LIONS 23 RIDERS 17

VANCOUVER -- The Saskatchewan Roughriders are bringing home a four game losing streak after a 23-17 upset loss to the B.C. Lions on a Hallowe'en Sunday afternoon at Empire Field. The Riders turned the ball over five times to B.C's one, as the Lions remained alive in the playoff hunt heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

The Riders led 3-0 after the first quarter but trailed 13-3 at halftime and 13-10 going to the fourth quarter. The Riders led in these statistical categories; first downs, rushing yards, passing yards, net offense and time of possession but didn't win where it mattered most. Quarterback Darian Durant threw three interceptions and fumbled once, while throwing for 332 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Cary Koch and Chris Getzlaf. Wes Cates had 52 yards rushing for the Riders and in the process went over 1000 yards on the season.

“We had a lot of players who played their fannies off and I’m really proud of a lot of them," said Rider coach Ken Miller on CKRM after the game. "I’m proud of our defense. I don’t know how many rushing yards they had but people would think they would have had more. We just didn’t take care of the ball on offense. It’s hard to muster enough in other areas when you give the ball away. And to give up another punt return touchdown really makes me beside myself.”

Miller's referring to Yonus Davis' second quarter 88-yard punt return touchdown which gave the Lions a lead they would not relinquish.

The Riders fall to 9-8 and host Edmonton Saturday night in the final game of the regular season. The Lions improve to 7-10 and are tied with the Eskimos for the final playoff spot. The Lions visit Hamilton next week and an Edmonton win at Regina will knock B.C. out of the playoffs.

Say what you want about these being meaningless games. I guess someone forget to tell Montreal and Calgary they had meaningless games too.

Since we're talking about next year, yes, I'm writing us off on November 14th, I sure hope the brain trust ditches some coaches starting with Berry.

I just can't imagine a Kent Austin coached offence throw so many USELESS, Marcelle Bellefeuille type of short, out patterns. I'M NOT A COACH, but its fairly obvious that the offence is not built to Darian's or the team's strengths. When Darian pushes the ball UP the field, he has success more often than not. How many times today did he throw that useless 5 yard out pattern. Even on the last drive in the 4th quarter. Those would be as useless as that Cates handoff up the gut for 2 yards.

Late in the 4th quarter, Darian throws UP the field to Fantuz then UP the field to Getzlaf. So many of the other play calls the last half of the season, our receivers are either running back to the QB or toward the sidelines. Whoop a lot of offensive threat that creates.

Berry's offence is conservative. Plain and exciting like prairie pond scum. You could see Darian's frustration at the end of the game and I don't blame him one iota.

Sure we have a home playoff game. Blah blah. Thanks for the constant reminder from the Rider media talking heads. You've been using that as an excuse for a couple of weeks now, so please spare us that excuse this week.

This team is falling fast having lost to 2nd and 3rd string qb's during this losing streak.

This team has so obviously lost its momentum.
Darian has lost his mojo.

I wonder if the coaches have lost the locker room.

See you in 2011 with, hopefully, one or two new coaches with 21st century football intellect.

This team has lost its confidence and lost its way. I don't have any hope for them winning again this season unfortunately. I have usually been upbeat with them, but in the last month they blown that optimism to bits.

We are going to end up 9-10, below .500 because we will lose the next two games.

Wish I was wrong but this team even knows it. They knew last week because one the players pleaded with the fans to not lose faith but it is hard to keep it when they can't even show it themselves.

Well, I was pretty sure a couple of weeks ago that we wouldn't win another game this season. Still a fan, still love this team but that's the sad reality of this season. Don't really feel that they've got what it takes to get 'er done. Too bad because for the most part I think we have the talent.

Let's hope 2011 is a much, much better year.

Berry better not be the first coach to go cause Daly needs to be ahead of him and Miller right behind Berry.
Old men you better call up Tillman and see if he has jobs for you next season. Only two more weeks of these old farts, thank god.

Suck it up again! People, WE ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH! WE ARE A SOON TO BE 9-9. We did not make enough off season changes to improve: D-line, o-line, linebackers(Simpson is the exception, great year). Welcome to the Taman era. Hire Joe.

