RIDER COACHING MOVES

From the Twitter feed of Sportsnet/Sportscage CFL Insider Arash Madani:

@arashmadani
BREAKING: Fallout from the #SskRoughriders playoff loss begins. Have learned DL coach Mike Walker & LB coach Alex Smith won't be back. #CFL

Don't expect the #SskRoughriders (or any #CFL team) to announce any coaching or personnel changes until after Grey Cup. League news blackout in effect.

Ritchie Hall should of been the very first person fired in this organization then Mike Walker. Another year of having to watch a Hall defence makes me sick to my stomach

Never know, with Hall's two lieutenants gone perhaps he's next on the chopping block. Guess we'll see.

Changes while always debated, are just part of the game!

I don't think Hall will be let go. If so, he would have been the first to go... you would want to have a new DCoord and then let that person have input into the new coaches. So the fact that Walker and Smith will not be back, tells me that Hall likely was unimpressed with their coaching.

--------
I would suggest that if this is the case, then Hall better get it together real quick as he can't keep looking for scapegoats; sooner or later it will have to be him that takes the fall.

Hall needs to go.

Alex Smith was kind of shocking news as he is a good local bred coach, they should have retired him. Richie Hall should have been let go.

He had the number two defence in the league. Anything more to say?

Given that this is not really an announcement....its a tweet....I wonder if Alex Smith and Mike Walker are retiring....I beleive Smith has to be older than 65 maybe close to 70...His time with the Riders dates back beyond that of Richie.....I also detest so called fans dumping Richie....his connection to this franchise spans close to 20 years if not more....and he deserves considerable more respect than these so called fans are giving...Ron Lancaster was booed in his last game here and you idiots continue your classless attitude. I beleive Cory and Brendan will do what needs to be done to make our team better.

I may be mistaken but Hall was in his last yr of his contract I believe so technically the Riders can go find another DC if they want or extend Hall's contract.

Having the #2 rated defense means nothings. Stats are for losers. We're at home while other "lsser" defenses are still playing. If you can't stop the other team in big games or at crucial time, it means nothing. The loss of Walker and Smith is as vanilla as it gets. Totally insignificant. It's all about making plays at crunch time. That's usually when a Hall defense crunches, usually in the sheets.

Also don't forget that Richie Hall and Alex Smith are best friends so Richie would not dump him, there's more story to it. They both are long time Riders and deserve better respect.

To the guy or gal that said Richie had the 2nd best defence in the league. I'll bet the home quarter that Richie's defence gave up more second and longs than any other two defences...combined. Nuff said he's gotta go.

The Riders need to keep Richie Hall! Rob Vanstone's comments in his column about the Rider defense and coach Hall were right on the money.

The defense needs an upgrade in talent. It is the players who make the plays, not the coach.

As always, a vocal few continue to froth at the mouth when it comes to their dislike of Richie Hall. There are few defensive coordinators available with Richie's knowledge and experience.

I and many other fans hope to see Richie back on the Rider coaching staff in 2013 and believe he can help get us to the Grey Cup (again).

Second best defence isn't good enough? Richie deserves to stay. I'm surprised about Alex ... but he is ready to retire, I am sure. Mike Walker deserves to move on ... our d-line has not been good enough for two years. I'd like to see them, rather, I'd LOVE to see Bobby Jurasin hired to coach our d-line.

There's a reason why you idiots are in here posting and not making football decisions.

Richie Hall is a very good defensive coordinator and if he wasn't then he would be gone. It's not like these guys keep him around because he is bad. Give your head a shake.

I'm obviously not the guy that is going to make major football decisions either but to me, the Stampeders are a much more experienced team than the riders. A young player made a mistake and it's Richie Hall's inabilities as a DC that are at fault?

It's so old hat for everyone on here to come in and slam Richie Hall that each and every post has LOST ALL CREDIBILITY.

Whether you like him or not, you simply are just looking for someone to blame. So, keep tossing the blame here and feel better but realize that it's just that, meaningless and ZERO CREDIBILITY.

