THIS COULD TAKE AWHILE

Sportsnet's Arash Madani was on 620 CKRM's Sports Cage with us on Tuesday, updating the Roughriders' search for a head coach.  This is how the conversation went down:

MADANI:  This is what I can tell you guys.  (Ticats Defensive Coordinator) Corey Chamblin interviewed on Monday and did well.  There's still a long ways to go.  In addition to (Bomber Defensive Coordinator) Tim Burke and (Lions Defensive Coordinator) Mike Benevides up to interview within the next week, the Riders also have two NCAA guys on their list with some CFL connections.  Neither are named Kent Austin.  So there are two other NCAA guys on the radar for the Riders.  I'm trying to confirm the names.  There's miles to go before we sleep on all these things and in Hamilton, they're still waiting to get to coaching evaluations.  They're in the midst of player evaluations.

PEDERSEN:  At Grey Cup everyone thought Chamblin was a slam dunk.  Why do they think that?

MADANI:  I think it's just because of the process last year.  Chamblin was the finalist to Greg Marshall and now that's up for the position, people think he's the guy.  But I can tell you the Riders are at the preliminary interview stage.  We talked about this last week; if this gets done by mid-December, that would surprise me.  They're going to take their time on this and get it right.

PEDERSEN:  How could the Argos land Scott Milanovich so quickly, and the Riders take so long?

MADANI:  I just don't know what the Argos' structure will be?  Is Jim Barker going to remain the head coach?  Is Bob Nicholson still going to be President?  Is David Braley going to have a hand in football operations?  How much of an influence will the CFL have on football operations?  If this Milanovich deal was signed, we would have heard about it by now but there's nothing.  I spoke with the Argos just before getting on the phone with you guys and there is no announcement pending.  So I'm not sure if he's signed!  Don't forget he turned the job down two years ago because they weren't going to pay him enough so you wonder where that situation sits right now.

Acording to Naylor the Milanovich signing is just a formality and the Argos are now talking to Chris Jones about being an assistant HC and defensive coordinator. I guess Brendan is going to chose from the leftovers.

Funny how a lot of fans wanted Brendan to take his time to get the right guy and now some are upset that he's taking too long. Get a life people.

Here is an interesting name for a potential OC / QB coach, Turner Gill. He is a former CFL player and has coached at various levels in the NCAA. He is also available as he was just let go as HC from the University of Kansas. If you think he is out of the Riders price range, think again. He is still owed $ 6 M over the next 3 years, so any $$ he makes from the Riders would be 'extra'.

Danny Barrett, is another NCAA with CFL ties (hehehe), anyways he worked with Turner Gill. And Houston Nutt is also available who worked with Kent Austin, which kind of making him ties to CFL guy.

Charlie Taffe could be a viable candidate.

Isn't Charlie Taffe older than Ken Miller?

It's starting to look less and less like Chamblin is the shoe in that everyone thinks he is.

Poor Rider fans are just frothing at the mouth for any sort of word from Taman but he's playing his cards real close to the chest. Good for him.

Madani tweeted yesterday about two interviews being set up with guys from NCAA. Jamie Nye speculated that one could be Condell. Seems the only guy in Regina attempting to keep up with the search at all is Nye, while the LP guys and Rod sit back and report things a day later.

Rod Pedersen said...

Um, Jamie is getting his info from Arash, who is paid by us. Just think about that before posting again. Thanks.

Fans need to be patient. There is NO way the Riders can compete with the Lions over the next couple of years. Build the team slowly and start making your move when the Lions start to age.

Also, any truth to the rumors that Fantuz is gone? I heard he was in BC all weekend getting wined and dined by the Lions.

Larry said...

Andy is under contract with the Riders until February.
League rules do not allow teams to wine & dine players under contract with other teams!
Fantuz wants to stay in Saskatchewan.

Anonymous said...

Larry you have that rule in writing? It is offseason for Andy and he could dine with anybody as long there is no contract talk.

CM said...

