PATS DISCIPLINED

The Western Hockey League threw the book at the Regina Pats one day after the club's 5-4 double overtime loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors in Game 4 of their WHL Eastern Conference Quarterfinal.

Forward Dyson Stevenson has been suspended one game for the clipping major he was assessed late in the third period.  It was the call which cost the Pats the victory.  Meanwhile Regina Pats President Brent Parker was fined $2500 for inappropriate conduct.  It's believed Parker may have punched a door in the press box and had a verbal exchange with WHL officials.

The Warriors lead the series 3-1 with Game 5 Friday night in Moose Jaw on 620 CKRM.  The game is sold out.

The league had no choice but to suspend the Regina player. If they
didnt suspend the player they would be admitting to a bad call by the referee.. If you read the rules. I dont see how they could asses a major here. There was no injury as the MJ player skated away after the incident.

Rule 44 - Clipping
44.1 Clipping - Clipping is the act of throwing the body, from any direction, across or below the knees of an opponent.
A player may not deliver a check in a “clipping” manner, nor lower his own body position to deliver a check on or below an opponent’s knees.
An illegal “low hit” is a check that is delivered by a player or goalkeeper who may or may not have both skates on the ice, with his sole intent to check the opponent in the area of his knees. A player may not lower his body position to deliver a check to an opponent’s knees.
44.2 Minor Penalty - A player who commits these fouls will be assessed a minor penalty for “clipping.”
44.3 Major Penalty - If an injury occurs as a result of this “clipping” check, the player must be assessed a major penalty (see 44.5).
44.4 Match Penalty - The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent by clipping.
44.5 Game Misconduct Penalty - A game misconduct penaltymust be assessed anytime a major penalty is applied for injuring an opponent by clipping.

I don't agree with the call against stevenson. It was a penalty -- likely a minor penalty (ie. tripping) -- however it's clear a degree of personal emotion on behalf of the official entered into the decision. The official's body language in making the call was very evident of this fact. The entire episode was a 'statement of authority' by the official.

Brent Parker continues to embarrass himself in the eyes of the public. And he wonders why fans are critical of his decisions and behaviour.

Perhaps he should focus on being a role model to the kids, and a mentor to his staff -- rather than acting like a 16 year old kid that just lost a game in double overtime -- who lacks the maturity to control his/her emotions.

Anon 2. I am not the biggest Brent Parker fan, but I don't blame him one bit for losing his top last night. That game arguably took away another home playoff gate and cost his team the series. Do you expect him to twiddle his thumbs and say OK. Give your head a shake.

Karma's a bitch? What are you talking about? If the Warriors move onto another round, I hope they get every little thing called against them. Their opponent dives all over the ice and it doesn't get called. That would be Karma

Good on Brent Parker to let them know what's what. My level of respect for Parker just rose 1 notch.

OMG ROD YOU ARE THE BIGGEST WHINER OF THEM ALL. You should really go back tonight & listen to sports cage & hear yourself. Its pretty bad when Pats fans themself are fed up with your whining & crying. Im mean a 2 hour show of you going on like a 5 year old is way too much. Say your piece & then shut up about it & move on to something else, there is nothing that can be done now.

Do you know why they named that pukey little city "MooseJaw"?
Because back in the day they weren't allowed to call it MooseAss

To anon #3 ...

There is an appropriate way to express displeasure.

It doesn't start with yelling at two off-ice officials that had nothing to do with the call -- nor does it include punching a hole in the door of the replay booth.

Parker has a long (and documented) history of this type of adolescent behaviour.

Don't make excuses for an individual that continues to display erratic and disrespectful behaviour.

I sincerely hope Mr Parker provides a personal apology to the individuals that he verbally attacked, and repairs the damage he inflicted to the facilities at the Brandt Center.

You know Rod, the way you treated Kelly Remple on your show tonight is disgusting. Just because you are mad about the game last night, it is no reason to be rude to your guest. If you play back what was said, and I know you have it on tape, you will see that you were putting words in his mouth and saying things that HE DID NOT SAY!
I think that you should man-up, apologize to him and beg him for forgiveness. If I were, Kelly, I would have punched you right in the mouth, and I AM NOT A VIOLENT PERSON! Cool down or you will have a heart attack!

An interested listener.

Rod this is the best blog ever. All the banter between Moose Jaw and Regina is fantastic. We all know it's in good fun and it is partially why the Pats and Warriors have the best rivalry in the WHL.

Keep them coming....

