LIONS 44 RIDERS 10

(Photo from my Prairie Mobile BlackBerry Torch)

VANCOUVER -- The Saskatchewan Roughriders opened the 2012 CFL preseason with a 44-10 loss to the defending Grey Cup champion BC Lions Wednesday night in Vancouver.  It was clear the team has plenty to work on but there were some bright spots too.

The Lions held leads of 6-0, 20-3 and 34-3 by quarter.  BC quarterback Mike Reilly was the Lions' offensive game star firing three touchdown passes, two to Nick Moore and one to Shawn Gore.  The Riders' offensive game star was quarterback Drew Willy who engineered a 12-play drive in the fourth quarter culminating in a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jason Chery.

The Riders were somewhat miffed by the Lions tactics in the game, blitzing early in the game and trying a fake on third down.  They also put in Reilly and first-string rusher Andrew Harris for the game's last touchdown in the contest's final minute.

"There was a full blitz, a fake punt, there was a couple of things. But that's football," Rider coach Corey Chamblin said on CKRM after the game. "We had a base plan. We wanted to see how we could play with a base plan.  They have a lot of vets and we played with a young team. We have vets too and next week we'll have more vets in and we'll see how we match up."

The Riders' leading receiver was Justin Harper (3/38), the leading rusher was Kory Sheets (3/32) and the leading passer was Drew Willy (7/13, 64 yards, 1 INT).  Darian Durant was 0/3 passing during his time in the first quarter.  J.T. O'Sullivan was 3/6 for 29 yards and Levi Brown was 5/10 for 54 yards but was picked off once.  Lions linebacker Adam Bighill returned it 44-yards for a touchdown on the second play of the second half.

The Riders conclude the preseason next Friday night at home to the Calgary Stampeders at 7:00 pm on 620 CKRM.

Riders have already won the 'Ugly Helmet' award. What is Hopson thinking, taking the most beloved logo in Western Canada off our helmets?

Vanilla O, Vanilla D, DD looked like a clone of last years version but the Riders may have found a keeper in Willy - I think he’ll stay on the 46 man protected list to develop this year though

I think I can safely predict that the starting QB for the new Ottawa CFL franchise in 2014 will be BC's #2 Mike Reilly.

I agree that with Ritchie's D and Chamblins 50+ point allowed playoff D will get us in the basement again this year.

I think Taman should of gotten a 3 year contract extension after watching that performance

I was very impressed with the effort and skill displayed by Drew Willy. He did the number 5 proud. He could well be the next Kent Austin in another 3 or 4 years from now. He deserves to be kept in Sask and developed by the Riders as a future star.

There was a couple of Tweets during the game from #cfl and the numbers on the helmets is only for the preseason games. Supposed to help coaches identify players better. Our beloved /S/ will be on the helmets for regular season. Before we start laying blame for stuff lets get the whole story. Ex: blaming Hopson for helmets.

Cory Sheets could well be our Cory Boyd.
Sam Hurl, in a year or two of development, could be the CFL's version of the Packer's Clay Mathews.

After seeing that debacle how can anyone not see another last place finish in the west?

That better not be the helmet! I hoped it was just something being done for pre-season

Anon3. Is that Hoppy's decision? Can you prove that perhaps. How about you take your head out of your a$$ and consider the fact that Chamblin is telling guys you don't get the logo on your helmet until you make this team. I suppose you're one of the idiots that thinks Durant should be benched after this one. Go cheer for another football team you knuckledragger!

On a side note the tactics by Beinvedes was sad, what a classless act on his part to pull a fake early in the season, I have a feeling karma will come back to haunt him, that was gross and i wish someone wouldve called him on that. If that is how his career is going to go it wont last long, PATHETIC & SAD!

Let's slow down a bit. It is just the first game of pre season, and people are already complaining.

I love the passion for CFL football in Regina and the province of Saskatchewan, which is evident from the above comments. In Edmonton, the Eskimos are almost viewed as minor league--they can't hold a candle to the Oilers. Year-by-year the attendance at Commonweath dwindles. The empty seats in a vast stadium marks the decline of a once-proud franchise.

