RIDERS LOSE A COACH

The Mike Sinclair era is over for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.  Less than two months after being hired as the Riders' new defensive line coach, Sinclair has bolted Regina to become an assistant defensive line coach with Marc Trestman's Chicago Bears.  Here's the story from espnchicago.com:

- "CHICAGO -- Chicago has finalized a deal to bring in former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Mel Tucker for the same position with the Bears.

The news came on a day in which the Bears hired former New York Jets assistant Matt Cavanaugh as quarterbacks coach.

The Bears also announced the hirings of Andy Bischoff and Michael Sinclair as their tight ends coach and assistant defensive line coach, respectively. Both Bischoff and Sinclair coached under new coach Marc Trestman with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL.

The Bears' coaching staff on defense now consists of Tucker, secondary coaches Jon Hoke and Gil Byrd, and defensive line coach Mike Phair. The team still must add a linebackers coach to take over for the recently fired Bob Babich."

It's mildly annoying that people get let out of contracts this easily but don't get me wrong, good for Sinclair, good for Trestman, etc. I wish them well.

Good for Sinclair, bad for Chamblin and the Riders.

Better a mid January departure than jumping ship in the spring!

but but but why would he leave the Riders? We have the Grey Cup this year and the Riders want all of the Coaches to work year round for a bout a quarter of the pay he'd be getting in the NFL:)

Okay, so he went for more money and the NFL. Hire coaches who "realistically" will stay here for their contract term and truly want to be here, maybe guys like Cherkas, Jurasin, Aldag, etc.

This was the best thing to happen for CFL Assistants in a long time. The hours they put in are gruelling, and the trade off in the CFL game was lifestyle. To ask guys to work year round for nothing extra well you saw Dickenson and Sinclair tell them what they can do with that scenario. Bottom line is if you want guys to put in the time then start paying the going rate. The going rate my friends just went up, and that is a good thing.

Cherkas, Jurasin and Aldag? You can't in any realm of reasonability be serious.

Regarding contracts if a guy were to be offered an NFL job and the CFL team didn't let him out of his existing contract I gurantee the Coach would say see you later, sue me, and good luck finding a quality replacement. People go to organizations where they can have a chance to win and move their careers forward. Wettenhal sounded magnanimus letting Trestman go to Chicago. It was in his contract so it was happening whether Wettenhal agreed or not.

Shut up Obama! Go Bobby Jurasin.

Don't kid yourself Obama... im sure the coaches saw extra pay for working more.

Obama - its not about the going rate. Its pretty simple, the economic difference between the CFL and NFL are too great to retain people who have the opportunity to go to the NFL. Way back in the day, before the US national TV contracts got huge, the CFL could get the Joe Theismanns', Johnny Rodgers' etc. No way those guys comes up here anymore.

Good luck to Marc Trestman. Wish him the best.

Where are the Riders saying they want assistants here year round? Dickenson had two and a half months off between mid November and end of January....seems pretty fair to me if Chamblin wanted him here at that point. Every other pro league expects the same or more. So get off this "indentured servitude" spin that people are trying to put on this. You make a salary to be here when your HC wants you to be here - if two and a half months is not good enough to rest then I totally agree it is time to move on. And lets remember that these guys make decent coin in return - at least $100k to work for 9.5 months per year - pretty sweet if you ask me.

Obama, you are so out of touch its not even funny. Coaches get paid better in the NFL, no doubt, but you come on here spouting off like they get paid peanuts in Canada. the reality is they get paid better coaching for 8 months than any the average Regina citizen working 9-5 mon to fri. If they don't like the gig, get out.

Joe Thiesman and Johhnny Rogers wouldn't come up here now only because they are each in their 60s. Doug Flutie and Jeff Garcia when they needed a job sure made their way up here. Same deal went for David Archer and Kerwin Bell. Dave Dickenson was 3 games short of an NFL pension, and he was up here too. Marc Trestman was making more as an NFL Coordinator than as a Head Coach when he came to the CFL. He came up here because he was tired of being passed over, it wasn't about money, and he wanted the opportunity to be a Head Coach. The bottom line is if you want to play or you want to work these guys will go where they can get a job in football.

On a separate note with Flutie, Archer, Bell, Dickenson even Henry Burris with his reentry to the CFL the TV contract and sponsorship was nowhere near what it is today.

What I have always liked about people leaving the CFL to go to the NFL is they use it for an opportunity to move onto bigger and better. On the flip side you have guys that love the CFL game, lifestyle, and are still playing in a strong quality league. When guys move on it just opens the door for more quality people to move up here.