Samuellson from the Oil Kings has had this suspension a couple times now... Here is the explanation he got from the WHL:

"a. "Should a player, who is skating in a forward motion, deliberately lower his body in such a manner as to make contact with the opponent below the waist, he shall be assessed a major and a game misconduct for clipping. There will be no option for a minor penalty in this situation."

After reading that, it is clear why Stevenson was addressed the penalty and suspension. Given those comments, the ref had no choice, just following instructions from the league. I'm not sure why Pats think the whole world is out to get them.

There is simply nothing left to say about this suspension. Over. Just like the series. You want to read more go here:

Giglardi violates league policy this summer and ends up in a war with the media in Kamloops. Robison kisses his ass and goes on camera to defend Giglardi breaking the rules. Parker gets fined for calling BS on something that was BS, amazing isn't it.

The WHL is solely to blame for this mess. This was probably the closest series of those in the east. It had the potential to be volatile. Why would they bring in a junior referee with a history of problems in the MJHL and a local guy? In a pivitol game? Montison screwed up so badly that he didn't call a penalty the rest of the way, even though there were infractions both ways. Wieler lacked the courage to do it either.

A veteran official wouldn't have made that cheap call. It was a minor and nothing more. That coming from various unbiased people who seen it. An NHL scout sees two players end up locking skates and going down. Two minute tripping penalty if anything at all. That from an NHL person with no affiliation to either team. Even Remple admits tonight it's a minor at best. That inexperienced weak-ass call caused this series to be over in 5 games. It probably cost the Parkers 100-150 thousand dollars. That's a travesty but he sure didn't get the Giglardi treatment did he? SAD SAD! This should have been a 6 or 7 game series full of great hockey. Thanks to Montison and the league we the fans, have been cheated out of it. Dorkson, Robison and Loraas can all give themselves a pat on the back. They did Giglardi after all.

Let's ALL take a deep breath. Kelly Remple at no time said it was NOT a penelty whatsoever. What he said was he missed the actual collision, watched BOTH sportscasts to see the hit, and neither Global or CTV caught it. So he is not comfortable talking about something he admittedly missed. Why would a Pats fan be offended by that?

Dear interested listener,

Conflict makes for good radio. Try listening to shows that air in big markets sometime.

I'm sure Rod and Kelly had a good laugh after the show about getting rubes like yourself all worked up.

Well played boys!

HOLY SHIT what a battle on the Cage. Remple was making all kinds of sense, to which went right over Roddy's head. haha

I agree with Kelly. It's a sad sad day when we have 6300 screaming fans and maybe THE best junior hockey OT game we have seen in years, and everyone is talking about a bloody referee. Let's talk what what matters. Players.

I can see why Rod is HOT as a Pats' fan, and want to spend an entire show on that "referee" angle. I also see why Remps was getting tired of beating a dead horse. He wanted to talk about the atmosphere, Marincian's and Chandler's amazing game, and the actual hockey a bit more. I see it both ways.

I agree with Kelly too on another point. The Parkers are proud people who love the players, and want to entertain their fans and feel the rush of a full noisy building, and make a little money, (as Rod says, they've admitted times have been difficult) and that game could end up resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenues if there is no game 6. OUCH!

Anonymous said...

Going by the explanation given about the Samuellson incident, I can see more now why this was called the way it was. I never saw the incident last night clearly because play was moving up ice. So I really can't comment on that anymore.

Also, like I said in the other post, the reason why the officiating is being scrutinized is because of the lack of calls during the game. Whenever the Pats were able to get some momentum and apply pressure, they would get tripped or interfered with with no call, while the Pats were doing the same things the other way, but getting called. The Stevenson incident was just the icing on the cake and because of when it happened, has been made the center of attention.

The officiating was bad last night. Though why couldn't they call the whole game like OT? They let them play, both teams getting away with numerous things. But I'm past it all now, as regardless of what happened, it was still a hell of a game! And I'm till hoping the Pats can bring it back for a game 6. I'll be in the Jaw tomorrow cheering the Pats on.

Did anyone see the brief clip before the hit. The MJ player was on the boards, the Pats player was at the hash marks when the pucked moved up ice. WTF is the Pats player going into the corner for a hit (late) in the 1st place?

Also if he is going to hit the MJ player low on top of a late hit, the ref can only assume he intended to TRY to injury the MJ player. The call was right, so quit whinning you bunch of b@#@$%&^!! Cody Beech got suspended because "He hurt the Pats with words"

Boo Hoo Pats fans Karma is a real bite in the ASS.
As for you Pedersen you acted like a real ASS yourself today on your show, if I was Remple I would have slapped you in the mouth!!