Seems like we lost BIG time in preseason to Calgary a couple of years ago....got blown out by just about the same score...we all know what happened to Calgary when they met us in the playoffs that year...

BC just might have kindled a fire under this young team...Can you spell D-I-S-R-E-S-P-E-C-T...

Getting pummelled in the preseason is kind of a tradition. We lost preseason games badly in '09 and '10 and went to the Cup. We won a preseason game last year and everyone thought we were great.

We played vanilla offence and vanilla defence last night. We left a number of vets at home. This game was about player evaluation, not winning a chess match against the Grey Cup Champs.

Let's keep things in perspective. We'll see what the real Roughriders look like on June 29th.

True Green Fans from the look of the comments on this board. This is preseason people not the Grey Cup. There running a vanila O and D plus a lot of our starters were sitting at home watching. Yes it was a but ugly but lets wait a few games before we start throwing in the towel.

Wow some of you clowns make me laugh. It is the pre season for god sakes. Who knew a Grey Cup champ was predicted in the pre season. We should probably annoint BC the champs now and cancel the season. Relax ya part time fans. Half the team was not there and these were rookies. Maybe let the season start at least before ya write the team and the new coach off already. No wonder our team rubs other fans the wrong way sometimes. If we happen to have a good year I hope you are all back on the band wagon. GO RIDERS.

Anonymous said...

Its PRESEASON, everyone chill out!

Anonymous said...

off topic, but Roddy what are your thoughts on the Jim Rome - David Stern interview?

Anonymous said...

How does a coach evaluate rookies if he plays vets? Thankfully our coaching staff understands that and knows a pre-season win is not as important as player evaluation.
Why get bent out of shape about this loss?
Durant was in for a few series as expected. He was behind a very inexperienced O-line who faced unsportsman like blitzing. The Riders need to see who is a player and who is not. I see potential in all 3 backups.Willy had the advantage of watching the defence for 3 quarters and was playing mostly against BC's less experienced defence.
I sense it will take a few games to get everything clicking. Expect a few losses early. It takes time to build a winner. I am okay with losses if we are constantly improving. The objective this year is to build and hopefully manage a playoff spot.

Rod Pedersen said...

I think Rome could have worded his question differently such as "what do you say to those who suggest the draft was fixed?"

DJK said...

I think there are 2 things to remember here.

1. It is only pre-season and we were playing a lot of our rookies. Let's just see what this team can do when we field our starters.

2. I think the reason people are upset on this game is because after last year we wanted to see that things had changed. Everybody was so excited with all the prospects brought in that they forgot that it is pre-season and it doesn't mean anything. I understand why people wanted to win and see a good showing but this does not mean we will have a bad team. Give it some time. We might have to be a bit patient until week 3 or 4. That is probably when things will start to click and this team will show it's full potential. Remember the Lions of last year everybody!

I guess all the ranting and anger shows the passion for this team even if it is misguided. Relax everybody and let the team develop. Things can only get better after that game!

I'm not one to look too much into preseason games.. But I just watched the game again and Tristan Jackson looked awful, he got beat for two of the three touchdowns Reilly threw and he seemed to be keying off of where Jackson was.
Not something you wanna see from a "vet"

Anonymous said...

Kory Sheets and Sam Hurl are definite keepers. Did you say he (Hurl) has two years left at Calgary?

I found Benevides to be a complete and utter idiot for A) running a fake punt B) bringing in his starting RB to get a late TD when it had already been decided and C0running up the score. He'll get his.

Garth

Anonymous said...

I believe Tristan Jackson was playing out of position because Frazier was in Regina. So can't fault him too much for last night.

Caesar said...

Rookies or preseason or not, we looked absolutely terrible. And who cares if they ran a fake kick and blitzed. PICK IT UP! The point of preseason is to try some stuff out that you need to tweak for the REAL season.

