STAMPEDERS 36 ROUGHRIDERS 30

CALGARY - Quarterback Drew Tate recovered from getting his "bell rung'' to marshall the Calgary Stampeders to their first CFL playoff win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders since 1994.

Calgary's 36-30 victory over Saskatchewan in Sunday's West Division semifinal propels the Stampeders to the division final against the B.C. Lions. The victor in Vancouver next Sunday advances to the Grey Cup Nov. 25 in Toronto.

Tate hit Romby Bryant on a 68-yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds remaining in the semifinal. A two-point convert attempt failed, Stampeder kicker Rene Paredes booted the subsequent kickoff 90 yards and the visitors conceded a single point.

"I knew no one was going to catch him,'' Tate said. "I was just hoping the ball was going to be a good ball.''

The Roughriders had taken a 30-29 lead just 32 seconds before Bryant's heroics on a Darian Durant 24-yard throw to Gregg Carr.

Tate says he didn't remember much after taking a late helmet-to-helmet hit from Saskatchewan's Tearrius George early in the second quarter.

"I don't even remember the first half,'' Tate said. "I got my bell rung. All I remember is the second half.''

Tate rose to his feet slowly after the George hit. He was flattened later on the same drive by Shomari Williams, who was called for roughing the passer as George was.

Calgary's starting quarterback remained in the game and completed 22 of 36 pass attempts for 363 yards and two touchdown throws.

In his post-game comments, Stampeder coach and general manager John Hufangel said he unaware of Tate's mental state after the George hit. Tate insisted after the game that he wasn't concussed.

In the East Division, the Toronto Argonauts head to Montreal and meet the Alouettes in the division final Sunday. The Argos were 42-26 winners over the Edmonton Eskimos in the semifinal.

Calgary receiver Jabari Arthur scored his first career playoff touchdown and Calgary third-string quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell finished short-yardage plays for a pair of touchdowns. Paredes was good on attempts from 50 and 40 yards.

Stampeder running back Jon Cornish, a finalist for the CFL's most outstanding player award, finished with 109 rushing yards on 18 carries.

Kory Sheets and Carr each collected a pair of touchdown catches and Sandro DeAngelis added a field goal for the Roughriders.

Saskatchewan's Durant was 24-for-37 for 435 yards, four touchdown throws and two interceptions.

"Darian had a phenomenal game,'' Saskatchewan head coach Corey Chamblin said. "He gave us a chance to win that game.

"At the end we just had a defensive breakdown. We handed it away and that should never happen.''

Saskatchewan was a post-season stumbling block for the Stampeders in recent years, with four playoff wins over Calgary in five seasons between 2006 and 2010, and another back in 1997.

"If they were banking on history, they had another thing coming,'' Calgary defensive back Keon Raymond said. "It also feels good because out here, they beat us in 2009 and 2010. I was a part of that team and it's heartbreaking.

"It's always good to know we can win against them at home. If we can get that monkey off our back, try and make a run, that's who you want to go through.''

It was looking like another Roughrider post-season win at McMahon Stadium until Tate aired the ball out to Bryant.

The temperature at kickoff at McMahon was -2 C. Attendance was announced at 30,027.

The first and second halves ended with bunches of points - 14 with 52 seconds remaining in the second and 13 with 12 seconds to go in the first.

In the wild conclusion to the first half, Calgary's Fred Bennett ran 96 yards back for a rare defensive two-point convert after Raymond blocked a Saskatchewan convert attempt. A 50-yard field goal from Paredes on the last play of the half gave the hosts a 19-16 lead.

Hufnagel announced earlier in the week that Tate would be his playoff starter, even though the Baytown, Texas, quarterback was sidelined 14 regular-season games with a shoulder dislocation and subsequent surgery on his non-throwing arm.

Backup Kevin Glenn went 9-5 in Tate's absence. Hufnagel went with Tate because of his athleticism.

