunity to be a DB. His only lifeline now is to continue being the special teams demon he is.

Smith ahead of Sunseri

Dan Clark need to work on his hikes to Durant! We cannot afford a bad snap, a fall and then a hit that could result in injury to our franchise QB. Job one is getting the ball to the QB without acrobatics.

If the Riders decide not to keep Namaan Roosevelt, the Bombers would be wise to snap him up, given his past with Drew Willy at the University of Buffalo.

I was expecting mind blowing, think out of the box offense, that's what all the preseason interviews were on chapdelaines plays, it looked like he couldn't addapt to blitz, blitz and more blitz. I also didn't think Jaques should have said "read plays faster "to Tino on national TV, that's something you say one on one without anyone around. Not impressed with his style of coaching so far.

Happy said...

Why would Jacques unveil any plays of value during a pre-season evaluation game? Give your head a shake!

Anonymous said...

So rod just a note, the overnight numbers show that the football game drew less audience than a repeat of Sports Center last night...Sure TSN is glad they spent a hundred thousand dollars to broadcast the game instead of just replaying a SC that would have cost them nothing. You are kind of in the media, do they tend to worry about if anyone is watching what you are broadcasting? Maybe now someone will give you that explanation of why no one broadcasts preseason games

Rich said...

Hey Happy im not expecting the whole playbook, but how about a winning formula maybe you didnt see the score, we LOST.

That’s why chapdelaine only lasted 1 year in Edmonton, because the players couldn’t handle his abrasive style. Then again they were a team full of losers and losers can’t take criticism and make good of it. If the players can’t handle someone leaning on them to get better, then I don’t want them wearing green & white.

Who cares, it was an exhibition game to check out the new guys. Win or lose, it is what it is.

Anonymous said...

You think "read plays faster" is actually somthing that bad??

You myst be 20 years old and expect to have everything spoon-fed to you.

That is normal coaching and isn't anywhere near being described as abrasive.

Now, if he would have said "what the hell is wrong with you?" or "get your shit together!"......then i think maybe you could describe that as abrasive.

"Read plays faster"!!! Haha, somtimes i can't believe what i read on here.

I think you just made my point as to why Edmonton was in the toilet while coached by the chipmunk

"Read blogs faster"!!! Haha, then proceed to get the hell off here.

Its just one game we will see after at least 2 games and they need to pay theses guys i think that is terrible they don't get monies for there hard work that's crazy