I agree with W, the coaches have lost the locker room. Wonder if there is a morale problem somewhere, cause this aint the same team we saw in July/August.
Hard to believe they were in the hunt for first place about a month ago.
They are now the worst team in the league.

3 Interceptions, and a fumble by Durant and recovered by B.C.
Durant has turned into a nobody quarterback and is making a disgrace of this football team. Next year he should be gone along with a few of our so called coaches.

Basil's comments ....When things are going bad.... leadership steps forward and is visible to lead the team.... What I have noticed is that as our losses continue Hopson and Taman have disappeared... This is no surprise to me from my knowledge of both individuals. Hopson did not support Tillman, then when he should have picked Womack as our leader, he found out Kenny did not like Joe; so to make Kenny happy Hoppie said to Taman, you can have a job if you report to Kenny.... Taman needed a job because no one else wants him.. so he said yes and the rest is history... I am season ticket holder for a long time, I have followed the CFL since 1954 (Jackie Parker)... I will always support the Riders, I will continue to have season tickets... But I will not attend any games until this organization puts in place the "leadership" required for us to be successful ..... The only way you get a message to Hopson is...quit caring.... it is possible he might catch on ...

Doug Berry didn't throw 3 picks. Doug Berry didn't fumble the ball away. Doug Berry doesn't block on the o-line. The players just weren't good enough.

We're in the playoffs and two wins away from being in the Grey Cup. Things may be bleak right now but show some faith. Yes, the best 'fans' in the world are passionate, knowledgeable and have the right to criticize but they also don't bail on their favourite team with one week remaining and a home playoff game to come.
It's the CFL playoffs, anything can and does happen. Show some Rider Pride and believe in this team until the final gun sounds. Go Riders! I'm still with you.

Rider fans and broadcasters SERIOUSLY OVERESTIMATED Rider talent and coaching this year. The Riders are losing because they can't figure out what is going wrong with the on-field play.

Now that we're being mowed by the the likes of the "Evil Empire" and "Kitty Kats", it's easy to see that the Riders haven't gotten out of first gear. In fact, they may be in reverse.

The bottom line is that EVERY team with a playoff hope is playing like they WANT IT! The Riders are not good enough...that is the problem...stop overthinking it.

Stand pat Taman has let the likes of these players be jettisoned or weren't willing to be here. While the long list of other teams rejects in Riderville is well documented.

The football pedigree has gone downhill with a talent deficit if you want to look at it that way. More out than in. Kind of like balancing your personal finances. Losing more than you're getting and that's what Taman and the braintrust here have done in one painful season.

Perennial winners like Trestmen and Popp seldom sign other CFL team's rejects. Taman rolls out the red carpet for them.

he makes a good point. Last year even with Eddie Davis, Chick n' Baggs we were as a team not as talented as others but we had intangibles and good coaching.

We lost talent this year, got a year older and have a weaker coaching staff. We are probably right where we belong - close to
.500

We are a good team who needs exceptional coaching, major intensity fom the players and key game plays to win the Cup. It can still be done this year but that is a tall order - we are a longshot looking at the facts.

Yes, there's been some questionable coaching calls and not much for adjustments, but clearly the personnel in all phases need improving and this is on Taman.

O-line, D-Line, Special teams blockers and tacklers all need to get bigger, younger, and faster.

Having said that, this is the CFL and you only need to win the games that matter - playoffs. The Riders haven't played a game that really matters in over a month and the results have been predictable.

This team doesn't play to it's full potential until their backs are against the wall, which is quite common in pro sports so don't write off the season yet.

Anonymous said...

can someone please explain to me why we made 4 PLAYER CHANGES on defense and then only had 11 players on the field when BC scored from inside the ten yard line. For christ sake, first we have too many on, now we can't get enough on. Complete shambles and you can't blame that on the players. It's the coach's schemes that have that many players moving in and out. Fortunately, the offense and special teams made bigger mistakes, so it didn't show up as bad today.
I think the Riders got screwed on that on-side kick, but it should have never come down to that play to try to salvage that game.
Is Durant injured worse than anyone knows, because he sure doesn't look like the strong runner that he was through the first half of the season. Or is it Miller and Berry not letting him run?