Despite his foggy mental state, he scrambled out of trouble to make plays, including a 17-yard pass to Maurice Price in the third quarter when Tate was surrounded by green and white jerseys.

The University of Iowa product went 5-for-5 in passing for 68 yards on that scoring drive in the third quarter to make it 26-16.

"He managed the game well,'' Hufnagel said. "You saw some things he can do, making some plays out of nothing. We all need to play better that week and Drew is one of them.''

Calgary won some tight games this season en route to a 12-6 record and second in the division. Three ended with the opposition missing field goals on the last play. The Stampeders won another in overtime in Regina.

"How many games have we won within the last minute, clutch field goals and things like that?'' Raymond asked. "That's the kind of team we are. A team of character.

"If there's time on the clock, we still have an opportunity and we showed that tonight.''

The Roughrider season was one of high highs and low lows. They opened this season 3-0, lost five in a row, went 5-1 and then finished on a four-game losing streak to finish 8-10.

"It's a young team. We have to come back stronger next year,'' Chamblin said. "Sometimes those lessons turn you into a veteran team.''

what a bunch of losers. can't even put a convert on the board.

This football team is a joke. Can't even win, when they're winning. No talent. No brains. Watch for more jokes and chokes in the second half folks.

Why the hell do you people even cheer for the Riders? Just go away.

Chris said...

This is a poor team, going to sleep at the end of the half like that. Poorly coached.....lazy players. Chamblin, this is your team??????? Wake the hell up!!!!!! You wants this game more, unfortunately not us, total lack of motivation on both sides of the ball, especially on defence. Second half = two turnovers by Durant and only 3 points. Go home .....turn the lights out.

Is Cory Chamblin auditioning In the dressing room for American Idol ? "Hit im In the mouth"
" Hit im the mouth" looking like a fool with ur pants on the ground .Isn't that Illegal and dangerous to Instruct your players to hit your opposing opponents In the mouth ???? Saskatchewan Roughriders sure didn't like It when DD was" Hit In the mouth" and left spitting out blood a few weeks back.

This team needs upgrades at OC,DC QB and WR. Taj Smith couldn't catch a cold in a phone booth.

Now that the game is over, let the ranting & raving begin. Fire the Gm, coach, all the assistants, trade DD. Heck, let's fire Gainer too. Notice the sarcasm. Bottom line that was a barn burner. Could have went either way. KEEP THINGS STABLE! IF you get rid of a bunch of people you have no hope of doing better next season. If you need a good example to follow study the way things have gone for the Steelers the last 48 years. And I mean study closely! If you do you will know what I mean.

This team finds new ways to loose every stinking year. How can you not know the play will be a deep ball??? That DB should be released before the plane ride home.

What else is new as another typical Ritchie Hall 4 qtr defence costs us the game. Also Halls before halftime D costed us too. Hopefully Hall applys for and gets the Edmonton GMs job.

Wow! I truly cannot believe the simple-mindedness of some of these comments from "loyal Rider fans"!I cannot wait for 2013. This team is on the rise and showed a lot of character and moxy today. Let's be proud of where we are today compared to how we finished last year. Keep the faith everyone. Let the lunatics have their voice with their anonymous comments on this blog because no one listens to them when they speak out loud!Go Riders and be proud of our team's effort today.

Tate was throwing bombs all day so why bite on the pump fake when the other receiver was covered and let your man go?

Drew overcomes a blatant helmet to helmet cheap shot to have a monster game!! Stamps head to Vancouver and the Riders head home. You're welcome Canada!

A great game. The anti DD crowd has no logical reason to blame him. Getzlaf cut the heart of of two potential drives with easy drops. The game shouldn't have been this close. DD played a great game. Rider Nation deserved better.

If you're not riled after a mistake filled showing like that, I submit, that YOU are not a real fan and head on back to your green soother.