When Coach C rambles on about how they only had this guy and only had this guy in, it belittles the team that you DID have in. You're saying that we lost because we had a bunch of replacements in. So what confidence does that put in your backups!??? Not much.

Let's see what happens next week.

Anonymous said...

Look at the bright side people. It's pre-season, lots of rookies playing and coaching, and best off all, nobody walking around talking about how well the "men" played. That in itself has me pumped. It's all positive no matter this years record.
DM

Anonymous said...

Agree 100% with Caesar. In terms of the overall of watching the individual talent they are junk. Your hero Kent Austin said backups are expected to perform like starters. Well the O-Line was terrible, the Defense was terrible, and the secondary was scorched.

Full credit for Benevedies throwing the kitchen sink. He knows as does anyone who follows this league knows Darian Durant can't play under pressure, and he can't make decisions fast when he's held in the pocket. When he runs like a chicken with it's head cutoff then he has a chance on scramble rules to complete a stunning pass, but it's not planned by any stretch.

Where this season will go in the tank is frankly the talent isn't there. I'm not even going to focus on Coaching. The talent isn't there because it was all fantasy football. Get ex-NFL and name NCAA guys and see what happens.

The results were evident.

Anyone who is predicting a last place finish or a 1-17 record for our RIDERS after one preseason game (where a lot of starters were left in regina)should be forced to give up all their RIDER gear and never get it back. I mean come on people it was preseason. The teams in the NFL that constantly do well (patriots, steelers..etc) often go 0-4 in the preseason. evaluating talent is the goal not winning.

Another Durant failure that had me deja-vu-ing to last year. I don't care WHO he has out there on the field with him. If the line breaks down, SCRAMBLE. If he has time, HIT A RECEIVER IN THE HANDS. Execute. Durant waits for things to become clear and then makes a play-- often much too late. He rarely makes something happen anymore-- like he did a couple years ago. Star players win games/make plays. They don't wait for the other team to slip up and give them something. The Riders are the CFL version of an NHL trapping team-- except this league is all about scoring points. Disappointed.

(And the helmets look great for pre-season, btw. Classy. Not like the ridiculous "tramp stamp" on the jerseys. What other football team has a logo under the numbers? Packers? Cowboys? Giants? Uh... Nobody. Because it's stupid.)

Zero defensive pressure. Poor offensive protection. Darian looked disintersted "again". Don't want to panic here but it looked too familiar!!!

DJK said...

Hey Obama,

Glad to see how positive you are again...

Everybody should note that in 2009 and 2010 we lost both of our pre season games. One each year was a blow out.

I think we made it to the Grey Cup those two years as well. Not sure though...

Anonymous said...

I told you last year he is an excuse maker to the n'th degree. I'm not piling on him, but he has a big mouth over the past few years, and he's been a proven Coach killer.

Hey I watched Ricky Ray for a few years finish in last place and throw for 5000 yards with no O-Line protection. It's because he can read a defense and make a play.

I'm not in any panic. I'm just saying based on the front office comments I heard on the radio they didn't evaluate talent last year properly and it was stated just because they are the Riders doesn't mean they're guaranteed wins. So if you didn't evaluate talent properly last year, then what would say it'd be evaluated properly this season?

When the franchise stops listening to the fans and quits playing "you pick the roster, GM, and Coach", maybe they'll have a chance.

There were years I predicted them in the Grey Cup finals....not this year. This year is a 4-5 win season.

One last thing....go tell Odell Willis where he is on the depth chart and that he's not playing....good luck with that. He's a headcase that just watched a game telling him this team needs him more than he needs it. Get ready for a nice season of dysfunction.

Holy cow...it is days like this that I embarrassed to be associated with some people in the Rider Nation....two days ago people were excited to see the talent that was brought to camp so that the coaches can make informed decisions on who should be on this club...now just because we took a roster of mostly rookies, had two starters off the offensive line, the Lions played most of their starters the whole game (because they have few rookies) then suddenly after ONE....ONE preseason game the sky is falling! The sky is falling! We need to sacrifice a victory for player evaluation...period.

