LIONS 44 RIDERS 10
VANCOUVER -- The Saskatchewan Roughriders opened the 2012 CFL preseason with a 44-10 loss to the defending Grey Cup champion BC Lions Wednesday night in Vancouver. It was clear the team has plenty to work on but there were some bright spots too.
The Lions held leads of 6-0, 20-3 and 34-3 by quarter. BC quarterback Mike Reilly was the Lions' offensive game star firing three touchdown passes, two to Nick Moore and one to Shawn Gore. The Riders' offensive game star was quarterback Drew Willy who engineered a 12-play drive in the fourth quarter culminating in a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jason Chery.
The Riders were somewhat miffed by the Lions tactics in the game, blitzing early in the game and trying a fake on third down. They also put in Reilly and first-string rusher Andrew Harris for the game's last touchdown in the contest's final minute.
"There was a full blitz, a fake punt, there was a couple of things. But that's football," Rider coach Corey Chamblin said on CKRM after the game. "We had a base plan. We wanted to see how we could play with a base plan. They have a lot of vets and we played with a young team. We have vets too and next week we'll have more vets in and we'll see how we match up."
The Riders' leading receiver was Justin Harper (3/38), the leading rusher was Kory Sheets (3/32) and the leading passer was Drew Willy (7/13, 64 yards, 1 INT). Darian Durant was 0/3 passing during his time in the first quarter. J.T. O'Sullivan was 3/6 for 29 yards and Levi Brown was 5/10 for 54 yards but was picked off once. Lions linebacker Adam Bighill returned it 44-yards for a touchdown on the second play of the second half.
The Riders conclude the preseason next Friday night at home to the Calgary Stampeders at 7:00 pm on 620 CKRM.