Here is your synopis:

Take away the wins vs Winnipeg and Hamilton you have a 5 win season. The talent is not on the roster. There are honourable mentions, but not enough to win championshps or host home playoff games. This always comes down to Canadians and the Riders fall way short in that department. Getzlaf all year he dropped the ball, but in CFL he will not be replaced until you find another Canadian. He's not going anywhere.

Today the loss specifically was all on Coaching. When you have that much time on the clock and leave 1 minute then don't go into a prevent defense whose fault is that? All game Tate tried to make that deep pass and with 1 minute left what do you think he was going to try? That's on Dyce for Offense and Hall for Defense. Chamblin is overated, but he can only use what he's given and he wasn't given much this year.

Anyway like I said in the preseason it'll be 8-10 and out in the first round. Life moves on now as The Walking Dead is on, and you guys can always find a Storage Wars marathon on TV.

See yah all in the Spring.

Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Browns, Toronto Maple Leafs, Saskatchewan Roughriders. What do these 4 teams have in common?

Anonymous said...

Granted that was a hard way to lose. However Lobo, Willis, Brackenridge, Krohmar, Carr, Taj Smith, Sheets, Alford, Labate, Heenan, Pacard were all players that were not here last year. Add Coach Chamblin to the list as well and I would say Taman did a great job and so did the Vets like Dressler and DD. We were last place last season. This was a successful season. I stings now but we are young and will find ways to win tight games. Show the team you're behind them and show your Rider Pride.

Anonymous said...

OK..so it wasn't Getzlaf's and it wasn't Durant's fault. There are two teams on the field and they aren't going to let the Riders do whatever they want.

Maybe they need some upgrades but if we fire the, DC, OC and cut our receivers and QB, everyone here will be complaining when we are 5-13 again.

It was a great game and we should've won but didn't. Guess what...sun comes up tomorrow so let's move on.

Very, very frustrating! Durant could have had hit 500 yards save for the drops, and would have had a heroic win, save for the blown coverage at the end. Team sport, team loss... should be a great season in 2012 due to the evolution of the team since training camp. At least in 2012, the Riders can do like the Lions and focus on excellence rather than evaluation new talent at so many positions.

It's embarassing to read these comments from fans - but then again - most of them aren't. Riders did just about enough to win - it hurts for now - but a few new pieces next year and they'll be alright. As far as Stamp and Lion trolls - take a hike!

I want to address the people who keep wanting to take away wins, weel here is some new math for you:

If you take away the losses from the Calgary and Edmonton losses (where we should have been 5-0 to start the season) we are really at least a 10-8 team.

That was a good season, much improved over last year. Yes I am disappointed in the loss but hey we were in it.

GO RIDERS!!

Just like in the Danny Barrett era, Richie Hall’s defense once again couldn’t shut the door in the dying minutes when needed.

When will the Riders finally realize that he is the problem with the defense?

Anonymous said...

How much longer are we going to be handicapped by having Richie Hall on the payroll? The only thing he's won was against Ryan Dinwiddie in his first ever start. When Danny Maciocca was foolish enough to hire him I thought we were rid of him and we won the west both years that Richie was gone. Then as soon as Edmonton saw the light and canned him Hopson ran off Etch and rehired Richie. We changed up the entire staff this year but kept Richie. WHY? He's a left over from the Danny Barrett era and why would we want that? The only change today's team needs is to get rid of Richie Hall.

Will any current board of directors from this community owned professional football franchise step forward and address the public fanbase regarding future direction of this club anytime soon, or Is everything status quo after another losing season on the field of play. This whole organization has to be just as disappointed as the fans are with only 3.championships to show for In It's storied CFL history. 2013 Grey Cup, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Anonymous said...

This was a crappy 8-10 team that had no real right being in a playoff game. and would have never got by BC even if we had fluked out a win. We didn't make a stop all game long when we had them 2nd and long. Our DB's have been a weak link all year with no upgrades. Our systems of playing off 15 yards was consistent.