To my knowledge Miller was never a head coach anywhere worth while till he got this gig. To my knowledge he was never a GM anywhere, so why would we make him VP of Football Operations? Hopson and the Board screwed up on that one. Taman can't make changes cause he doesn't have power to, so other than a glorified scout what good is he?

Miller and his cronies are much like the Shivers/Barrett era. They are loyal to "THEIR" boys no matter what. Noble concept but doesn't win Championships. Much like keeping Nealon Greene and letting Burris get away. Brilliant Move! The on field product is a result of Miller and Miller alone. We should send him packing before it's too late. Install a real GM like perhaps Womack and let him run things. Maybe try and convince an up and comer like Chris Jones to take over as head coach.

Having your GM controlled by your head coach is so dysfunctional it's not funny. I get the sense Hopson and the Board have decided that 9-9 is good enough and have put the people in place to take us there. There will be no fairytale ending to this story. Regardless of what happens next weekend. We haven't beaten Edmonton two in a row for a very long time. Wont happen this year either.

Okay RP,

So tomorrow you are gonna come on here and play the whole "Down Week" thing. Well, now it's been a DOWN MONTH....I am sick of you and and many others playing the whole bandwagon jumping thing and Cates crying to the fans to keep supporting them.

These guys are athletes, plain and simple. They have tough skin and need it in order to do a job. I go to work everyday, put in a hard effort, and may not necessarily like everything about job, but hey, I have to put food on the table so I do it, and do it to the best of my ability.

Tonight's game wasn't about coaching, it was about lack of character. These guys don't care. These guys should kiss the a$$es of the fans that help pay their paychecks, not ask for them to "stay positive and keep supporting them. I work dam hard to earn some extra cash to pay for my season tickets, I expect they do the same in return in order for them to earn their pay.

Miller isn't the problem here, the problem lies within the leadership wearing the uniforms....right now there isn't any.

Here's to Vanstone asking even HARDER questions this time and keeping these guys accountable, because right now, they are the biggest joke in the league.

When the going gets tough the tough get going. You all just bugger off, and for those of us that bleed green we're sticking with these guys right to the end. It's adversity, and it's going to be so sweet when they rally, get it fixed, and kick ass in the playoffs.

I am sticking with the players and management. You all can leave. Stop posting comments, and go find something that will give you the "guarantee" you all want. Was it over for the Red Sox in '04? Was it over for Philly last year down 3 games to 0 in the playoffs? Was it over for the Riders in '89? The point is this is the swings of a season. They have uniforms on their backs so where I come from that means you have hope and a chance.

I hate the Rider Nation. Always have and always will. Get lost all of you!

The Provincial government(s) for over 20 yrs gave this team an operating loan of $2M to keep going. 17 to 23000 came to the games, and they lost money every year. They got going about 4 years ago so stick it with how the fans have always been there.

One last point. Don't you mooks ever compare what you do for a living to the sacrifice these guys make. These guys are week to week, and under scrutiny that would have the majority of you heading for grievances, stress leave notes, EI claims, and medication.

Every single one off you spineless dweebs should be ashamed of yourselves.

Mr Kotter said...

Dear Mr Tillman,

I was present at a Business Dinner in Regina where you spoke, and heard all about the mess the Riders' financial situation was in due to Salary Cap mismanagement from the previous GM, Roy Shivers.

There is no doubt in my mind that you have EVERY Rider Contract up on your whiteboard for you to rob us blind when these fine athletes look to the next years of their career.

As a former athlete years ago, I am envious of the emotion shown by your present coach, Richie Hall, and how much I have seen his players "buy in" to his message this year. I wish we had that here for our team. You know very well how he was overlooked for many years for the Head Coach position, and it looks like it's paying off for your Eskimoes.

By now, most teams (yours included) will know that when they flip up the number by the 1st down markers:
#1 means a 6 yard pass
#2 means a short run up the gut by Cates
#3 means we want to kick the ball away.
(If we reverse #1 and #2, then we'll usually call for a 6 yard pass, when we really need 15)

Easy, heh?

Also, sometimes in a game, we will allow your team to run the punt all the way back for a touchdown, just so we can get our offence back on the field and save our defence from getting tired. You can understand that it is embarassing to see your rookie RB run it down our throats, eating up valuable time of possession.
(we win the time of possession battle, you see, by giving up the long kick returns).

