Riders Re-Sign Getzlaf & Charles

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today that they have re-signed wide receiver Chris Getzlaf and running back Hugh Charles to new contracts. Both players were set to become free agents on February 15th. Financial details of the signings were not released.

Getzlaf had a standout year with the Riders in 2009 as he finished the season with 41 catches for 531 yards and six touchdowns.

The Regina product is heading into his third season with the Green and White after joining the team in 2007 when he was acquired in a trade from Hamilton.

The 27-year old was selected in the fifth round (33rd overall) by the Tiger-Cats in the 2007 CFL Canadian Draft. Charles dressed in four games for the Riders in 2009.

He finished the season with 35 carries for 136 yards and three touchdowns. The Colorado product also had four catches for 80 yards and one touchdown.

Charles is heading into his third season with the Green and White after being signed as a free agent in September 2008.

How long were the deals?

Also, it seems everyone gets signed to some years plus an option. What benefit is the option? i've never heard of anyone not getting renewed.

Getzlaf and Charles Roddy...might want to change the title.

After what we saw from Charles at the start of last season when he was our featured back, this kid could be good. I would like to see him get a fair chance to win the starting job this year.

Hope this is the first of many announcements to come. Finally some good news....although already "unofficially" known.

Should we expect another announcment next week in regards to Getzlaf re-signing with the Riders? :)

Getzlaf we need to keep, charles....I am not so sure. Maybe a pipe dream but my hopes are that we see Dexter McCluster here soon.....he will make us all say Wes who??

No chance McCluster doesn't end up as a mid round draft pick. Darren Sproles has really opened doors for the smallish waterbug RB's in the NFL.

We already knew about Getzlaf and as for Charles. Getting to be a running back in the CFL is not a three year process. Check Mallett in B.C., Cobb in Hamilton, Whitlock in Edmonton, Reid or Bernard in Winnipeg. I don't really think his 3.8 yard average is going to strike fear in the opposition. It's a waste of time bringing him to camp so essentially we recieved no news today.

I agree Anon. We need a game breaker at RB (a la kenton Keith in 2004). Cates is done. Charles is not it. Hopefully ET has a few gems coming to camp this year.

Yeh, Mike and Anonymous. Signing Charles is a waste of ink.

Who will our next signing be, our short yardage fumble specialist Steven Jyles?

In his farewell speech Tillman said we'd topped out at the 75 players allowable. So what's the big secret. Get with it Riders and give us something inspiring.