It is a convenient way for some people to vent about their lives by crapping on the Riders whenever something remotely negative happens...it beats kicking your dog or beating your wife I guess. The dog better hide under the bed when the Riders are having good days.

Obama and Caesar - Austin did say that backups should play like starters...but since when are your backups known in the first preseason game? We have 80 or so players in camp and 30 of those will be gone in the next two weeks. They go through training camp and exhibition to figure out who the starters AND back ups are going to be. Some of those people out there will not even be here in the next couple of days and therefore will not be backups. So your reference to Austin and backups is way off base. Lets wait to see the real roster before dumping.

Chamblin also said that he had guys playing out of position on purpose...for example he had Tristan Jackson playing half because he wants people to be able to play multiple positions - not only to cover for injuries but it also makes your game plans more flexible if you can move guys around. Lets give that philosophy a chance - especially in the preseason.

As for Durant - lets hold off the white sheets until after he plays with Labatte and Best and Getzlaf and Dressler and Bagg, etc. all in the lineup.

They also are working on an entirely new playbook and it is going to take time to gel. Like one poster said BC was crap to start the year last year but once they got their set line-up and played half a season together they gelled and the rest is history.

This roster has almost completely turned over in two years - we have guys that have never even played in Canada before and people expect them to be the next coming after two weeks of practicing and one preseason game against the starters from the defending champions?

Give your heads a shake and relax.

So typical of so called "fans"! Geez.

Did the o line in the 4th guarter not play bad if drew willy was able to compete a drive?

Anonymous said...

Lets not forget BC didn't play with a "full" lineup either. The talent they had on the field was far superior to what we had. The questions remain about the architect of this team, the CEO and a lot of oathers connected with the Riders. Honest citique is not tolerated, yes men are plenty and new found mediocrity abounds and is the order of the day. Winners win and losers lose!

Rod Ryder said...

Enough complaining about what BC did, it was up to the Riders to stop them and why would you not try "trick plays", this is the time to do it,if the Riders had tried them it would have been okay. Our best QB last night was Willy, who would be third string in BC. Durant wins # 1 by default, Willy #2 and start looking for #3. Taman should be talking with Winnipeg about a QB trade or look hard at other teams cuts. Huurl, Evans, and Sheets were bright spots. Durant has to step up and be a team leader, why was he not communicating on the sidelines with our other QB's as Lulay was with his backups?.

Sara,

I wouldn't say I'm negative perhaps pragmatic. I do think though at the end of the day I classify people in 3 categories: Wise, Foolish, Evil. If it's a Wise person then I'll have the conversation of "have you considered" and I'll let someone say to me, "is it reasonable to assume". Those conversations and people I have all the time in the world for. Foolish people, with those I have neither the time, energy or wanton capacity to engage with so it's just easier for me to say, "here it is deal with it." Evil people and believe me there are many of those, I won't even begin or engage in the conversation. This Blog attracts maybe 3 Wise people a whole pile of Fools, and frankly a significant number of Evil.

We had one preseason game. I have predicted and put on here how many times will you hear or read someone say, "I've been a season ticket holder since...". That doesn't hold water with me.

Regarding BBQ's actually to be honest people like having me around because frankly I'm well rounded, have good social skills, and can interact with a variety of people from all walks of life. I'm able to actually engage in a variety of conversational topics too so I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one.

Thanks
Obama

Anon - the "full line up" of the Lions mostly veterans since they had very little turnover. Yes they had a few rookies but by and large they were a veteran team and therefore "superior" to our mostly rooks. And I can't believe that you would talk about mediocrity and losers versus winners after two weeks of practices and one preseason game....who is the real loser here?

Glenn said...

Nice picture Roddy !

Caesar said...

I'm not saying that they will be 1-17, I am saying they (the backups) better start playing like they WANT the starting job. A little better performance would've been expected.

The Woz said...