B-RadCarlsson - gotta disagree with you on the next few years to compete. It was the beginning of 2010 when Hawkins kicked a terrible BC oline all over the field and knocked Printers out. Lulay looked awful. If Sask can add a few good olineman and dlinemen and a MLB, they can be right there next yr. Forgot, we have Taman, and he thinks the oline is good. Maybe you are right after all.

Sure sign Andy long term as his health is very durable, and he's on the upswing of his career. Also the guys in the locker room are just thrilled with him as a Teammate.

Of note: a chance to see John Chick in action on the upcoming Monday Night Football.

Make sure we sign Darian too, and the guys love playing for him and think he's a great leader.

We have no rush end on either side. Will lose Freeman to NFL or another CFL team. Lost Simpson to retirement. Have a super old O Line and no RB. I do think we have pieces to build on but trust me absolutly no way we finish ahead of any West team.

This B Rad Carlson knows what he is talking about.

Clearly you have no faith in Taman and his abilities. I believe he will get the ship turned around this off season and we'll compete again. Our two biggest needs are OL and DE, Taman will address those this off season.

Bellefuille was relieved as HC, so Chamblin or Marshall in Hamilton?

OK, Rod. Why didn’t you put two and two together and toss out the name “Condell” instead of Jamie then? Or is your work done for the day at 6:00 pm?

Actually 7 pm. When's your work day done?

If your a daily listener to the Cage you should remember that Rod and John talked about Condell as an option awhile back when Kent Austin's name first came up. I remember hearing this anyway.

With all due respect I am puzzled by why you get news of the Riders' hunt for an HC from Arash Madani when he's based in the east and you're here . I assume you are more in touch with the Riders than most people outside the organization. Perhaps that's incorrect? As Mark Kelly on CBC says "that's a disconnect".
Just asking.
Keep up the good work and say "Hi" to Carm from Don W.

Rod Pedersen said...

With all due respect, that shows what you know about how things work. Thanks for reading.

Riders48 said...

Umm .. Once again, respectfully, was your response sarcasm? Of course I don't know "how things work". That's why I asked.

Rod Pedersen said...

Not sarcastic at all. Can someone help me out with this? I'm about to go on the air.

Anonymous said...

Riders48, I thought it was a good question. Rod just seems a bit upset by some of the blog posts.

I think the short answer is just "thats not how it works"... But Rod did used to get a lot of the inside information a few years back, and I distincly remember him being upset when people were mad at him about posting something too early, etc.

Thats why I started reading his blog. This thing with "insiders" seems to be relatively new, but I'm just some guy working a desk job, what do I know?

Anonymous said...

Bottom line - if Rod breaks a story he gets his scrotum nailed to the wall. Clear enough for ya?

Anonymous said...

This is a good example of what happens when the media is bought by the Riders. There is no inside info released unless it is micro-managed by Jim and the Bd of Directors. Don't expect anything but happy talk without much critique. Perhaps this attitude is the reason for only 3 Grey Cups in 100 plus years and counting. The only team more futile than the Riders are the Lions but they only entered the league in 54 and have double the Cups the Riders have. The Riders may never win as many Grey Cups as the defunct Rough Riders as long as the old boys club and no media accountability continues. How else can 98 years of losing be explained? On the happy side, the Riders will soon be able to celebrate 100 years of not being the Grey Cup champion. Top that Maple Leafs!

There is no Terry Jones in Regina. The entire sports media toes the party line like Liberal MPs under Pierre Trudeau.

Is that plain enough?

Good point anony. The Regina media is paid to put lipstick on the pig

I always have to laugh when someone trots out the tired old wing-nut theory that the short-comings of the Riders on the field are because of the "media" and that they are "bought" by the Riders.

I guess there is always going to be some snarky, delusional person who truly believes that the success and failure of a pro team rests with the media. Or that if only the team brass would listen to them that all would be well.

I am sure there are these same types in Indy who blame the Colt's bad season in 2011 on the "media".

Does anyone truly believe that its because we don't had sports media personalities who will bash the Riders and the people who work on trying to build a better team for 2012 that the team will fail on the field?

Man, if you do, give your head a shake!

How about Conservative MPs towing the line under Harper. They sure spoke up during the Potash takeover situation.
