LET THE AUSTIN SPECULATION BEGIN

Less than an hour after the firing of Coach/GM George Cortez in Hamilton on Tuesday, speculation began that former Rider coach Kent Austin will be his replacement.   Here's a sample of what's being said in the media:

ALLAN MAKI, THE GLOBE AND MAIL

"Just who will become Hamilton’s sixth head coach in nine years had the CFL alive in speculation. On the GM side, personnel director Joe Womack and even head U.S. scout Danny McManus are in-house possibilities. (The Edmonton Eskimos named former scout Ed Hervey as their new GM last Monday.)

As for coaching candidates, there are some who are presently out of work (Paul LaPolice, Greg Marshall) and others employed elsewhere in the league. Calgary Stampeders offensive co-ordinator Dave Dickenson, who played under Cortez, drew immediate attention, but later confirmed he is not interested in applying for any head coaching job this off-season.

The man who is certain to generate speculation, because he always does whenever a coaching position opens, is Kent Austin. The former Grey Cup-winning quarterback and coach is presently the head coach at Cornell University.

“We’re under no timeline,” Ticats President Scott Mitchell said when asked when the Ticats wanted a GM and head coach in place. “Hamilton’s gone from a place where people didn’t want to be, to a place where everybody wants to be. We’re going to be talking to good people.”
_____

DREW EDWARDS, HAMILTON SPECTATOR

"Candidates could include current TSN analyst Duane Forde, former Edmonton general manager Eric Tillman and current Cornell head coach Kent Austin, who led Saskatchewan to a Grey Cup in 2007 and spent 10 years as a CFL quarterback. Experienced coaches — Austin could potentially fill both roles — include former Winnipeg Blue Bombers head man Paul LaPolice and former Ticats defensive co-ordinator Greg Marshall.

This will be the second general manager and third head coach hired since Mitchell joined the club in January 2007.

“We’ve made some progress through the years but not nearly enough and I take responsibility for that,” Mitchell said."
_____

DAVE NAYLOR, TSN

"Does Kent Austin want to leave Cornell for the CFL?  Don't know.  But here's a quote from him after Cornell's final game this season: 'The frustration level is about as high as it's ever been for me since I've been here.'"
_____

What will the Rider Nation's reaction be if Austin winds up running the Ticats in 2013 and leads them into Mosaic Stadium for the Grey Cup?  Fire away in the comments section.

I think the negative "Austin, Austin" chants will be similar to when he returned to Taylor Field in 1994 with the Lions.

Zero percent chance he leave College for Hamilton coach / GM job. It's a step down. Also if he didnt leave for the Riders job he doesnt leave for Cats.

Until I see him at a podium wearing a Ti-Cats hat, I won't buy into the fact that he is returning to the CFL. It makes no sense for him to come back when he had the perfect return in 07. Get in, win and get out.

He was very unhappy with this past season. Went public with his feelings. It's possible.

Finally, something for all you nut jobs to slobber over.

Nut job slobber coment:::: Move to another Province so we don't have to read asshole comments like yours on here. This is for football comments, not inmature , babyish comments like yours.

I think Austin makes the next progression...Assistant coach in the NFL.
Quarterbacks seem to make great coaches...Danny McManus would be a dandy!

I would have no problem with Kent Austin coming back to the CFL with any team. We need more quality coaches to make the league even better. Austin owes the Riders and their fans nothing. However, I do not believe he is coming back. A better college job, maybe, an NFL ass't, maybe.

Austins record at Cornell was something like 7/13 over 3 years, not award winning and not likely to attract an NFL job. CFL could be a real option.
Why do Rider fans get upset if a former player or coach comes back with another team? Are we that insecure? I for one would welcome Austin back to the CFL not boo him.
Go Riders

Wish he was the GM of the Riders.

Anonymous said...

Tell me Anonymous. Why do you wish he was GM of the Riders? Are you just one of these idiotic trolls that make comments like that to stir it up or are you just that stupid?

Please tell me what Brendan Taman has done to exact that statement from you? Was bringing in the likes of Kory Sheets, Joe Lobendahn, Tyrone Brackenridge amongst others and a coach who is on the verge of doing some great things.

Please enlighten me you stupid sack of cowdung.

I think Coach Chamblin and Taman have done a great job. I like them to be honest,

Anonymous said...

Wow, someone forgot they're meds this morning. Cowdung? Well! I never!

Anonymous said...

Austin might have been with the Riders last year if it wasn't for 1 person in power and I think we all know who it is.

Anonymous said...

To Cowdung; Do you mean the same Brendan Taman who can't find one DE let alone two of them???

