Toronto, ON - (March 31, 2009) - The final results of a comprehensive audit and review process show seven of eight teams were under the Canadian Football League's $4.2 million salary cap for 2008, the league announced today.
"The Salary Management System (SMS) continues to work in the best interests of our game and our fans, providing teams with cost certainty at the same time we provide Canadians with great football," said Commissioner Mark Cohon.
"It is ensuring our league operates on a sustainable business model, and that's in the best long term interests of our league and our players."
The Saskatchewan Roughriders exceeded the salary cap by $87,147 and have been fined $87,147.
Under the provisions of the SMS, set by the league's Board of Governors, teams are fined one dollar for every dollar they exceed the cap up to 100,000 dollars, and two dollars for every dollar they exceed the cap between 100,000 and 300,000 dollars, plus the loss of the team's first round draft pick. Teams are fined three dollars for every dollar they exceed the cap beyond $300,000 and they lose their first two draft selections.
The salary cap for the upcoming 2009 season has been set at $4.2 million per team.
As no team exceeded the cap in 2008 by more than 100,000 dollars, the order in the May 2nd 2009 CFL Canadian Draft is not affected. It remains, for the first round:
Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Toronto Argonauts
Hamilton Tiger-Cats via Winnipeg
British Columbia Lions via Toronto via Edmonton
British Columbia Lions
British Columbia Lions via Saskatchewan
Montreal Alouettes
Calgary Stampeders

No worries. The riders make $87000 on jersey sales in a day or two lol! Good job by ET to keep us from losing a draft pick. Especially considering the ludicrous amount of injuries we had last season. Go riders!
All the haters will blame our decent season on this!
Despite all the injuries, and acquiring replacements to fill in, no wander we went over. Good Job by Eric for keeping it at reasonable amount. The CFL needs to change rules regards injured players counting in the cap.
The rules are outdated as the game has become faster and players are more aggresive and stronger than in the 80's. Extra ticket and souvenir sales will cover the fine easily.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA poor Brian I hope he will be ok.
Indeed, it would have been very catastrophic if we lost our ONLY draft pick...Is the 22nd overall pick really the only one we have?
Maybe it's beckoning Brian from behind the closet door.
Yes, yes, let's poke fun at the guy who does not hide behind the 'anonymous' moniker.
You NEVER see gaymate (let alone playmate) advertisements during the 6:00 sportscast, and what do people think would happen to the local newcast station if they did.
Give your head a shake, this blog is PRIMETIME MEDIA, which can claim the BEST SPORTS BLOG of 2007 title (in Canada). It's pretty much the Western Canada TSN equivalent blog site with the WHL and CFL coverage.
Do you ever see this type off advertisements on TSN?
No.
Point made.
What exactly is a "local newscast station"?
Homophobes can't type very well when they're flustered.
I think they say, "he's got himself all in a tizzy"
I don't think he's a homophobe..I think he's just frightened.
By the way, MH up 3-1 yee haaaaaaa....
