THE MONDAY MORNING GOALIE

POSTCARDS FROM TORONTO...

The 100th Grey Cup is in the books and the Toronto Argonauts are 2012 CFL champions after a 35-22 rout of the Calgary Stampeders.  They're saying it was the longest Grey Cup in history, kicking off around 6:40 pm ET and including a 39-minute half-time show.  Congratulations to the Argos!  Who would have predicted Sunday's result?  Not many.   Here are some more photos:

The halftime show featuring Justin Bieber and friends.  Midway through the second quarter, Bieber was booed when his image was shown on the big screen promoting the upcoming mini-concert.  My radio partner Carm Carteri said, "Why are they booing the kid?  I like him!"

The streets around the Rogers Centre were blocked, and packed.  It gave an NFL-tailgating atmosphere...

With "The Duke' on the bridge crossing over to Rogers Centre.

There's a shot of one of two press box facilities at Rogers Centre.  It was jammed beyond capacity..

The two local radio crews (QR77 Calgary and Team 1050 Toronto) were allowed to broadcast the Grey Cup outside of the national radio broadcast for the first time since 2007.  Here's a shot of the Stamps radio booth...

Earlier on Grey Cup Sunday we enjoyed the Spurs-Raptors double overtime thriller at Air Canada Centre...

Here's a pic from Ford Field in Detroit on Thursday where Nathan Morrison and Jeff Armstead shot down to for the Lions and Texans.  Click on the photo and see if you can spot Darian Durant!

Our hotel, the Delta Chelsea, had this robot roaming around and greeting hotel guests.  It had to have been run from a remote location because he was making comments to various Rider fans, Stamps fans, Bomber fans, etc. about their teams...

Sportsnet's Arash Madani stopped by our radio show on Thursday...

Our friends from the 620 CKRM Rider Pep Band stopped by and performed on the show as well!

More various Toronto photos...

The hub of the whole week - the Fairmont Royal York.

A CFL display in a local grocery store..

For the Leafs fans...

You may find this hard to believe, because I did, but the Westin Harbour Castle flew a Rider flag outside the hotel during Grey Cup week until it either got stolen or ripped down.  The Westin was the site of the Riderville luncheon on Friday...

The 620 CKRM Roughrider cheer team was on hand for the luncheon presented by SaskCanola...

Our good friend Larry from Edenwold poses with Rider fullback Graham Bell..

The Riders' Reid Lambden and Brendon Labatte.  Speaking of Riders, happy birthday today to Rider defensive tackle Keith Shologan and to Regina's Jon Ryan of the Seattle Seahawks!!

Rider President Jim Hopson, his wife Brenda and Regina Mayor Michael Fougere at the luncheon..

More Rider staff.  From left: Mark Habicht, Steve Mazurak and Craig Reynolds...

Funnyman Steve Patterson provided the entertainment.  He was very good...

A shot of the room....

Perhaps the lone man in the room from Quebec won the door prize draw for a Grey Cup 2013 jersey...

Rider DB Eddie Russ was on hand to sign autographs and pose with fans...

Riders Assistant GM Jeremy O'Day chats with Graham Bell...

Rider GM Brendan Taman...

Local talk radio king Bob McGowan is promoted on downtown billboards....

Fans from Laval were in town to cheer on their team in the Vanier Cup.  Here are some shots from HOOPS sports bar downtown....

These fans would have been happy after Sunday's result...

The great Kevin Gallant....

On the radio with Jeff Armstead in the CN Tower, along with Dave Ash...

Two-time Blue Bomber Grey Cup champ David Black stopped by for a visit....

George Yannitsos of the Four Seasons Sports Palace...

Rider great Don Narcisse gets in on some autograph action!

A shot of the Harvard Broadcasting hospitality suite at the Sheraton...

And lastly a shot of the 2012 CFL Gibson's Finest Reporter of the Year, Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette.  When he accepted the award at Sunday morning's Football Reporters of Canada annual breakfast, Herb said "You guys finally got it right."

Congratulations also to the Hamilton Spectator's Steve Milton and Dan Ralph of the Canadian Press for being inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame's media wing.

Thanks again Rod for all your outstanding coverage!!Great for the Argos to win in their own back Yard!! Great Exposure for the CFL in Canada's biggest markekplace. The half time show was not great for me personally but It may have planted a seed in the younger generation of up and coming CFL fans. Somebody has to take over from us oldtimers.. Great marketing.. I have been to 4 great Cups and I just don't think I could handle 4-5 days of that much fun any longer. Polkabill from Regina

I'm so happy that Justin Bieber proved he is a national treasure. An amazing performance from Canada's brightest star. Justin Bieber is Elvis. He is The Beatles and he is ours. In tears of joy over his amazing performance.

Really, the Beib's was booed in his own backyard ??? I guess I might boo him too if my girl and every woman around me was screaming and eyehumping him. Jealousy makes people do weird things! LOL

Great pics of Toronto during Grey Cup week. There was a definite buzz in the city all week and the local Toronto media was making the Grey Cup events their top story, not just during their sportscasts, but even in their newscasts.

Have to correct you on the Primetime Sports host - his name is Bob McCown, with a 'c'. As a Rogers-owned pro-NFL station, they were about the only Toronto media outlet that tried to play down the Grey Cup. Even though McCown and co-host Stephen Brunt are supporters of the CFL, their bosses did their best to muzzle them and limit their amount of Grey Cup talk. With the Buffalo Bills pretty much out of the playoffs, it's funny that the Rogers radio ads promoting the December game between "Toronto's team in the NFL" and the Seattle Seahawks are focusing on the reduced pricing on seats and the halftime show featuring PSY performing Gangnam Style rather than on the game itself.