DD had a good game but ultimately we scored 30 points but gave up 36. It all about defense. 30 points on the road should win you most games if you had a real defense. We have done that all year and our defense continues to be our weal link. Hall's defenses have won very little over the years and he is grossly overrated. Maze, Patrick are yuk! Losing record, lost in semi-final, basically losers. Those who applaud this season and the work done are sick enablers, with kind of low self esteem.

Anonymous said...

This team has been in free fall since 2010 and in an 8 team league there is no such thing as a rebuild. It all comes down to who you know in order to bring in the talent. B.C.(Shivers), Montreal (Popp), Toronto (Barker) and Tillman's first year in Edmonton show you need top level management to make hard decisions and you have to have talent coming in. You take Dressler out of the Offense what do you have. You look at the kicking game where does it rate. You look at Canadian content does it scare anybody. Now typical Riders they will try the exact same approach for 2013 and try to get a different result. Again look at the CFL -B.C, Calgary in the West and you think Saskatchewan will pass them next year. This organization distracts by talking about how much money it makes and how may T shirts they sell. Then the distract talking about new pie in the sky stadiums. Meanwhile the on field product which drives everything continues to go down. I'd like to see what Chamblin would be told if he walks into the office tomorrow and wants to fire Richie Hall. You think that'll happen. Not a snowball chance in hell. Then you look at what the issues are in the Receiver core and not one of those NFL guys stepped up consistantly. They brought a guy to camp based on his Youtube video and that is not how you build rosters. Hey I don't care what they do as I hate the Riders, but to think anything is different going into 2013 think real hard on that.

Drew Tate starting QB ???? Mr. Kevin Glenn, great season. Calgary Stampeders Football Club would definitely not be where they are without your unselfish service to this 2012 CFL season Keep up the good work, best of luck the rest of the way. ElA

Anonymous said...

Hard to win with an offence that has one RB and one WR and is less than average at all other offensive positions. Taman needs to imrove the WR position, O line on offense and the DB's and Dline. A field goal kicker would be a nice get also. The QB position is average at best and the backups need to be improved. Considering last year I guess this is an improvement. The Riders can sure find new ways to break peoples hearts.

and who brought Kevin Glenn to the CFL? Roy Shivers can take another credit. Meanwhile we get Drew Willy and JT O'Sullivan. Somehow I don't see those 2 saving teams bacon 10 years down the line.

Anonymous said...

No they didn't deserve to be in the playoffs because they were an 8 and10 team, but they made it ,so had just as much chance to get to the cup as any ther team . In all honesty I thought they would be blown away today but they weren't. I saw a glimpse of the darian we need to see every game. Too bad this game is the end of the road. This team is halfway there and this time next year we are right in the thick of things. I predict first or second place for them next year, and although some of these guys will be gone, 2/3of the team will be intact and in their prime. The right recruits and we are dancing the Grey Cup victory dance next year

Predictions are for fools!! The idea that any sub .500 that makes the playoffs really has a chance to win it all is fools folly. Very few .500 have ever done it and those games were an embarassment to the league. Fortunately the better and better seeded team won. This team needs a total rebuild of the secondary, improved O-line, better Canadian recievers, and some better coaching on both sides of the ball. I don't believe we have the ability to scout and identify talent. Poor management is the reason.

It's sad but losing has now returned and become a way of life with this team. When an 8-10 record and being punted out of the playoffs looks good, you see my point. The losing ways with this team has extended to the pysche of the football fans. For a few brief years we embraced excellence but now in a short while we are happy with hoping for "better" NEXT year. Sound familiar? The only way to get excellence is to demand it. Losers lose. Winners win. Until some morons stop the donkey kissing and start hold the organizational structure's feet the the fire, nothing will ever change. One Grey Cup every 20 years by default. Get used to it.

Let's start a new mantra for 2013 and beyond..."The Riders ALWAYS find ways to WIN the big game!"
It might sound corny to some of you, but really, what harm can it do??
So, to those that continually jump on and off the Rider bandwagon, shut your cakehole and stop spewing your poison on every fanpage and blog!