Gm Is totally responsible for assembling this football club on the field of play along with scouting personnel. Head coach and his assistants can only make due with what Is provided In talent and don't play the onfield game, If the talent Is not consistent on both offence and defence and a losing season results, then you have a problem that the Roughriders organization must address with the Director of Operations and the Gm with appropriate accorded action. If that means releasing people of their responsibilities, then so be It. Status quo of a losing professional football franchise unacceptable.

The Globe and Mail has a great Grey Cup series on former CFL players - 'where are they now'. Friday's article about Dan Keply was excellent. Love the story how he dealt with a defensive player who was bringing the team down.

The def was second best in league the offense was the worst. Dtrange how changes are made???

Bobby would be a wonderful dline coach. If he will take it go get it done

And so the scape goats shall fall. The gm Is responsible for the overall 2012 edition of the on field product.

Think Huffer plans on firing Rick Campbell after the season? Seems to me his defence let the Riders score a TD in all of about 35 seconds when they needed a stop to win as well....

Everyone trumpets Bobby J as the next potential D-line coach every time the current model is relieved of duties. What some fail to understand is that maybe said "perfect coaches", have no desire to be a part of the Rider organization.

I know of one ex-player who recently confided that he would never accept a coaching position, plaza nomination or even want to be a part of the organization.

Some players left on certain terms and while they might be perfect coaches......perhaps they'd be perfect coaches somewhere else first. I know that's a difficult one for some Rider fans to accept.

KA should have been given a very serious offer by Saskatchewan Roughriders Football Club Board of Directors with full autonomy/control of the team with the title of President of operations/Gm/Head Coach when the search for Ken Miller's replacement was conducted or not conducted. This kind of offer would have been more then enough Incentive to seriously consider working In Saskatchewan long term and building a championship team that would consistently vie for the Grey Cup title and win year after year. Working under the current Gm who has never played the game and has no connections or Influence In football circles very apparent for all to see with his factual losing record, not a option to anyone who has unquestionable reputable credentials on one's resume. Why would anyone jepordise their professional career when they could personally have a mandate and know what It takes to get the job done. If 2013 season does not materialize winning results, please find a person capable of the responsibility. This current direction absolutely unacceptable with no continual consistency.for the foreseeable future, just wait and see. Let the blind gullible rants begin.

If Corey could put up with Bobby J saying I this or I that when something good happens, and eventually undermining Richie. Maybe it's changed because going back to their playing days Bobby J clearly wouldn't stand there and tell you Richie Hall was the reason their Defense was so good. There are how many CFL teams and how many Colleges in Michigan and how many have called to hire Bobby J? Chew on that one.

Second best D???????

We lost to a QB who had not played all year, had a concussion and a broken arm.

Yikes, we need changes or losing seasons will continue.

The coaches could have just said they won't be back, let's not get ahead of ourselves. There were many games when our defensive backs were in fantastic coverage but got burnt by their decision making on the field. This has nothing to do with how they were coached. Eventually the player learns from his mistakes or he loses his job. If the coaches were guilty of anything it was having faith in their players. This was a frustrating year because we saw the best and the worst in our team all season, next year will be a much more consistent team. Hopefully most of our coaches will return to see the improvements these players make.

Drew Tate was a genius decision by John Hufnagel. Saskatchewan had seen Kevin Glenn three times this season and had him cased I'm sure. We were ready for him. Drew Tate brought a fresh look to the team and he had something to prove. It isn't the first time that a hurt player played on pure adrenaline in a big game. The Riders played the same game they've played all season, flashes of greatness and flashes of mediocrity and flashes of stupidity, all signs of a team of the future.

Why is it that only the people with virtually no footall knowledge continue to take up space on this otherwise great blog. What? You don't think they are aware of their ignorance?

Hall is the king of the prevent defence, soft coverage, predictable send the 2nd down d package lb (ferri or McCullough) on an ineffectual blitz.

Now look at Chris jones. EE scored first drive, he changed up brought pressure every play and Joseph could not get anything done. And no precictable pressure, shut sometimes a cb, dab etc.

Forget the stats, Hall's d craps the bed in crunch time.

Anonymous said...

hall must go. 4th quarters and second and long is all that matters. All other stats are fluf. Smith was over his head. Jurasin is bad news and a notorious red neck who would not get along with the diverse. We will leave it at that. Richie has failed in almost every big game.

fire the the bc defense they were the number 1 in the CFL .
