CATCHING UP WITH GREG MARSHALL

From Herb Zurkowsky's Montreal Gazette article:

MONTREAL -- The Alouettes are in the market for a defensive coordinator, and Greg Marshall might be the most qualified man for the job - should Canadian Football League experience be a prerequisite.

So it should come as no surprise the Als have been in contact with Marshall, the former head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, The Gazette has learned. But that, of course, doesn't necessarily mean he's about to be hired, unless head coach Marc Trestman believes there's a comfort level with Marshall and the two find they can coexist.

"Let's say I've heard from them," Marshall admitted during an interview with The Gazette while visiting family near Sacramento, Calif. "I don't know their process or their thoughts.

"The Alouettes are going to do what gives them the best chance to win a Grey Cup," he added. "I'm always thinking and believing I'm the best option. If I don't believe that, who's going to?"

Als management, led by Trestman and general manager Jim Popp, are in Mobile, Ala., this week, site of the Senior Bowl. Along with their scouting duties, they'll be conducting interviews with potential coaching candidates. Montreal has lost four assistants since the end of last season, including defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar, who just last week accepted a similar position at Purdue University.

Marshall initially refused comment when asked whether he would be interviewed this week. Later, he said there were no plans "at this time" for him to travel to Mobile.

In an email, Trestman said he wouldn't comment on potential interviews with coaching staff.

"If someone's interested, I'll always listen. I'll make the best decision moving forward for me," Marshall said. "I would be interested in what (the Als) have to offer. At some point, I see myself back in coaching, although I don't know the time frame. I want to make sure the next move is the right move ... the best thing for my career ... the best move, moving forward.

"I enjoy coaching. I always have," Marshall added. "I see myself getting back in the right circumstances and equation. I miss it, and I've missed it from the day I walked out of the (Riders') office."
Marshall obviously remains disappointed over his departure from Saskatchewan, but can say only so much, given the fact he's still being compensated by the organization.

"I don't need to say anything," he said. "I'm disappointed how things worked out and am trying to move on."

I'd love to see Greg land on his feet somewhere.

It was clear by the end of the season that the Riders' problems ran much deeper than what took place at the Head Coach position.

You got that right Jarrett. It started way before he was hired as head coach. Don't need to mention names, they know who they are.

Thankfully some of those names are gone and we can rebuild after that gongshow.

Myself I would take Marshall over Hall anyday. Notice how no other team wanted Hall as a coordinator. (coordinator+asst coach) this off season?

Aside from a lot of deeper issues he should have been given a year, but from the onset this was a complete no win situation for him. He waited forever for a job so jumped at his first offer, but this job was the worst job to take in the CFL. Rule #1 in any job search is: Can you be sucessful, and Rule #2 Will you have control of your destiny.

On both those counts there was no way that was going to happen. I would put forth any Coach for the Riders would have only been a 1 year situation.

Goin forward into 2012 the Rider Head Coaching job is still a garbage job. You've got a GM with a 1 year deal, and that is not a good situation for any Head Coach to be in. The Head Coach is only 34 so even if it doesn't go well, he's still on the front end of his career and can rebuild. Greg Marshall on the other hand he's pretty much defined his career now over the next 15 years of the remainder of his working life.

You know Obama the only thing going on that is what you call Garbage. Is your comments. Of course Taman only has 1 year right now. If they would have given him an extension last year the fans would have revolted. If the Riders are competitive this year then they will extend Tamans contract in a Heart Beat. The difference between Marshall and Chamblin as H.C. is very simple. Chamblin has earned it. Where Marshal felt it was turn. Take your negative dont really have a clue attitude and keep it to yourself. We dont need that here right now. Chamblin will make this team competitive.

Excellent come back 3rd and 1. I agree 100% Why this Obama dude figures he's the CFL Rider insider is beyond me. With the EE and Calgary Stampeder QB situation. I can see the Riders doing very well this coming year. No doubt BC will still have a solid team. The rest of the West is up in the air. This is Taman's 1st year as a real GM and he has a young and exciting head coach. Greg Marshall's comments like: It's not my job to inspire the players or if you can figure out whats going on here then let me know. Or this isnt the same team that went to the Grey Cup were just so unproffessional. I like our odds with Corey 10 times better than with Greg. Marshall wiull never be anything more than a D.C.

3rd and 1: Can you please explain exactly how Chamblin has earned it? A db coach in Clgy for a couple years after a brief Wpg stint then the D coordinator of a lousy Ham D? Greg Marshall is the one who put in his time and earned it. Some people are friggin clueless! You are probably one the people who think Ken Miller should be in the Plaza of Honor too one day

Excellent post Obama as I agree 100%. I am guessing not many people actually wanted the job.

Just because you put in your time dosent mean you deserve it. Greg Marshall has never done anything but put in his time. The players didnt respond to his Im here now and my title is the H.C. Marshall didnt do 1 thing to prove to anybody in the 1st 8 games that he was a head coach. NOTHING!
Corey Chamblin's defence in Hamilton last year took him all the way to the eastern final. If his offence could have score some points instead of 16 2 and outs. Then Hamilton would have been in the Grey Cup. When Greg Marshall was the D.C. they couldnt even stop Cleo Lemon in the Semin final. You want to talk about clueless. It's guys that come on here stating they know what they are talking about and then sign off with Anonymous. Because they dont have the balls or the intelligence to back it up!

