CFL FINES RIDERS' CRAIG BUTLER

Toronto, ON (July 13, 2011) - The Canadian Football League (CFL) announced today that it has fined Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive back Craig Butler an undisclosed amount for an illegal hit on Montreal Alouettes receiver S.J. Green in last weekend's game played on July 9, 2011.

The hit was deemed to be illegal because Butler, while making a tackle, lowered his head and led with his helmet, which made primary contact with his opponent's helmet.

"These types of hits are illegal because they are dangerous and pose a serious risk of injury to players," said Kevin McDonald, Vice President of Football Operations for the CFL.

A very marginal infraction at best...it was a football play...considering the crap the officials let Montreal get away with, this should be embarassing to the League...maybe the officiating crew should be fined for unprofessional conduct...no big deal and it's just another black eye for these substandard executives in Head Office.

Out of all the crap and bullsh&* that the Als displayed in the faces of the officials and after-the-play stuff, this makes no sense.

Butler made the hit on Green as Green was falling after making the catch. It was near the Riders goal line (weren't they all!) when it happened, but it just looks like had the hit occured 1/2 second sooner, Green would have got it right between the numbers.

Whay hasn't anyone in the media addressed all the excessive abuse our officials took during the game from the Als? One or two early flags for Objectionable Conduct would have shut them right up!

A little attention to this issue when Bagg's collarbone was broken on an illegal spear in the Riders' last offensive play in the 2009 Grey Cup would've been nice...

It's Montreal so what do you expect all of their pro sports teams bitch and cry like no tomorrow.

Nope, right call. In today's game it's an illegal hit. I for one am glad the league is stepping up and protecting players whether they are All-Stars or rookies!

Go RIDERS!

On another note, TSN is asking the question if Calvillo is the best CFL QB in history? After this season there won't be any debate.

At that time I would put AC at the top of all players list.

Wrong call completely!..the hit was good and the follow through was what connected. He did not lead with his head. Even the broadcast crew called it a good hit. They are not clamping down on this, they are singling out the occassional marginal hit when some whiney team complains. The Riders have been victimized by this bull shit time and time again. Higgins and his lackey's are bafoons.

my storyline doesn't show where the Als filed a complaint.

Right call .... TSN showing play.

I still would say Doug Flutie...then AC.

Not to sound like a homer, even though the refs can pound sand this year but it wasnt more than 2 weeks ago that Nik Lewis lined up as a tight end and punched a guy as he was leaving the line of scrimmage vs edmonton in preseason. TSN commentators laughed and said" haha thats Nik Lewis playing hardnose football" f@ck that; block don't punch you overrated baby from Calgary. I feel for Butler and if somebodys sets up a fund for this fine;count me in.

Everyone's out to get us! It's an eastern conspiracy! Hide the women, children and the wheat!

If I were Butler, I'd get Pittsburgh Steelers Harrison to give a few comments to him for the commish

Butler led the tackle with his head/helmet.. they are not taught to tackle like this for simple reason you could seriously injure someone.

As for bad officiating... it was bad both ways... we got away with a few calls in the first half... they got away with a few calls. Point is, we have to play better all around with the best in the league... Green may have been offside, but it was a 5 yard curl... his desire and missed tackles by the Riders allowed him to score... not the off-side!

Waaa!... we lost to the best team in the league, who has been dominating for well over a decade, after keeping up to them for the first half. We have to be much better all around!!

Absolutely the right call was made. If it happened to a Riders we would be screaming for a fine. I hope the CFL keeps this up even if it means that the Riders get fined 100 times.

lol some of you are idiots.

Right call indeed

Bottom line...marginal call. I have watched it dozens of times. He had committed as Green was going down. It was a reaction bang bang play with his arm in front of him. Much like Chick nailing Henry as he was trying to get up and getting flagged for it. It is BS and no number of "Freds" can change that.

If that hit was worthy of a fine, then there are defensive backs around the league who will be paying to the end of the year "pizza and beer" fund for Higgy and his refs. BRUTAL!!!

A Bombers fan!!!

I thought it was going to be a penalty, or fine, right away. I was surprised that nothing had happened until today. When there was nothing on Tuesday, I assumed that it had been missed and/or overlooked.

From Ian Hamilton, it's the second last paragraph here where the crybabies from Montreal wanted the play reviewed because they thought it was a spear.

What about the hit on Stu Ford in the opening game against Edmonton we he was flying because the Edmonton play lead with his head and made helmet to helmet contact? The CFL needs to be more consistent with these calls and clearly define what an illegal hit is. I guess the only reason the Edmonton player didn't get reviewed and fined is because Stu Ford is a tuff guy and not complainer.

Green, Richardson , and the rest of the Al's better look out this week Huntley and Foley are two pissed off big dudes because of their cheap shot antics. It's kinda funny these assholes can take cheap shots but cry like little bitches when it happens to them.

Boom goes the dynamite, Butler is appealing his $750 find (according to Mark Masters that's how much he was fined).....

The league should watch Nik Lewis one game if they want to see dangewrous and unsportsmanlike hits!!