Ryder - how can you possibly annoint Willy as the #2 based on one quarter and a couple of drives? He did OK but the coaches will look at everything in making the decision including previous experience, work in all of the practices, etc. I hope Willy is the next great quarterback behind Durant. But he cannot be annointed as such yet. That would be the same philosophy that would have had Cole Berquist being our #2 based on his performance last year in the one preseason game he played in. Who knew who Brink and Elliott were until Buck got hurt last year...and just because those guys played a little I am not annointing them as "great" yet...in fact I am not sure if one of our backups is not just as good as they are. So a trade after one preseason game is ridiculous. Brown has apparently only thrown one interception in training camp...he made a rooke mistake on the INT last night but hey even Henry Burris threw into triple coverage for a pick last night. He will learn from that mistake. O'Sullivan is the true vet with the most experience and would give us the best chance to win if DD goes down.

I am going on record right now saying that Durant will start, O'Sullivan will be our back up, and either Brown or Willy will be the 3rd with the other coming up with a hangnail injury and be on the 9 game to develop and assess them further.

*sigh* In a perfect world this comment section would be empty after a pre-season game summary. It really is moot as it's not even close to a true representation of the team.

Case in point, the people that have mentioned the Riders 0-2 pre-season record in '09 and '10. WPG was 0-2 last year and started the season 7-1. B.C. DOMINATED the preseason going 2-0 outscoring opponents 58-6 and got off to an abysmal 1-6 start. Remind me who was in the Grey Cup last year? The CFL pre-season is a complete crap shoot and it is impossible to predict regular season results based on pre-season games.

Patience, folks. I know asking for patience from a Rider fan is like Paul McCallum asking for forgiveness after The 'Other' Kick. You'll end up run out of town with a pile of manure on your lawn.

Last year during the first round of exhibition games, certain teams 'agreed' to no blitzes or fake plays in order for a better evaluation. It appears not only was there no agreement for this game, but BC definitely didn't care to play nicely regarding...

Sask should remember that for in the future...

Anonymous said...

As for the helmet, I believe that is just for the exhibition... to be honest I kind of thought it was cool. Oldstyle - retrostyle... kind of like the Alabama Crimson Tide... one of the oldest looking uniforms in NCAA College, a uniform and helmet (just with numbers) that still strikes fear into opposing teams... Maybe Sk should consider it all year long.

Anonymous said...

Just a second Rudy Huxtable. You are no suggesting this year's team is on par with the BC Lions or the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of last season? You certainly can't be suggesting this years team can actually win a Grey Cup? If the preseason is a crapshoot then frankly any idiot on this Blog can walk in and be the GM of a Professional football team.

What I witnessed last night essentially told me this is going to be a monumental uphill climb, and is not going to end well. There were 2 teams in the Western Division last year that finished ahead of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and you know what? They dumped their starting QBs because it was deemed those guys hit the expiry date, and they got rid of them before the proverbial milk went sour while in their fridges. We didn't do that here.

Regarding the BC Lions of last year there will never come a day where I will bet against Wally Buono as a Head Coach or Executive in this league. All that guy needed was some time, and the other thing is with time I will never bet against Roy Shivers and his gangstas to get it together under Wally Buonos watch. In Winnipeg Joe Mack has been around the block enough to know what's what. He didnt' hire Greg Marshall under pressure, but the Riders did. Joe Mack decided it wasn't worth keeping Odell Willis, but we decided to take him.

There has been no good decision making in the past that would anywhere suggest on a go forward basis things are turning around. You heard it here first. Until November you will not read one post criticizing the Coaching of this football team. You can't win if you don't have talent, and you can't win if you can't find talent, and you can't win unless you have a QB, Canadians, and a Kicking game. The Riders stink in all 3 of those aspects so brace yourself for a very ugly season.

Believe me I take no comfort in writing that because I want them to succeed, but this organization lost it's way. It's not Taman's fault, but the culture went to crap and there is no clear line of authority or decision making. You can't win like that.