Jim Fassel took his team to a Super Bowl, and never got a sniff as a Head Coach in the NFL again. I am thinking Fassel in Montreal would be a really interesting fit to replace Marc Trestman.

For those of you saying that the Coaches are not being paid for working the off season. Maybe you can show me a copy of thaeir contract that you have. You must have read their contract and know for a fact they are not being paid for the extra time. Otherwise you wouldnt be so naive to write such a bold statement... right?
If you look at Craig Dickenson's comments as to why he bolted. It was never mentioned that money had anything to do with it. Craig had made other commitments in the off season that he needed to honor.
Dont think for a second that the coaches are being forced to do something over and above their contract with out recieving pay. Thats just ludicrous!

Paid in Regina

Just hire Jurasin now. He's a man who wants to be here and not chase these stupid NFL dreams

Anonymous said...

That's right Clay you captured it perfectly. Saskatchewan is the place to be and why let pesky dreams and ambitions get in the way. What could be better than being here on a -32 windchill day in January.

Adieu, Mr.Sinclair.

Anonymous said...

How about wanting to be here. Did you listen to Neil Hughes speak this week?

Anonymous said...

While you cant blame a guy for taking this opportunity, its not a great thing that we sign a guy less than a month aqo and he bolts. Like to see the coaches honor their contracts, particularly in this instance.

The cold must freezer burn some peoples brains

Bobby J as Dline coach - are you kidding me!?

Lets bring back Elgaard to coach receivers, Aldag to coach OL, Tim McCray as RB coach, Tom Burgess as OC and QB coach, Eddie Lowe to coach LB’ers, put Hall back to DB’s coach and let Ridgeway coach the special teams while we’re at it. Bring back the hero’s of some of the crappiest teams the Riders have ever fielded and have them show the current generation of players “The Rider Way”. Yes lets go back to the good ol’ days and celebrate some 1980’s nostalagia right, what could go wrong with that?

89 was a great year!

Nothing wrong with someone moving on to better their situation, move back to their own country or whatever. Something any person in any field of work would do if the opportunity arose. Why are Rider coaches and players held to a different standard?

Anonymous said...

This tells me the quality of players and staff Chamblin is bringing to Riders.

We are in good hands!!!

Shut up obama!!!!!!!!!!

& this is why players & coaches look else where before considering to play for the Riders, cuz the fans here r just flat out retarded...most knowledgeable fans in the CFL my ass, just a bunch of homers who think they know football.

Im the 1st to admit i cheer for the riders but im not so arogant to realise that this is a business & everyone (players & coaches) look out for #1 1st & believe me thats not the fans lmao

Anonymous said...

Neil Hughes as a matter of fact wants to be here because where else is he going? Not to take anything away from him, as he's a nice guy. However I have said this for many years. Canadians play their way off the roster while Americans play their way on. Chris Szarka was washed up about 3 years before they dumped him, but they only dumped him when they were for sure certain Hughes could replace him. It's for that reason Sisco will be on the opening day roster too.

Anonymous said...

N.H. should have retired, diminished role on green/white team. rider management need draft/scout/develope/work new young can/am talent for immediate roster replacement year after year, sentimental value has no place in professional sports. keep the roster under 30yrs.

Anonymous said...

Then you have to blame management for the resignings - not the players or fans.
And Chamblin does not strike me as the sentimental type.

OH-BAH-MAH!!! OH-BAH-MAH!!! OH-BAH-MAH!!! OH-BAH-MAH!!!

As a Bears/Riders fan I have mixed feelings but mostly I like the move. The Riders will find another coach. I think Coach Chamblin is good at his job and will be south in a few years anyway.

Anonymous said...

I don't know why so many folks can not understand why it is so dumb to have a special teams coach working in January. The special teams spots are usually filled up in the last couple of days of training camp. (he won't know who 70% of his special teams players will be for almost another 6 months)

Lets just say Jurasin's reputation is of not being able to get along with a certain segment of the dressing room population when he was a player. Is it true? I dont know, but have heard it from some pretty good sources. If it is true, he would alienate a big part of the team. Ill riddle you to figure it out, with one clue. im not talking about the kickers.

Anonymous said...

Jurasin was an ego maniac and he was in it for himself. He was a great individual player, but a lot of I statements. Kent Austin was similar, but humbled himself. Bobby hasn't done that, and as a Head Coach you couldn't trust him. In a hierachy you think he's going to take Defensive orders from Richie Hall? Come on, and he could have played circles around Corey Chamblin so it's not going to happen. There are so many CFL teams, and a bunch of colleges in Michigan. Other than his alma mater he hasn't had a single job outside of that place.