You made my point for me. It is a garbage job because had Taman been given an extension the fans would have revolted.

For the past number of years they float the names out there, read this Blog for the reaction, and then see what happens.

Not letting a Professional Head Coach pick his Assistants? That sets it up right there.

Sorry, but hey I've been correct on let's just say more than one occassion. I don't see that changing anytime soon. I personally credit the current guy for taking this Head Coaching job because many College Programs require Head Coaching on a resume. He's basically doing what Lane Kiffin did or any Oakland Raiders Head Coach in the past has done. Take it when you're young, put it on your resume, and people in the know understand what the situation was, and that you did your best.

Now if you're in your 50s and it's your one and only shot.....take a pass. It certainly looks like that was the case this go round too.

It's so unfair that you guys have to debate Obama. He makes you look so dumb, just give it up already.

Where exactly is he not correct in that post?

I don't know if Ken Miller should be in the Plaza, but he had more success than 90% of the coaches who have ever coached for this franchise, so I think he deserves more respect than what he recieves on here.

Oh, no. That's right, Austin's magic in '07 was responsible for getting us to the Grey Cup in 2009 and 2010.

Mark

Anonymous said...

Mark it's not that Miller's coaching was bad in 09 and 10, it's just that his managerial abilities were not very good. That's why we are in the mess we are now. Yeah we got to the cup in 10 but the warning signs of things to come were evident during that losing streak. It wasn't pretty.

The Woz said...

To the anon who says that Richie was not offered an assistant/assistant coach job with anyone....I have news for you...he was under contract with us for 2012 so how could anyone offer him a new job?

To the anon that says that Ken Miller should not be in the Plaza - give your head a shake buddy - Ken is a shoe in given the great success he had here for three seasons. He is a God around here and that will not be diminished by the 2011 showing. He led us to our first and only first place finish in 35 years and took us to two straight Cups plus with the offensive coordinator when we won in 2007. Unbelievable how ungrateful and ignorant some people are. Blaming him for the entire fiasco in 2011 is convenient but unfair. There are many "excuses" for last year and he was just one piece. But letting that blight his entire career here is just not right. Geez.

To Obama - Marshall did pick his own assistants - they did not sign one of them until after he was hired. Who exactly do you think he did not want/did not hire? He had a history with all of the coaches he brought in. I am not sure where that wildass rumour started but it makes no sense.

Not sure why you think Marshall should have passed on our job...it was a good opportunity - we were just coming off the Cup and had a good nucleus of players. But I suppose he had to make the choice between two types or organizations - either go to one that has been a loser and try to rebuild - it you get fired then I guess you just say the task was too hard. Or take a job with a team that has been successful and run the risk of not being able to keep it at the top. Either way Marshall would not look good and likely would not get another chance at his age. But in his mind he said hey I am 55, I am confident in my abilities, I can work in this system and with the talent they have in Sask and I have to crap or get off the pot because I am not getting any younger.

He could not "pass". He tried, he failed. Too bad. Move on. It happens to working people everyday....

Well said Woz. You just have to shake your head at some of the ignorance this fan base has. I love cheering for the Riders. However embarrassment for some of our fanatics is also a reality of being a Rider fan.

Anonymous said...

Another essay by Woz defending the crap of the last two years. Like he famously says, stupid is as stupid does.

Why can't we leave it in the past, learn from those lessons and move on? Chamblin is the coach now and he has a great attitude. Miller who?

Anonymous said...

He should milk every penny the Riders owe him contractually and then when that runs out, take another job.

Anonymous said...

You posters that always complain about other fans posting and call them ignorant should have listened to Edmonton radio after Terry Jones suggested Steve Tambellini be given an extention. Having radical fans is not a Rider exclusive, so get off your high horse and enjoy it.

Wow Woz I thought you actually knew a little bit more about football. Was Chris Jones not under contract?
Even though a coach is under contract they can get out of the contract if they are promoted. D coordintor with an asst head coach attached to it would be classified as a promotion. The fact is no one but the Riders want Ritchie Hall.

3rd and 1 and Woz are reasons why we have only won 3 Grey Cups in 100 years. Too many people around here accept mediocricy instead of demanding excellence.

Isnt it time we forget the Marshall era? For a bazillion reasons it was a shambles, but those principally involved are gone, save for Taman. This showed that Miller was not GM/admin material and was a good coach and motivator.
For all concerned this is in the past thank God!!!

If Marshall gets a job, in Montreal or anywhere else for that matter, do we still have to keep paying him?? Writing THAT cheque every month (not literally but figurtivily for those about to jump down my throat) is what keeps me from forgetting what a debacle last year was. Spread the love for that mess across the board...Marshall, Taman, Hopson. It was a recipe for failure. BUT I like what we are cookin up this year. Go Green!

Woz are you telling me in Marshalls interview he was not told Richie Hall is your D C and if you do not agree the jobs not yours. right from Hopsons mouth