To this Obama person...

My friend, when you find yourself constantly having to explain and defend yourself day after day, based on comment after comment, at some point you might want to consider toning it down... or maybe taking a hint.

Did you ever wonder why so many comments are wrong yet you are the only one who is right? Think about it...

The Woz said...

Obama - are you suggesting that DD is beyond his best before date?? Really? He turns 30 this year...that is past your best before date? Wow. IMO DD is the best quarterback we have had in 20 years. The guy was awesome for two years and even though he apparently had a bad year in 2011 he still threw for 3600 yards and 18 TDs....even in the circus last year. It really really shows that you know nothing about football and should go back to political ramblings....oh....you don't know anything about that either.

Your comparative examples are Burris (who turns 36 this year) and Ray (who turns 33 this fall). The jury is out on whether Tillman made the right call in trading Ray - he is getting roasted in Edmonton for it. Right now Kavis is saying that 40 year old KJ might start! As for Tate he looked average in Calgary's playoff game and Tillman dumped him when he was here - so jury out there as well. I would not take Tate, KJ, Burris or Ray over DD at this stage of their careers.

I actually agree with you on the Buono/Shivers combo. But your comment on pressure to hire Marshall - not sure where that is coming from...what pressure? From who? Taman actually wanted Chamblin. The fans wanted Dickenson. Miller made the decision himself and paid the price for it...but there was no pressure to hire Marshall....

Odell Willis - just because he made a mistake like many have and drove under the influence you suddenly think he is a bum? He is a good player and from what I understand has been a fine citizen since he got here so not sure what you are talking about there either. Good trade as far as I am concerned. And Joe Mack's team started 7-1 last year but then finished 3-7...so how good are the bombers and how good is he as a GM...he did nothing in the off season.

You say we have no kicking game...what is wrong with Milo? Bodnar has looked good too. So what are you talking about?

You say we have no Canadians...what about Butler, Milo, Heenan, Hurl, Best, Bagg, Getzlaf, Labatte, etc. We have good Canadians so again what are you talking about?

No clear line of authority? Have you been asleep? To dumb it down for you it is Board...Hopson....Taman...Chamblin....that structure is the same as most other teams in the league...so again what are you talking about??

Go back to counting the hair in your navel.

"Just a second Rudy Huxtable. You are no suggesting this year's team is on par with the BC Lions or the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of last season?"

Obama, you are right! (first time ever written on this blog?) I didn't suggest that. I suggested that "it is impossible to predict regular season results based on pre-season games." Teams that go winless, undefeated, score 100 points or score 0 points in the pre-season can win the championship in this league (hence the point about previous CFL pre-season records).

My statement is black and white. Yours in your full post somewhere above is deeply analytical. I did not delve into the depth of our talent or the quality of our front office or the opponents' front office. You did and that's fine. You can believe what you want to believe. But as much as you like to state things as fact your comments are, after all, just an opinion.

I don't hope for the best but expect the worst. I simply hope for the best. I have no expectations because history has shown anything can happen in professional sports. Especially in the CFL.

I'll be very black and white one more time. The Riders are one of just eight teams in the CFL. Therefore, they along with the other seven teams have a chance to win the Grey Cup.

The roster has changed alot since last year. Now I hope for the best. Hope and Change, friend. Hope and Change.

I actually was impressed with a lot of the new recruits: Harper, Sheets, Rankin,Willy and a couple of new DB's. Those guys made plays and are a big uptick from last year. Only 2 yrs ago the veteran Riders dismantled the rebuilding Lions in a game at Empire. What we didn't realize was the Riders would age and slide and the Lions would quickly rebuild with real athletes. the positions are reversed now.

What was disappointing was the o line, d line and LB's. Not sure why those recruits look so bad compared to the offensive skill positions. Hopefully those positions aren't as bad as they looked last night.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Riders start slow due to all the changes, but they should keep improving and be a playoff team. I like all the changes. Only a few stepped up last night, but it's only 1 preseason game.