Full autonomy of football operations, President/Gm/Head Coach might entice. Can't see Kent Austin working for anyone who would undermine his work and on field program, starting over with hand picked personnel with no carry overs from past administrations.

If Rider legend Kent Austin does get the Hamilton GM job, good chance his first hire will be the unemployed Eric Tillman as his head scout. Also, he can probably entice Ken Miller to be his offensive coordinator.

Kent will be looking at other colleges in the USA first and foremost. There are openings in the SEC in which he can apply for. If there is no SEC, Big 10, or NFL position coach option, Pac 12 or other college division then he might consider the CFL again. Seems like a long shot.

Give me a break with the negative Austin chants... What gives here honestly!

Saskatchewan Roughriders have been in existance for over 100 years, they only have 3 Grey Cups, two of those cups are a direct result of Kent Austin by way as starting QB or Head Coach... would anyone really hold something against him by saying that if he ever decided to come to the CFL, we somehow have rights over him and he is not allowed to explore his own career in a free market economy. Get a grip... if anything someone should be writing that man a thank-you letter and wishing him all the best and to thank him for his lasting contribution to the Saskatchewan Roughrider organization.

This is a terrible and distasteful debate.

If anyone knows or understands US College football, you will also understand that there is way too much opportunity down there, especially once you have reached the Head coaching position, to consider stepping out and heading back to Canada.

If Austin was not happy at Cornell, believe me someone else down there will snap him up... he was an Offensive Co-ordinator in the SEC, and now a Head Coach in the Ivy League... Look, I love the CFL, but Kent Austin is not coming back here as he is on his way to the top... Have you seen the salary's for head coaches in the NCAA???

speakin of cowdung...myers(grinch) n pederson r perhaps takin their talents(albeit very limited for duke) down to southbeach next yr! congrats to george cortez on capitalizing n cashin in on a 4 yr deal!

I suspect that if he had no interest in Saskatchewan, he has no interest in the CFL.

I don't see him getting a good job in the NFL right now, but I never knew that's what he wanted. A lot of college gigs in major conferneces are just as good as an NFL job, some are maybe better, and a lot of assistant coaching jobs at BCS schools are better than head coach at Cornell.

Just saying if he's burned out on Cornell there are a lot of jobs that would be a lot of fun in addition to Ham, unless Ham has bags of $$.

The Woz said...

The guy is something like 8-16 at Cornell so why does everyone assume that other colleges in the states would be clamouring to hire him if he was available? The guy had one good year as a HC with the Riders using a team that was set up by Shivers and Barrett and has done nothing since. Good chance that Cornell might can his butt for that matter - unless they enjoy losing. If Cornell still wants him why would he leave when his kids get a free college education at an Ivy League school?? I just wish once and for all that he would come out and say that he has no intention of returning to the CFL as long as he is at Cornell and his kids are in school. This annual Kent Austin trivial pursuit game is getting boring.

Mike from Vita, MB said...

As long as Kent is HC @ Cornell, the kids get a free ride as students. The tuition for the offspring would be insane.

Woz: You can always take another break. Nobody is forcing you to read the remarks section. Most of us enjoy the "Trivial Pursuit" game.

Woz - The keyword here is "trivial".

Anonymous said...

Idiot troll, stupid sack of cowdung,-wow.-who is this literate and intelligent person? Better still, why was this sick individual allowed to include his nonsense?

The Woz said...

Good idea about taking a break - when I left the topic was Austin and a year later you are still talking about Austin. Better things to do so you win. Smell ya later.

If he were going to be offered an NFL job or high profile NCAA position it would have happened after his time with Ole Miss. He's coaching in front of less than 2000 fans a game.

Kent Austin is best served coming back to where he is a genious, and can have complete control of a program.

If Hamilton gives him full control they will be a bonafide contender.

See, nut jobs like Woz surface along with all the other children. Just like I called it.

Last years search for gm of Sk. Roughriders and consequent hire of current gm. Why would anyone with the football acumen and stature of Mr. K. Austin work under someone who has never played the game and does not have the necessary connections in football circles to build a winning club and has a overall losing record to his resume. Mr.Austin should have been offered and enticed with full autonomy of all football operations at Sk.

Kent Austin, with his take charge, no nonsense approach with his accumulated football knowledge would be a good hire for any CFL club Interested In acquiring his services. Giving him full responsibility of club operations on and off the field would surely result In long term stability and a winning franchise.Tiger Cats and the CFL In for a tumultuous 2013-14 season with no permanent home stadium thus creating problems for all Involved.

Kent Austin a proven bonafide winner In the CFL.

Fascinating to read how wrong the predictions were.

And Saskatchewan now owes Austin three Cups...