We will try our hardest to make it very loud for your team when you have the ball - please pay no attention to the crowd hollering "H-E-N-R-Y", we're just so used to not having any other competition in the West Division this year.

All the best in the next two games at home here....oh, and Welcome Back!

All is not lost. We may have lost a battle, but the war is far from over. The players were playing with intensity, there was no quit today. There was positive rushing yards, the pass protection was better, for the most part.It appeared to me that some were trying too hard, and if you've ever played a competitive sport, you know that can happen and when it does mistakes occur. This is often caused by losing streaks and the negativity that surrounds them. Ask any coach of any sport. I have confidence that the team will get past it. The Lions were desperate and played a very emotional game. Travis Lulay will be a star in this league. This was not a blowout. No amount of complaining is going to change anything now. Go Riders.

Anonymous said...

Want the answer??

Zero Accountability on this team.

Not for it's coaches.
Not for it's players.

Most common fans who hold their heads in the sand and their hands near their groin when we're winning didn't realize that this team hasn't played a 60 minute game all year. Win OR Lose! We're either down by 10 to start and battle back or score a couple early and hang on for dear life the rest of the way as we go 2 and out.

I see only one thing that's changed here looking at this year's team and comparing it to the Barrett days: the fans. For some reason NO ONE is going after the quarterback. That's odd for Saskatchewan.

Darian Durant has been nothing short of pathetic for a month and a half. And NO, I'm not calling for him to be released, that would be stupid. He's our guy. But, he needs to be coached and held accountable for not playing to the standard of a starting CFL quarterback.

I heard lots of attack on the O-line today. To be honest, I didn't think they played that bad. Most of the sacks came from the Lions bringing full blitz (and not really hiding it) while Durant put the blinders on, ignored it, didn't audible and then failed to use a hot route and tried to hold on to the ball for 4 seconds with a 9 man blitz pkg coming.

Durant couldn't pick up a pre-snap blitz read if they held up signs announcing which players were coming.

HOWEVER....

He played EXACTLY the way his coach asked him to play. At half time, when questioned about what he said to Durant, Miller's response was: "I told him to keep doin' what he's doin'."

That he did, Ken. That he did.

We have several Danny Barrett clones running this team.

And as long as we do, we're screwed.

ZERO accountability, for players or coaches.

I've listened for a couple weeks of people saying it's too late to fire Daley. I'm not sure how you can say we can't win with this coach in one breath, and say it's too late to make a change in another.

What's the worse that could happen? Our teams get worse and we lose?? Got news for you. Psst, we're losing anyway.

As much as I would like to see my beloved riders win another grey cup, this is not the year to do it. I would rather see them win when they deserve to win, not fluke out a couple of wins in the playoff to get to the grey cup and win the big game. If that happens sure we win the grey cup but whats worse is that all of a sudden our coaching staff look like heros. Lead the team to back to back grey cups winning one of them, and now we are stuck with this coaching staff for one more year. That will not help the team in the long run, Miller, Daly and a few others have to move on, they cause two many coaching errors in order for this team to be a contender in the future.

Rally Driver said...

Anon. that doesn't want to win the Grey Cup. Let me get this straight, if we win the Cup this year it will be a bad thing because our coaches are so bad that we win. Perhaps with luck we can find some coaches that will help us lose. I bet Grade 4 was the toughest 5 years of your life.

We all like to blame Taman for the miss fortunes of this team but the blame or the phrase will be given at the end of the year to our Head Coach and VP of Football operations Ken Miller. I believe Ken is a great coach hard worker. If this season ends the way it is going I think it was Coach Miller's either Stubborness and or his respect of the players he has surrounding him. Ken wants these players to succeed and get back to the show to erase last year's disappoint. But having said that Coach Miller might have gave too much faith in the current roster and did not believe that we where in need to fill in some holes that had been issues that others seen at the start of the season, D-Line, Special Teams. Character can go a long way but when other teams such as Montreal, Calgary, Hamilton to name a few continue all season tinkering with their line-ups,and upgrading, that might be Coach Miller's downfall not seeing the inequalities of the Riders. Your team can get old pretty fast if you don't try to continually improve your talent.

Only time will tell and we will see what takes place in the next four weekends. Go Riders!