Squeek, so that's the sound you were making in that movie Deliverance? I swore he told you to squeal like a pig? Maybe it was squeak? Either way you spell it wrong. If the Warriors were assessed a penalty like the Pats were, their fans would have been burned and pillaged their village, but Warrior fans call Pats fans whiners, because we are disappointed with the referees about a bogus call that changed the series? I applaud Mr Parker, and anyone who says different is a dip shit, i would like to see how others react, if someone did something that cost their business $100,000 in revenue. I know one thing I would be embarrassed if the Pats were a 2nd place team, and they needed assistance from the referees to beat a 7th place club; just saying.

Anonymous said...

Why has no one made the correlation between 2 of this referee's games in this month alone? Yesterday, someone posted a TSN story about Brett Montsion and a game he worked in Dauphin mid-March. The Dauphin coach did not agree with a controversial call that Montsion made then either, and it hit TSN. We were sitting right by the hit Wednesday night, and it looked like the Pats player checked the Moose Jaw player, they both fell down and they both got up and skated away. Anyways, the referee should be investigated for his rogue calls.

Anonymous said...

DT Jensen is back. Ok, DT, let me ask you this. Put your bitter hatred aside for the city of MJ and their team. Think about this ok? Pats have complained about EVERYTHING since the series began. If it's not Beach being mean, it's Beach saying something. Then they complain about hand clappers to the league, and MJ security. Then THEIR player slewfoots a kid 50 feet behind the play, and Brent Parker puts a fist through a wall and they are furious about THAT.

DT, not disaggreeing that Warrior fans would be pissed too, but don't you think enough is enough. They are better, period. We're not down 3-1 because the league hates us.

Mikey

Anonymous said...

"I hope parker sent a message to the officals and the leauge"

BAHAHAHAHA! I sure hope this is sarcasm! How is he sending a message? Parker's but a pimple on the leagues rear. And I'm not a fan of either team.

If anything the league sent a message to him. Act like a tool in public and we'll do our best to point it out and embarrass you.

LOL. Yeah, I'm sure the league is real shaken by the incident! Good Christ, I can't wait until the Pats are rolled tonight so we can stop the insanity.

dtjensen said...

Mikey, I am not saying that the Pats and their fans haven't complained. I am saying that this series is 3 - 1, because of an incompetent referee who made an outlandish call against the Pats with very little time left on the clock, that eventually turned the game and likely the series. The league and its officiating should be ashamed and embarrassed about the way that game ended up, and again only because of a referee on a power trip. In reference to Beach and the Pats complaining about him, I ask you have you seen Beach on the ice? He falls every two strides, he gets touched and he drops like someone slammed a piano on his head, and then whines when he takes penalties. He won't fight anyone that isn't 4 feet shorter than him, and he makes fans in other cities absolutely dispise him and his femininity. So he performs his job well, and I applaud him, I still think he's a Piece of Shi*. In reference to your comments about my hatred for Moose Javians, and their team, I disagree with that statement whole heartedly. I don't hate the hamlet of Moose Jaw, and I don't hate the team they have there, I know for a fact that they have many great fans and their team without a question is far more superior than the team here in Regina. I do however have a hatred for the degenerate fans that say the Pats are only whining and complaining, because they are losing. I am asking these fans to pull their respected heads out of their A**es and wake up. If the shoe was on the other foot and were getting all the calls against them and their precious Warrior hockey club, they would be doing the same damned thing, and yes even the Silver Fox who for the life of me I still can't understand why someone who is very knowledgeable on sports still cheers for the Vikings. Now that's funny LOL :-)

Matt Domingues lives in Moose Jaw not Regina!! As far as the game and the clipping call the other night, the ref made the call, he's paid to do his job, nobody saw the play from the ice like he did!! He correctly gave 5 minutes and game misconduct like he was directed to by the league. The WHL then handed out a 1 game suspension as they have done so all year long for this call. Do you not think this ruling is in place to protect the players, taking someone out at or below the knees can be career ending. Remember Jason Jimenez clip on Anthony Gargiulo that ended his career in the CFL. So suck it up and quit blaming the refs for Moose Jaws 3 - 1 game lead in the series. The Pats had 55 other minutes and 26 minutes of overtime to put the Warriors away. They didn't and they lost!! As for Parkers fine, there are other ways to show passion for your team, not punch a hole in the door, do you not think the fine was justified!! I do, actions like that but a black mark on the Pats organization
