SUNDAY SPORTS

Canada built a 3-0 lead and held off the United States 3-2, to finish 4-0 after the preliminary round at the world junior hockey championship in Alberta. Canada went into the game with bye into the semifinals, while the Americans were already dropped into the relegation round. Sweden also finished first in its pool, and earned a bye to the semifinals, after rallying from a 3-0 deficit to beat Russia 4-3 in overtime.

Florida Panthers forward Krys Barch was ejected after reportedly directing a racial slur at Montreal defenceman P-K Subban. Barch received a game misconduct after a dustup at the end of the first period in the Panthers' 3-2 win. The Miami Herald, citing an unidentified league official, says linesman Darren Gibbs overheard Barch use the slur against Subban.

The Los Angeles Kings broke out of their scoring funk with a 4-1 win over Vancouver. It's only the second time in 18 games that the Kings scored more than two goals in regulation. Winnipeg kept feeding on Toronto's weak spot, scoring two power-play goals in a 3-2 victory over the Maple Leafs. The Leafs went into the game with the NHL's lowest ranked penalty-killing unit.

Bobby Butler scored the decisive goal in the fifth round of the shootout to lift the Ottawa Senators past Buffalo 3-2. Matt Moulson had two goals and an assist in the Islanders' four-goal first period, as New York beat Edmonton 4-1. Steven Stamkos padded his lead in the N-H-L goal-scoring race with a hat trick, giving him 26 on the season, in Tampa Bay's 5-2 win over Carolina.

The Detroit Pistons ended coach Lawrence Frank's 20-game losing streak with a 96-88 victory over Indiana. Frank lost 17 in a row while coaching New Jersey, and the Pistons lost the first three this season before beating the Pacers. Oklahoma City is 5-0, leading wire-to-wire in a 107-97 victory over Phoenix.

The Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a minor league contract with reliever Aaron Laffey. The left-hander made 47 appearances last season with Seattle and the New York Yankees. And, the Chicago White Sox sent the two-time all-star outfielder Carlos Quentin to San Diego for a pair of pitching prospects.

Krys Barch is the definition of what's wrong with the NHL. Racial slurs aside, he should be gone anyway. He's played 275 games as a forward and has tallied a grand total of 26 points. And Bettman wonders why he can't sell the game across the line. There shouldn't be any room in the NHL for guys like him.

So......to open up a new subject then, how about eliminating these
4th line slugs and opening up the ice by going 4 on 4. This will give the more skilled players the ice they need to entertain the masses and likely create more respect out there, in turn decrease the head injuries. Simple solutions for everything, huh!?!

or change to international ice size and rules. Stars could show talent without goons.
